A tall, sta young man stepped forward, whose prominent feature was an thtensely aquiline nose, and tn- formed me in a low and plaintive volee that Mr. Gray Was confined to his house on account of an accident, but that he was prepared to act his absence. “My name,” ne remay) “is Brow ‘The letter was never presented. Ltore tt up the first opportunity, and neither Mr. Gray nor the man by the name of Brown ever knew that it had an existence. Iwas much pleased with iutance. The unafiected cordiality with which Mr. Brown received me, when he learned | was a brother scribe, won ‘me. ‘The first night of our e be took me to a school exhibition and Heights—Hutniston's it was cal —and his whispered comments upon formance amused me greatly portion of the play of “KR Gomez, what bringest der tountain we surpri Brown, in a whispe an old Peru- ‘They knew him ark, a'small bundle of you per- ceive he carries on his shoulder.” ‘Ttiere have been many Peruvian bark jokes since, but that Was thet tresh to tetoo tres, perhaps. Then he attempted to throw his arms Lround me, but owing to the darkness, I sup- pose, he embraced a new plug hat that I wore and when he let go It was crushed into a shape- less mass. He apologized profusely when he discovered what he had done, appeared to give Way to a momentary burst of tears, and then sald that Shakespeare wouldn't have’ stteceeded as a loeal editor, because he hadu’t the neces- sary fancy and Imagination, His humorous account of the school exhibl- tion In the next di aper confirmed me in the impression that the JoUNg man by the name or Brown arare streak of ori- inal humor. The following autumn he pub- shed the first Artemus Ward letter that was extensively copied, an account of the Atlantic cable celebration in Baldwinsville, followed soon after by the Free Lovers of Berlin Heights, and from that time his progress was rapid and brilliant, and within less than two years he took his’ place at the head of American hu- morlsts, Caricature Journa! To say that Pawhk has become’ an English insutut fon is simply to say, in other words, that it is freely grumbied at at umes. But it the grumblers tuin their attention to such ana- “yogues Of the London Charirari as exist in olber countries, it will be hard for them to say Uhat they manage these things better else- where. “Take, fer instance, the comtc papers of France. Not only is there no attempt at like the complete Tepresentation at side of social and political life ph alfects, but the whole status Periodicals 1s different. The ten dency of Caricature in France for many years: has ben ever more apd more to the reduc- fon of labor. Some of “the cartoons of the French comic papers resemble rather that remarkable Bogartlan sketch of t geabt abd his deg entering a tavera than any more explicit and less <ryptographic form delineation. No doubt this often gives point and spirit to the drawing, but it also often serves only to get the artist ont of the difficulty of having really hothing to draw. On the coer: hand, the tradition of ‘h, ably followed ap, though in a different enough’ style. by 3 Mr. Maurier, bas been to tell the ‘story as com: pletely as possibie and to be lavishly generous of accessories. Even Mr. Sambourne’s les3 apparently labored work is Tull of recondite hits and ‘strokes for the mind to interpret, whereas the very first glance tells all that is ever likely to be told by most of the works of the Paris caricaturist. Nor 1s this merely the conclusion of patriotic arrogance. Since Varni and Daumier there has been no ca turist in France who has united fechaical ski! with a wide range and a serious purpose. ‘The recent death of M. De Noe, better known by his punning nom de peane of Cham, has left our bors with hardly one artist of the first rauk eveu in the lighter kinds of what may be called the journalism of thepencil. As forthe other coutitries of Europe, they can stand tle comparison even less. The heaviness of Ger- man Wit has perhaps been made the most of in France and England, but the draughtsmanship aud the jokes of the Kiadderadatsch and its, fellows are certainly calculated to make an Englishman return to Messrs. Tenuiel and Du Maurier and Bur- nand with considerable zest. As for the southern countries, the sustentation of a regularly fed magazine of jests, written 2nd pictured, is not at ail in their way. The satire of the south of Europe, from the provincial sir- rentes downward, has always been personal and spasmodic in character, and has rarely reached the level of systematic humor. It 1s aut pupiven to man to command continual siac- ii jesting, and the excellent person with the! hump has undoubtedly been known to nod. But we repeat, without fear of contradiction, tat the volumes of Punch (2ow many are there?) are not the most despicable of the mon- uments of English pen and pencil work in the 19th century. Perhaps we have never had a draughtsman quite of the heroic height of Ga- yarni in the days when, for almost an entire year, he turned out a full-page Mthograph and its legend ed every day. Butif we have not the individual we have the institution.
