It says: ‘The accident was clearly the result of biun- or criminal carelessness. A P ger on the Garland says: ‘The moon was shiving clear dQ it was almost as light as de aw the Mamie coming long before we e wo steamers came Closer and closer, euiil we began to get uneasy. ‘The Mamie gave one short, Shriil whistle, which was answered a few seconds later by the Garland by a similar signal. Then I heard the bell ring to stop the Gariand’s engine. The Mamle kept straight ahe: id until she appeared to be only 50 or 60 feet when I heard some one on board shoui, ‘Hard a-port,” and then, instead of passing by on our ‘Starboard side, the Mamie suddenly swerved Make cross our bow. There was 2 ng, grinding sound as the bowef ruck the Mamie just back of the Ww heelhouse and rode right over her amidships. In a second the wreck was halt obscured. Her bow was pressed down under the water stern Uited up above the surface. FATBER BLYENBU STATEMENT, In an interview Father Blyendurg states that just, prior to the collision most of the boys were in the cabin. “He was sitting with older mem- bers of the party, and eff the steams! coming tand and the Fortune, another st to him not Very far'apart, and coming very rapldly. “Ido OU know,” he said: *T hardly dare assert {t,and yet It seemed to me —" And the father made a significant pause, as though he thought they were racing. He went on tosay that he did not dream of collision—ia fact had just said to Miss Dussean, who was sitting beside blin, that it was a picturesque and exiillarating 9 slit to see a steamer plow throwzh the water on such a bright moonlight night. Then he saw the Garland loom up larger, and instantly divined with horror that a collision was imu hen. The Mamie whistled, and soon after tt Garland replied, but bore down directly on th fragile yacht, crushing it asifit had been an egg- ste, tatrly cutting it in two amidships, At the moment he saw that a collision was unavoldable he shouted to his friends andthe children to come to the front, and some of them did so. Miss Dussean followed him; and at the same Ume he feluthe boat give way beneath him, and caught hold of a rope on the Garland. Tne young lady did the same. Somebody on board tie steamer pulled her aboard. and he climbed the rope he had hold of, unaided. The four bors who were saved crawled out of the cabi windows of the yacht, and threw themselves into the water. They were picked up by the lifeboat of the Garland, which was immediately lowered, but some who might have been saved were, hé fears, drowned by the swell or run down by the Fortune, which plowed along very soon after. This was not the fault of the For- tune, as they seemed to suppose that the Gar- land people, who hailed them in alarm and anxiety, were cheering them. The father did not know how the accident could have oceurred at all, as it was such a brilliant moonlight bight that the smallest object could be cerned at a great distance. In addition to the names already sent in it has been ascertained that the boy John Grensel was drowned. Search fails to find the wreck of the sunken yacht. No bodies have yet been recovered. An investigation has been ordered by the local board of steamboat inspectors. Texas Humor. {Galveston News. } A DESIRABLE BOARDER, Mrs. Bombazine Black keeps a Galveston hashery.
