ARRIVAL OF THE FAMOUS ALEXANDRIAN ORBLISK. ‘The steamer Dessouk, under command of Lieutenant Commander Henry 8. Gorrit U. S. N., came tnto this harbor late last night. She was first sighted off Fire Island at a quar- ter past seven o'clock and reached quarantine some five hours later. She has brought to New York the now famous obelisk that is to be erected probably in Central Park, and for the Jmmedtate acquisition of which the city ts tn- Gebied to the generosity of Mr. Wm. H. Vander- bilt. It is one of the two needles of Cleopatra that stood for centurteson the shores of the Levant, near the city of Alexandria, and that for centuries pefore guarded the doors of the ‘Yemple of the ee Sun at Heifopoliz. Its nate, which had fallen from its pedestal in Alexandria, was granted to Eoglaad in 1si9, aud only received there tn 1878, through the efforts and personal sicritices or Professor Erasmus Wilson. The present obelisk, so say the Greek and Latin inscriptions on its base, was built by Engineer Pontia, at the order of Barbarus, Prefect of Egypt, fn the eighth year of Augustus Cwsar’s reign. or twenty-two Years before the beginning of the Christian era. It was removed from Heliopolis to Alexandria during the alr of Tiberius, but was erroneous- ly believed to have been removed In the time of Cleopatra, and hence it was called Cleopatra’s Needie. There is iittle in the history of this relic with which the readers of the Herat have not been acquainted. It is by far the most Peerless treasure of the kind that ever came to the New World from the Olid. The remarkable emblems found engraved upon the stones at the base of the monolith have stirred the Ma- sonie fraternity all over the world, and are likely to excite the attention of the Masons of America for many days to come. ‘The program for wnshipping and erecting it here has not been compieted, Dut Masons in all parts of the country have expressed a desire to share in the performance. It 13 said that the unsbipping will be accomplished by the same means employed In placing it on board the Des- rhe steamer will be first Mwered en a k and then the obelisk will be slid upon two iloats, one under either end. The machinery made in Trenton last fall and used at Alexan- dria fogjowering the column will be employed again for its re-erection. It matnly consists ot Wo great. trunnions that are employed for sus- peuding the weight of the needle. THE OPPOSITION TO ITS REMOVAL. Lieutenant Commander Gorringe salled trom ‘ew York on his mission to Egypton August 5, Isi9 The obelisk was formally ceded to himaselt and Lieutenant Schroeder by the go’ hor of Alexandria on October 22, and the work of removal began the same day. During the accomplishment of this task the eltizens of lexandria manifested considerable opposition, and the creditors of the Egypifan government threatened to seize the Needle. Commanacr Gorringe flung the American flag from his treasure on the 20th of October, and on the 41h and 5th days of December, when it was ng lowered, the Russian sailors in that port cane generously forward to his assistance. ‘The Dessouk 1s a vessel of 1,061 tons and ¢x about 2,000 tons. She was built in England and bought by the EgypUan government wh'le yet on the stocks. She was purchased from Egypt for her present use by Commander Gor- Tinge, and she left Alexendria on the 12th of June and Gibraltar on the 25c3. Though several days overdue no anxiety was felt for her safety, as she was reported to be a sttong vessel though any such argument. Major Twining had no doubt a3 to their powers, but it was only a question of economy; the District now derive an income of about tive or six hundred dollars a year from the market abogt enough to pay the interest on the deferred P¥ments the District owes for the square. Mr. Somerville thousat that nothing should be done to conflict with ‘the market people now doing bus‘neis in the sheds on O street, and advocated the P street side of the square. Mr. Temple thought P street, under the cireum- Stances, the most available, although a south front was most desirable. Mr. Curtis was favor- able to the O street side, because it was more Conspicuous, and besides a south front was more sunny. This point was discussed at considera- ble length, it was finally decided, all thiags considered, that the P street front would ausiwer | i | | Of 15 years in each case. as well, in view of the —— of the O street side by the market sheds. It will be remem- bered that a young woman called on Judge Neilson, of the Brooklyn ao out and asked him what course she should take to have the marriage between herself and husband annulled, as he was her own brother and she had be- come his wife through ignorance. It appears that several years since an Irish girl, named Connor, came to this country and formed the acquaintance of Peter Peterson, a Swede. She consented to live with him'as his wite. A child was born in due time, and in order to hide her disgrace the child, a boy wasgiven to her sister, who was married to a brother of Peterson and it was christened Peter Peterson. Some two years after another child was born to the Connor girl. The father disappeared soon after, and the little one, a girl, was called Annie E. Connor. I have found it as an application in Inflammation of the Lungs (Pneumonta), or Pleurisy, one of the very best. It penetrates the tissues or parts rapidly. In case of irregu- larity of the heart’s actions, depending on ner- vous frritation, it acts promptly. After being made acquainted with the combination ot your Liniment and seeing its action in so large num- ber of cases, I do not hesitate to recommend the Samie to both the public and the profession.
