THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. July 20, 1880. ——_ CROSBY 8. NOYES... Edite: ee TUESDAY The Evening Star hasa@ regular, perma- nent, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other dail paper Published in Washington, and equal tothat Of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. ————————————EEEE ‘THE Stan has 8 direct wire from its news room to fhe Western Union Telegraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the lobe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest mews by its own operator from every quarter up to ‘within 3 few moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper sout of Philadelphia which re. ceives exciurively the Associated Press dispatches. Persons leaving town for the sesson, and Sum- mer travelers, can have TH® Stas majled to them, postpaid, for Sfty cents per month, the address being chanxed as often as desired. The money must scecmpsny the order in all cases. Population of Washington 170,000. By the figures given elsewhere in to-day’s paper, the actual population of the national Capital ts shown to be, in round numbers, 170,000, This does not change the relative Position of Washington in the numerical classi- fication of cities,—leaving her still the eleventh ity in the Union in point of population, —but it puts her considerably ahead of all those that are behind her. a ———_—_<+e _>—_. ‘The tenor of ail the news from the Ice-pro- ducing regions of Maine {s to the effect that the Supply of ice now there is either tn or rapidly passing into the hands of speculators. We shall therefore very soon be hearing of an ice @ sharp advance in prices, in all ‘Sof the country. In fact the cry een started In New York, and per- ue or two other places, and the cost to consumers has gone upaccordingly. Thesharks Who prey upon the necessities of the poor in hot Weather, when, ta cases of siexness, etc., they Must have at least a moderate supply of Ice, Cost what it may, will probabiy uccessfal In carrying their point; but there ts really no sub- Stantial reason for the advance. The amount Of ice harvested in Maine last winter was much larger than ever before. On the Kennebec river alone 500,000 tons were secured. which 1s more by 160,000 tons than was ever put up on that stream in any single previous year, and the Increase on Ube Other more finp ant rivers of the state las been nearty In the same propor- ton. ‘These fact: the price of Ply; eto show that an advance in founded on a short sup- but, In spite of this showing, speculators ke the most out of the situation, hold. of the stock and kold g it to force a rise tn price, just as they do with other necessaries of life. Of course, any advance that maay be made In other cities will not be likely to affect consumers here. The Washington Ice prudent, far-seeing business men, their contracts for thelr whole Summer's supply tn the winter or carly in the spring, before the supply {n the middie states is Known to be short, and conseyuently before there has been any advance ou winter rates, Knowing in the beginning that marxetabie ice no longer forms here, and that Malne must be Gepended upon entirely for their €r3 are thus enabled to secure thet! prices are low, andconsequently have no need to increase rates to their customers as the sea- Son advances. In this respect they have a great advantage over the dealers in other places, who Gepend either wholly or partially on a home suppiy, and who, when that fais, are compelled to go into the Maine market late in the season, after the rush has begun, and buy when prices age high. Of course their customers must suffer accordingly, when hot weather comes on; but in their case the result seems to be in conse- quence of circumstances which It !3 not possible to control. The people of Washington have reason to congratulate themselves that they are more favorably situated tn this respect. ‘The arrival of the Bgyptian obelisk in New York to-day will give the people of that city an cpportunity to see how comparatively unimpos- ing an object all this fuss has been made over. As a scenie feature, the “needle” is likely to be very disappointing wien set up in Central Park, and that is about the only view most per- Ons will take of it. ——<—$_<o-______ submarine cable announces, under date ‘h, that “Prince Gunther IL. of Schwarz- burg-Sonderhausen has abdicated because lis sight bas failed. His eldest son, Prince Charies, has assvmed the government of the princi- pality.” Since the Abkoend of Swat parted with the tnsigna of his office and power, a few years ago, (we forget now whether they were taken from him, given up voluntarily, or lost in a jun- gle,) we bave had nothing so startling as this. ‘The last head-lines of New York papers anent Chastine Cox announced that he was buried. ‘Now that the wretch ts underground, the pub- lic has a right toarest on that subject. For some days prior to his execution his movements and sayings were published with as much reg- ularity and monotony as usually attaches to the “Pope’s last illness,” and now the public will, no doubt, gladly let him sleep tn peace, if he can. ——---e-—___. ‘The editor of the Na’ioe having become some. what reconciled with uings and concluded that after all life may be worth llving, the editor of the Springfield Reprdtican feels called upon to fill the vacant position of objector general to the universe at large and political affatrs In par- Ucular. The mantle seems to tlt pretty well, and in that respect no fault can be found, but the change fs a little rough on the human family. It used to have to take the carping homilies in weekly doses, Now tt has to swal- low a potion every dav in the week. ———-_+--—___. The statistics of temperance orators for some years past have asserted that the exe 5 Of alcoholic drinks was alarmingly on the ta- €rease among the women of this country. State- ments of this character have not seemed to be generaily credited, but the fact that $50,000 has Deen raised for the estabilshment of an inebriate asylum at Wilton, Connecticut, for women 1s an ugly proof of an unpleasant state of affairs, to say the least. Among those who have sub- Seribed towards the establishment of this asy- lum are the President, Vice President and many Of our leading public men of both political Parties and of all religious denominations. ‘The supreme court of Massachusetts, In two Tecent decisions, has decided that pathways in Public parks are not highways, which it 1s the Guty of the corporation in which such parks are located to keep in repair, and consequently the Corporation is not responsible for damages for Injuries sustained by any person while tra- Yersing such pathways, —<+e-___ ‘The death rate among children 1n our large Pities 1s frightfully high this summer, as the Mnortality reports from week to week show. Already, this week, one hundred and twenty Children under five yearsof age have died in Baltimore, and tn New York and other large Gites the mortality is even greater in propor- tion to population. Here ts a subject for the Medical profession to study. What causes this Yemarkable mortality among children? Many of maturally prod ‘Witality of each generation would decrease ‘nul the little ones would only come into the World to linger awhile and then pass out of it. Do the statistics of to-day, showing largely in- freased mortality among children, Prove the Correctness of this theory? This ts an interest- ‘Ang question. If our social customs are to im- pose suffering and death upon unborn Hons, then it is time to begin a reform. But it Js quite likely that the thousands of deaths of more effectually than grown persons, What, aco isthe cause ot sven axeaaral mortguty, ” | syag LUMBER! LUMBER! LUMBER! A NEW DEPARTURE.
