Mr. Price and his wife, but at the time only by the latter, the husband being ab:ent from the city. A handful of powder was also placed with the material mentioned, frou: which a tratl of powder extended through th 'd and under the front gate to the sidewalk. At the hour named there was a flash of powder on the sidewalk atthe spot indicated, which communicated Dy means of the train ded to with the powder aud combustible material under the hou: hich produced an explosion as loud as the bs he of anordinary gun. Jos. Mitchell (colo who resides next door, saw the flash and heard the explosion which fol. lowed, and hurried to the spot, when he found the coiton and other material on fire and the house full of smoke. He extingulshed the flames, which were fast gaining headway, and then proceeded to quiet the fears of the family, who were almost frantic with alarm. Captain Gocdman, of the police force, was walking in the direction of the house at the time, and saw the flash of the powder, but was not near enough to arrest the diabolical incendiary. A colored worgan in the neighborhood also wit- nessed the flash. So far no clue has been ob- tained to the scoundrel who thus systematival- ly went to work to set fire toa house ina closely settled neighborhood, with the probabil- ity, if bis plans succeeded, of also causing the death of ene or more of the Inmates.—Wi- mingion (N.C.)
