eee THE EVENING STAR. Was INGTON the Western Union Telegraph office in New York elty, from which wires radiate to all parts of the Blobe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest ews by its own operator from every quarter up to ‘within a few moments of going to press. It is the Only evenin« paper south of Philadelphia which re- Geives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. Persons leaving town for the season, and Sum- mer travelers, can have THE Star mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being chsnzed a8 often as desired. The money Saunt scoomme ny the order in allcases. The Double Sheet Temerews ‘THE STAR Will be issued to-morrow in dou- bie-sbeet or eight page form of Ntty-six col- umns. Advertisers will please send in their orders as early as practicable for the enlarged edition. The number of new advertisements published in June was 1717. The total number Of advertisements published for the io Tse half of 1880 1S 10,7433. Vulization of Sewage and the Pres- ervation of streams, It wil be remembered that King Albert of Saxony, on the occasion of the recent fish ex- Position at Berlin, offered a prize for the “test Method of purifying the waste water of factories and rendering it. iso sewage, harmlesss to Nshes.” To accomplish this effectually would Prove invaluable toa proper disposition of the fewerage of large citles—the sewage of which has proven so detrimental to the waters Into which it is emptied. The Native Guano Com- pany of Aylesbury, Great Britain, ts a competi- tor for this prize, and a correspondeat thus Geseribes the process of attaining the object in View resorted to by that company. “(pon ar- Tival at the factory the foreman in charge con- ducted us through the establishment. Our Starting point was at the end of the large Sewer, into which towed the sewage of a town of some 5 inhabitants, Including all the Geletertous waste water of factories, etc. 2 point where we stood this mass of h emptied into a huge trough which was being fed at the same time from another trough containing a mixture of blood, areeptibly thickened *d mass of filth after 3 Into large walled tanks, fed by a stream of alm water from the factory. ‘This intermixture of alum eauses the sto form a sediment, and so purifies ra The alum not only causes all im- purities to settle at the bottom, but also so weights them that they are there re ed until taken out when periodically the tank is emptied and cleaned. After the water or liqnid has thus flowed through a series of three tanks it ts allowed to pass out Into a flume, which conveys it to the river. The water is so clear that at a distance of upwards of a yard from its surface asilver coin ds readily discernible at the bott2m, and {t wes noticeable that numerous little fishes Were sporting in this Mume—tit betng asserted that they seemed to specially like this water so purified, and evidently thrived well ia it. Quantities of this water, hermetically sealed, Were sent to the fish exhibit in Berlin. “But in addition to purifying the water, this Process also accomplishes a surprising utiliza- tion of the sediment. After being taken from the tanks the deposit 1s subjected to pressure and formed into huge cakes deprived of moist- ure. After being thoroughly dried tn the sun or by artitictal heat these cakes can readily be crumbled to dust, and resemble rich sof, This material is called “native guano,” and ts secured by what at the factory ts called the A B C process, invented or discovered in 1865 by C. Sillar and others, who sold the right of its use to the Aylesbury company. Much has been sald against this process, but {ts results speak for themselves and prove it to be a de- Cided success. All of the articles used in at- taining the result indicated viz: blood, clay, charcoal and alum, are substances iu no way detrimental to fshes, and at the same time they Contain nothing detrimental to the good quall- Ues of an approved fertilizer. This 1s not the case where the less expensive unslacked lime Is used, which not only 15 injurious to fishes, but Would also impair the value of the sediment obtained, as a fertilizer. What is most sur- prising is the total absence of disagreeable odor in the factory, and also the entire odorlessness of the excellent fertilizer gained. In proof of these facts, the Aylesbury Native Guano Com- pany, in addition to exhibiting the water purl- fied, have also on exhibition at Berlin aqua- riums showing how well fish thrive in the porified sewage water, cakes of thelr odorless fert!!izer, and shocks of grain ralsed on fields fertilized with the product of their factory.” —_—$___-o- ____—_ ‘The fast mail pleases everybody but the tele- graph companies. They object te it for the Teason that it reduces the need for telegraphing and because letters sent by It not unfrequently beat the messages sent over the wires. Ss adh!
