THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. — FRIDAY. CROSBY &. NOYES....Edi tor. a Zhe Evening Star hae o regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of ony other daily payer Dudlished in Washington, and equa! to that of all the other daily papers here added to- i ‘Tae Stax has a direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest ews by its own operator from every quarter up to within few moments of going to press. It is the Only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re- Seives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. Persons leavi ing town for the season, and Sum- mer travelers, can have Tue STAR mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being chsnved as often as desired. The money maust accompany the order in all cases. Double Sheet Star To-morrow.” Advertisers and newsdealers are reminded to Send in their orders early for to-morrow’s double sheet Srak. It will be an unusually at- tractive number, In every way, and those who come first will be best served. ‘The leaders have been ¢ nozen, and party lines are now being formed for the political contest for at least the next four years supremacy In this government. The campaign will be an earnest and probably a heated one. Both par- ties have nominated good tickets, which will unite all the factions of each. The tickets are Rot only good, in a party sense, but from a Patriotic point of view, for, whichever may be elected, the country Is assured of an excelent administration. Each ticket will command the full voting strength of its party, and draw little or nothing from the other. The only elements fiom which recruits can be counted upon are the floating v nd the new voters who have fust reached the age which entitles them tothe franchise, and who are yet unde- termined in which cause to enlist. The new voters con. perhaps, at a rough estimate, from five to seven per cent. of the entire voting Population, sufficient to give victory, very probably, to either side, should the canvass {n- duce them to co strongly one way. The chances are, though. that they will divide pretty evenly between the two parties, with the odds in favor ot republicanism. will count for nothing In this can- up of buncombe and clap- e@ little or no effect in de- the resuit. ‘The letters of acceptance Of the two distinguished gentlemen who are to h other in this contest will have ace upon the voters than any of the ign papers, because they will enun- Clate the principles of each and the policy of government that each would adopt and enforce. This may be truly called the people's fight. Machine politics and machine rule have been overthrown in both parties, and the electors are restored to thelr legitimate power. Both the presidential candidates are honest men, who have «its ished themselves as patriots, and either, we ve, will give us a pure, upright and honorabie administration. Therefore 1s the country to be congratulated. = Another notable andYemtnently satisfactory Tesult of the nominations is the elimination of ‘sectional questions from the pending canvass. Both the candidates for President are devoted tothe union, and have attested their loyalty and devotion upon numerous battle fields. Sectionalism, as a feature of our poilties, 13, there ts reason to hope, buried forever, no mat- ter how the election may result. Upon this, too, the people of all sections are to be con- gratulated. It only remains to hope that the best man may win, and the best principles pre- vail, and, furthermore, that the candidate who is elected may recetve a majority so decisive that there will be no room for a contest over the Tesult, such as alarmed and endangered the country in 1 —\_~ere-—___ There isstill a good deal of anxiety mani- fested to ascertain just what Senator Conkling Proposes to do in support of the republican ticket this year. He has sald he would do as much as the administration will do, which ts construed to mean that unless the civil service orders are withdrawn he will not feel called upon to make any effort for Gen. Garfield. Mr. Conkling always appears to feel as if ail the obligations existing are on the part of the Tepublican party towards him, and that he Owes it nothing, and acts accordingly. ‘The republicans complain that the cities of New York and Brooklyn, with their large demo- cratic majorities, control the electoral vote of the Empire state, and this is generally true. But op the other hand Philadelphia, in point of treet, directs the vote of Pennsylvania. The State of New York outside of the city and of Brocriyn {s republican. and never fallsjto give that party a good round majority. The state ot Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia {s usually democratic. It fs asserted on the part of both Parties that fraudulent voting and counting ia the cities often give New York to the demo- crats, and the latter declare that the same means employed in Philadelphia cheats them out of a legitimate majority in Pennsylvania. There is, no doubt, some foundation for the charges on both sides, and there ought to be Some Way of correcting the evil by compelling an honest vote and a fair count fn all three of those great cities. Ifonly a few good men of the two parties would take hold of the matter in earnest, they could pernaps rectify the evils complained of, and thus re nove a possible sub- Ject of controversy over the result of the presi- dential election. Some of the repubiican papers are criticising the clergyman who delivered the opening prayer of the Cincinnati convention because of the “partisan hints” tt contained. If he indulged only in partisan hints then was he mild in com- Parison with the reverend gentleman who prayedat the Chicagoconvention. He delivered @ regular partisan prayer, and apparently pro- ceeded upon the assumption that it was the Special duty of Providence to fight the battles of the republican part: ————+<+e--—___- In a republic there are always grave objec- tons to taking a man from military iffe for the head of affairs even temporarily; but the re- Publicans, having twice chosen tor President a Man who had a military record only, are pre- Cluced from opening their mouths ou this point. —_—__+---_____ Read in cold type some of the ear-tickling figures of speech used by the convention orators in placing in nomination their favorite candi- Gate look awkardlyenough. Thus the Phila- delphia News dissects Mr. Dougherty’s capti- vating sentence commending Gen. Hancock as “the soidier-statesman, whose record is as Stainless as his sword.” Says the News: “We hope the eloquent gentleman did not mean just What he said. A stainless sword ts not what a soldier covets; and the record of a stainless Sword is that of an inefficient, worthless soldier, who has achieved nothing, and deserves noth- Ing.” QPECIAL BARGAINS IN OBGANS.
