THE EVENING STAR. _ DOUBLE SHEET. w INGTON. SATURDAY --++--Jume 19, 1880. “Persons leaving town for the season, and Sum- mer travelers, can have THE Stax mailed to them, Postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address Deing changed as often as desired. The money must accompany the order in all cases. ‘The wort! hlessness 0 of the ordinary so-called life-saving appliances on vessels and the tne™- ciency of an average crew were Illustrated atresh in New York harbor last Thursday evea- ing. One of the Coney Island passenger steam- €rs ran down 4 row boat in which two men and two young women were pleasure riding, not far from Castle Garden. The steamer was stopped, but some time was lost in an effort to get the deck hands together to clear away and lower a boat, but, as is apt to be the case, the crew were unable for some time to loosen the fasten- ings. The tackle falls were said to be jammed and the boat's keels were firmly embedded in the chocks with paint. After about twenty min- utes had elapsed a boat was lowered, and when ‘she did strike the water {t was found that only one of those In her knew how to row! The two men were able to save themselves, but owing to the inexcusabie delay in affording help the two young women were arowned. A correspondent very justly complains, in another column of to-day’s paper, in regard to the manner tn which the law against the firing of pistols, fire crackers, etc. in the streets of the city is constantly violated. It is shameful that not only the comfort but the safety of a whole community should be counted as nothing against the will of a foolish or mischievous few who find enjoyment in that sort of thing, and that the practice is not broken up without protests from the public In the columns of the ‘uewspapers does not speak well for the authori- ties whose duty it Is to suppress it. It would be deemed a great hardship if we had no laws to prevent such abuses, but having laws and not enforcing them 1s still worse. ———~-__. The veteran lawyer Charles O’Conor declares that he ts for Tilden, and says if the democrats brow that gentleman overboard they may as vell go into bankruptcy. Inasmuch as Mr. vu Conor wrote a letter not more than a year ago proclaiming that he had lost all faith in democratic principles his advice is not likely to have much weight with the party now. Up to the writing of that letter the democracy felt the greatest reverence for O’Conor, but since then the party has lost faith in him,and his endorse- ment of Tilden will not help the latter any at Cincinnatt. ——_——_---—_____ ‘The Philadelphia Bulletin is candid enough to say that “Tilden is the one man among the (democratic) candidates for whose nomination devout republicans pray fervently.” The repub licans have made their deside to see Tilden nom- inated at Cincinnati too manifest. Their utter- ances are being used as one of the strongest reasons why he should not be nominated. If the republican organs had abused Tilden instead of defending him against democratic criticism, it would have been assumed that they were afraid of him, and that would have helped him tothe nomination. In politicts it is bad policy to let your opponents know what you want them to do. ‘The republican organs of the stalwart order are now charging the democrats in Congress with having wilfully neglected to pass a law or rule to govern the electoral count. Tuis fact, the organs think, is proof positive that the democrats contemplate counting their candl- date for President in, whether he be elected or not. The whole bottom ts knocked out of this imaginary conspiracy however by the fact that it was the republican members of the House ‘who prevented the adoption of a joint rule to regulate the electoral count. They resorted to fillibustering to beat it. —~--—____. The managers of Judge Field's prestdenttal boom display good jadgment in one particular at least: They believe in advertising. They have pubiished sketches and opinions of the Judge in newspapers of both political Parties, and this sort of advertising must cost a good deal of money. Apropos of Judge Field’s can- didacy, there has been a rumor for several days that Jay Gould was furnishing the money neces- sary to bring the Judge properly before the Cincinnati convention. It was sald that Gould furnished the needful in the Blaine campaign ‘Thus, according to rumor, he fs bent on having a President of his own ether from one party or ‘the other. Elsewhere in to-day’s paper will be found Some extracts from a very Interesting paper on “The East,” read by Martin F. Morris, Esq., of this city, before the Literary Soctety of Wash- ington a few weeks ago. Al the request of nearly all who had the pleasure of hearing it read, Mr. Morris has consented to have it printed in pamphlet form for private circula- ton, and it is tn obedience to a still more gener- al request that some portions are now first given to the public in the columns of Tag Star. +see. It seems they have Anthony Comstocks in France, a3 well as in the United States. A few weeks ago a contributor to one of the Paris papers published a scathing review of a recent novel by M. Gonséourt. He declared the book Was indecent, and backed up his assertions by Copious extracts. The police entered the sanc- tum of the reviewer one fine morning and ar- rested him. The gentleman was taken before the police court and condemned to some months imprisonment and fifty francs fine for pubiish_ ing indecent literature. Meanwhile the author and publisher of the book from which the ob- Jectonable extracts were made are at large, and the demand for the volume 1s Increasing. The value of water-tight compartments in vessels Was most conclusively demonstrated in the late collision of the steamers Queen and Anchoria. But for the fact that these vessels Were built In that style both would undoubtedly have gone to the bottom in a few minutes after striking. As it was, both made their way to New York, 300 miles distant, without much dif- ficulty or delay. ———---—___. ‘The report of the grand jury of the Criminal Court of this District on the “drawback forger- ies,” printed in another column, contains some Pretty sharp criticisms based on the facts Stated, and will be be read with interest. New York city ts represented to be in a very unclean condition, and the papers there are Warning the authorities that unless sanitary measures are quickly enforced the city will be courged with disease and death.
