ANTS. © THE EVENING STAR. | T=" "== cent. nevccrios | WANTS. | RON ENT AND GAD ee 1880. pte ec tn rn ince CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. ee ee eg ae ciroulation EE ‘Tae Star haa a direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York tity, from which wires radiate to all parte of the globe, and is therefore enabied to secure the latest news by its own operator from every qnarter up to ‘within s few moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re- ceives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. of ali the other daily payers here added to- getner. Persons lezying town for the season, and Sum- mer travelers, can have Tae Star mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being chanzed as often as desired. The money dust accompany the order in all cases. Double Sheet To-morrow. To morrow THE Star will be published in le sheet or eight page form, containing firy-six columns. Advertisements and orders or this enlarged and extra widely-circulated ssue should be sent in this eventing, or at the ¢arllest hour practicable to-morrow morning. eray eee The Situation at Cincinnati. Vales the plan shall be changed between now and next Tuesday, the determination of the Ohio democrats 1s to press Senator Thurman for the nomination at Cincinnati. It was ra:nored that he had decided to withdraw, but this ts not true, Mr. John G. Thompson, the Manager of the Thurman boom, left for Cincin- nati last night, happy in the belief that the chances of his favorite are as good as any. He insists that Thurman could beat Garfield at the Gctober election In Ohio, and that that result Would virtually decide the presidentiat election in faver of the democrats. If Mr. Thompson could but convince the delegates to Cincinnatt Of Thurman's ability to beat Garfield tn Ohio, he would have no dificulty in nominating the Senator; but that is what he cannot do. Very few democrats have any faith in the ability of ‘Thurman or any other man who could be named at Cincinnati to defeat the republican nominee in his ow ate. The almost universal opinion expressed by the many delegates who have Passed through Washington during the past Several Gays is that Ohio ought to be abandoned to the reptolicans, and that the Cincinnati con. vention = frame its ticket and piatform With the view of making New York the battle- uere can hardly be any doubt pl will be pursued. If the tatest ur be true, and there ts any he will accept the nomtnation, Will, It Is believed by the most t democrats, put htm at the head of et by acclamation. There are members of the New York delegition—perhaps half of them—who favor Seymour. This faction is headed by State Senator .‘ wobs, one of the most Skillful of the democratic leaders in the Empire State. The bellef that Seymour fs the strongest man that can be nominated, and that he could be elected, pervades the democratic party north, South, east and west. If heshall accept, then a great pressure will be brought to bear upon Hendricks to induce him again to make the race for Vice President. The convention will not, probably, be in ses- sion more than two days. The only contest to be settled is from New York, and the indica- tons are that Tammany will be restored to its Status in the party by the admission of a part Of its delegation. New York cannot be carried for the democrats without the ald of Tam- maby, and this fact will secure the admission of John Kelly and others of his delegation. Two Sets of delegates were chosen in Massachusetts, but the opposing factions in that state have amicably adjusted their differences, and thus terminated that contest. The democratic con- Yeutions Invariably enforce the ualt rule where it Is ordered by states, and there will be nothing Of that nature to contend over. The whole ‘Struggle will be on making the ticket and bulld- ing the platform. —_—_--+e-—__ Judge Field has been severely criticised for having entered the presidential race while on the bench of the Supreme Court. He is accused Of having soiled his judicial ermine by his de- Scent into the unclean arena of politics. Public sentiment is undoubtedly against that Course. and properly so; but it must be remem- bered that Judge Field ts not tne only offender im this respect. Besides, there 1s a good deal of Sentimental humbug in the common idea of the courts being lifted way up into a clean and pure atmosphere, so far above politics that the Judges never feel its tntluenc? or experience Partisan bias. Judges of courts are but human, and generaily they are politicians, too, else they would not have attained seats upon the bench. The late Chief Justice Chase ‘a8 known to be a candidate for President; so justice McLean !n,a certain sense; and Jus- tice Harlan, of the Supreme Bench, has mant- fested considerable interest in the pending campaign. Ee has been interviewed, at least once, and expressed the feelings and opinions of a very decided republican. The U.S. Supreme Court has on more than one occasion rendered opinions that were governed by political feelings and party necessities. Everybody knows this, and furthermore in dectsions of this character the judges holding one set of political opinions have almost Invariably taken one view of the question, while those entertaining opposite opinions held stoutly to the otner side of it. Incourts, as elsewhere, it 1s often a matter of Imajority rather than one of law or abstract justice. $$$ ‘The attorneys who are defending Currie, the ‘Texas assassin, were surprised and disappoint- €dat the appearance of Barrymore and Miss Cummings as witnesses for te state. The plea of self<iefence was first put im for the murderer upon the a-sumption that the companions of the murdered man would not appear to testify ‘Their presence upset this program, however and at the last moment the defence set up the, theory of insanity, and supported It by the expert testimony of a physician whose character is Sald to be anything but first-class. This change of tactics by the defence ought to weigh with great force with the Jury, who will deserve and receive the condemnation of all honest people if they do not return a verdictof guilty. Al the facts show that the murder was unprovok- ed and cowardly to the last degree. ————— ‘There ts criminal carelessness in the sanitary Management of Princeton College. Within a few weeks past five of the studeuts have died of malaria produced by a total disregard of the Plainest requirements of sanitary laws. In tact: it is sald upon good authority, that the very at- mosphere in which the students are taught Sanitary science ts poisoned with malarta; that through defective drainage and plumbing the Polsonous exhalations of a cesspool filter Into ‘the buildings of the college, and thus carry the Seeds of disease and death into the very sleeping apartments of the students. The faculty of the college are not only criminally negligent of the health of those committed to thetr charge, but they display a reckless disregard of the interest and reputation of the college which must tn the 2nd sadly impair tts usefulness. ‘Thistime itis Hanlan’s turn. In the rowing Match between professional oarsmen at Provi- dence, last evening, he was “taken with a Butch,” in the side, or somewhere, stopped pull- ing before he reached the turn-stake, and was nowhere at the close. It 1s likely he was really il, as Courtney may have been some time or Other in his many failures; but to non-' - betting People the effect ts allthe same. What with accidents actual and pretended and sickness Teal and felgned, the public, not being able to tell the difference, will soon cease to take any interest whatever tn these so-called contests. In fact when rowing matches come to be classed among the lost arts few people will be sorry. —_$_<re _ Editors well equipped with waste baskets Benerally have the advantage of poets, but not always. In an unguarded moment the Ken- tucky Editorial Association invited one of the umerous “poetesses” of that state to read a poem on the occasion of its recent annual meet- ing, and when she got its members securely Beated before her she settled accounts with them by firing off a poetical effusion nearly as Jong as Milton’s Paradise Lost. betier next time, DaY GOODS, DEESS at Gan SILES, De, Gages ee EVE- LADIES’ AND MI!
