A Man Butted to Death. HIS ASSAILANT ON TRIAL FOR MANSLAUGHTER. ‘To-day, in the Criminal Court, James Stokes, colored, was Placed on trial for manslaughter ip having killed Charles Kane on the 16th of March, 1579, by butting him. Stokes was indicted for this offence with Mary Kane, alias Campbell, the wife of deceased and alleged paramour of Stokes, and they were tried in July last, Mary being acquitted and Stokes convicted and sen- tenced to six years in the penitentiary. The case went to the General Term. On the night of the homicide Stokes and Mrs. Kane had been to a church {n the northeastern part of the county, and deceased meeting them upbraided Stokes for Keeping company with bis wife, and it is alleged that Kane struck Stokes with a stick, When the latter butt him, tractur- ing his skwi. Yesterday, in addition to the closing exercises of the advanced grammar schools for boys, the closing exercises of the elghth grade, colored Schools, In the Lincoln and J. F. Cook bultdl took place—the former in the morning and the latter tn the afternoon. At the Lincoin Bulld- ing Miss Mattie Shadd wasdn charge and a fine wogram was carried out to the complete satts- = ‘tion and gratification of the parents and friends of the pupils present.
