THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. PRIDAY. oo. June 11, 1880. CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. of all the other daily papers here added to- _wether, ‘Tue STAR has s direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest thews by its own operator from every quarter uf to within s few momenta of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philsdelphia which re. caives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. Persons leaving town for the season, and Sum- mer travelers, can have THE STaR mailed to thom, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being changed as often as desired. The money must accompany the order in all cases. "Double Sheet Star To-morrow. Tne Stan will be issued to-morrow, as usual on Saturdays, in an elght page form of fifty-six columns, containing a larger quantity, a wider variety, and a better quality of reading matter than the ordinary monthly magazines,—and all for the insignificant price of Two CENTS. Advertisers and newsdealers will please send in thelr orders this evening or early to-morrow morning. re —___ The nomination of Gen. Garfleld at Chicago has revived the democratic call upon ex-Gor. ‘Seymour to take the head of the ticket to be nominated at Cincinnatl. This time there is more earnestness and more unaminity in the demand for that gentleman than ever before. The beitef that Mr. Seymour is their strongest man amounts to a conviction with a majority of dem- ocrats. It prevalis among all classes and condi- tions of the party, and the indications now are that he will be nominated atCincinnatt, unless he Shall positively declare, in advance of the con- Yention, tha* he will not have nomination, under any circumstances, whatever. The popular demand now 50 noticeable for Mr. Seymour shows platnly that the democrats regard Garfield as a candidate who will be hard that they are afrafd to run their strong ainst him but must force their strongest —as they regard Gov. Seymour—to take the field, whether he wishes to ornot. Steps are being taken now among party leaders to obtain from him a positive, and what may be termed in a party sense, an offielal, declaration as to his willingness to accept the nomination if tendered to him. Of course a part of the plan is to keep the proceedings secret in the event that Mr. Seymour consents to the use of his mame. It would not be good pa@licy to let it be known prior to the assembling of the conven- tion that he had reconsidered his refusal to ac- cept the nomination. The result of the pro- jected interview with ex-Governor Seymour, if it Is favorable to the views of the party, will be announced to the convention by the man who Plages his name in nomination, who will only say that he “knows the ex-Governor will cept,” or something to that effect. This from present Indications would be suflicient to sweep all the other booms aside and put Seymour at the head of the ticket. ‘i —$<—_ Investigations may not always Investigate, but they are sure to be very expensive. The last feat of the House in this direction was tn ordering a committee to inquire into and report upon the charge that one Finley wrotea certain anonymous letter to Representative Springer, Pretending to offer him money for his influence in behalf of Washburne in the Washburne- Donnelly contested election c: Finley had achieved some notoriety in the past a3 a so- called agent of Tilden, but he was, and is yet, perhaps, entirely unknown to the large body of American citizens who have to pay the expense Of investigations, Outside of the House of Rep- resentatives nobody cared whether Finley wrote ube letter or not, and Inside that body perhaps not half a dozen members gave the subd- ject five minutes consideration. Finley, how- ever, must not be included among the indiffer- ent ones, He, together with Donnelly, in- sisted that their reputations had been smirched by Springer’s charge, and that it must he investigated. The House, just because the members cared nothing about the matter and took no interest in it, yielded to the demand of ‘this pair of worthles, and ordered the investi- gation. The inquiry has been concluded, and, So far as the anonymous letter is concerned, nothing more is known now than on the day it Was made public. But one thing fs settled, and that is the motive of Finley and Donnelly fo insisting so strenuously ypon an investigation Both of them have made it a paying investment Finley bas presented a bill of $50 “for services rendered tothe committee” and Donnelly de mands that a sum nearly as large be paid to him. Finley has charged the government $25 a day for his services,as he 's pleased to call them,—a sum doubtless elght or ten times as large as he could earn in any legitimate pursult, and Donnelly’s claim 1s equally extravagant and absurd. The democrats will tind before the close of the Pending presidential canvass that the investiga lions they have ordered and paid for will cut a prominent figure in the arraignment of their party, and if they pay such absurd and out- Fageous bills as these of Finley and Donnelly that one act will a‘ford to the republicans a cil- max to the investigation tssue which they will hardly fail to use with effect. ——$<e-—_ The need of competing telegraph lines and the wide margin existing for a large reduction in the cost of telegraphing tn the United States are very clearly shown by the figures contained in the report of the Western Union Company for the quarter ending with the 3th of the present month. This quarter closes the fiscal year, which es 'S an Increase of over $1,690,000 gross, and ¢ “0 net, earnings over the previous year. The het profits of the year will, it ts estimated, be about $5,200,000, or 114; per cent. On the capital stock, after deducting axed charges for interest and the sinking fund. Out Of this, S percent. in cash dividends wil! have been pald to the stockholders, and 31,543,000 invested in new property and held as asur- plus fund. To understand the true in- Wardness of these figures, the public must bear in mind the fact that the capital stock of the company in question has been * “watered,” or doubled up without any actual corresponding Outlay of money, about seven times the par value Of the original shares. A net profit of 11%; Per cent on the amount of the present stock 13 therefore equivalent to a yearly dividend of about 75 per cent on the original investment. In view of these facts, ts it any wonder that there is on the one hand aconstant ery for com- peting lines, and on the other an increasing demand that government shall take Possession Of all the telegraph wires in the country and Operate them for the benefit of the whole peo- ple? The above figures show that tn its hands they could be made tosolve the Problem of cheap telegraphy in the United States and still yield a handsome revenue to the public treasury. ———_~-o-____ ‘The courts everywhere are crushing with the mighty power of thetr decisions all attempts at Fepudiation, The supreme court of Louisiana has recently rendered a decision affirming the legality of nearly $10,000,000 of bonds which the city of New Orleans proposed to cancel by re- Pudiation. The bonds were Issued by authority of the state legislature, and the city was bound to levy a five-mills tax to pay the interest on them. The new state constitution Provides ‘that no municipal tax shall exceed ten mills, a levy just sufficient to meet the expenses of the New Orleans city government, excluding this interest account. The municipal government thereupon concluded that this gave them a good excuse to reudplate the bonds in question, but the supreme court very properly brought the city up with a short turn. —EE Senator Hampton's influence seems to be still all powerful in the politics of South Carolina. Gen. Gary, it will be remembered, started out ‘seme Months ago in a canvass for the nomina- ten to the governorship of that state. His only platform was Opposition to Hampton's = fight up. Senator PERSONAL MAGNETISM. Discovery of a Scientific Cause for This Wonderful Human Force. Why Bome People are Marvelousty Mag- netic and Others Not at Alt. How Magnetism Can be Acquired and Controlled by Those Who Do Not Possess It. A Few Forcible Facts, ‘There is present in every person a certain power, which, for want of a better name, has been called Personal Magnetiam. In some it can hardly be per- ceived, while in others it isso powerful as to attract the attention of all. Many attempts have been made to account for it, but with only partial suc- cose. It iscertainly not the result of the wili power nor of any special mental forces, because many persons who have little will and less mind are per- sonally very magnetic. In chemical electricity the current is generated by the union of the solids in the battery with the liquids, thronch dissolution. In the human battery it is reatonable to suppose maxnetic force comes from some powerful union of the chemical elements which takes place in the sys- tem. This union must of necessity be carried ovin the kidneys, and hence it marks them as the seat of maxuctic power in the body. These members gen- erdte the liquid eiementa within, and from this generation comes s mysterious force which cannot be understood nor exjlained and can only be felt. ‘This power varies in individuals just in proportion as the organs which produce it are powerful or weak. Destroy the kidneys and you destroy the personal magnetism which they cause. Restore the Kidneys and you bring back the power whic they alone can produce. This is a new truth, but one which the experience of every careful observer will confirm. Itshows the great necessity of keeping the kidneys in a healthy condition, for not only the Jovs of health, the certainty of a terrible death, but one of the great powers of life are dependent upon them. So mysterious have their operations been in the past that scientists supposed they were beyond their power, and Bright's disease has been consid- ered as fatal as consumption. It has been proven beyond a doubt, however, that the pure West India leaf extract, known as Warner's Safe Kidney and Liver Cure, will relieve, restore and reculate thece organs in every case. Its value to humanity can thus readily be seen. If perfect health, long life and Personal Magnetism are desired, the kidneys must be Kept in perfect order, and there is only one certain way by which this can be done, which is by employing the valuable remedy above named and keeping it constantly on hand. As druggists in every part of the land eell it, the difficulty is slight, while the end is most desirable. jell prre LIME JUICE, RASPBERRY SYRUP, STRAWBERRY SYRUP, LEMON 8¥RUP, BLACKBERRY BRANDY, WILD CHERRY JUICE.
