THE EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. Srtoetie ey Alt SATURDAY...... Sree June 5, 1880. CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. ‘Tee Stan has s direct wire from ‘ts news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest ews by its own operator from every quarter up to within a few momenta of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re- Cetves exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. Persons leaving town for the season, and Sum- mer travelers, can have THE Star mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being chanved as often as desired. The money must accompany the order in all cases. A Second Edition Of THE Stak will be issued at 6 o'clock this evening, containing all the news up to that hour. —— Strohbach, of Alabama, The levelest headed man who has yet come to the front {nm the Chicago convention is Stroh- bach, of Alabama. His speech is reported as follow: are Ured of this great bugaboo, “the German vote,” Take it away! We are not Germans; we are American citizens.” ‘This 1s at once patriotism and common sense, and well expressed. There 1s nothing more fool- ish than the talk heard on every side about the “German vote” and the “Irish vote,” and there can be nothing more mischievous than the efforts constantly beg made to keep the vote and there can be no Interest in this country which does not concern native born and naturalized citizens precisely alike. The acci- dent of birthplace cannot possibly make any difference in this respect. There can therefore never be any good reason why the latter should not differ in opinion among themselves, and Vote different tickets, just as the former do. In- deed, the fact that they do not do so may be, and often ts, quoted with force as an argu. ment that they are not yet fitted for the privi- “Yeges they enjoy and the obligations they as. ‘sume on making this country their home. The efforts constantly made to keep Irish and Ger- man voters fn political classes by themselves and to vote them all one way are nothing but ‘the cold-blooded machinations of unprincipled demagogues and ambitious office seekers. In- stead of being a benefit to them, the effect is a serious damage to the victims, individually and collectively, as it ts also to the best interests of ‘the country. It means blind and dumb obedl- ence to the command of selfish self-appointed “eaders. It is in short so many votes for so much »Miee; and the leaders so-called might as well say to their followers in so many words, “You furnish the former and I will enjoy the latter.” That ts all there 1s of it. Strohbach ts right. Let us have no more Ger- man nor Irish nor yet Colored voters. Let us have only American citizens. ———~<2-—___ ‘The opposition in England to the Marquis of Ripon, the newly-appointed governor general of India, ts based mainly upon his religious belief. Several years ago he joined the Roman Catholic church, and, tn obedience to the tenets Of that body, he resigned a high and important Masonic trust. The Protestant liberals are cen- suring Mr. Gladstone for having appointed a Roman Catholic to the governorship of India. ‘They are afraid that the Marquis will use the power of his position to advance the Catholic religion there. However, as his wife remains @ devoted Protestant, she will probably be able to offset any efforts of the Marquis In behalf of Rome. Or she may have influence enough to prevent her husband from interfering in religious matters at all. —————~-—_____ Backed by Mr. Gladstone and the new English ministry, it is quite probable that the King of Greece will obtain from Turkey the concession of the territory which he demands. The Porte insists that the territorial demands of Greece are extortionate, but the Hellenes, in reply, de- clare that a strip of Epirus Is necessary to the agricultural and commercial development of Greece; also, that the town of Janina, which Greece demands, ts, In interests and sympathy, Part of Greece, and that it ought to be made so territorially. ‘The news comes from West Point that “Wait- taker Is likely to be low in philosophy” at the coming class examination. Shoulda’t wonder. ‘His experiences for some time past would run almost anybody's stock of philosophy pretty low. as Edison’s last patent ts on a magnetic ore sep- arator. These side shows, with an occasional foray into patent medicine fields, are all very Well, doubtless, from an Edisonfan point of slew; but what the public ts most interested in 48 the main exhibition. Let us hear something about the electric light. The gas companies are getting saucy again. ——— The hotel crusade against persons entertain- ing the Jewish faith has broken out afresh and In a new place. The proprietors of two of the lead- ing summer hotels on Staten Island, which have heretofore been largely patronized by people of that class, have tnformed thate of that faith that ti) presence al tronag ATE DOWD e wang presence and patronage ———<+e-—__ ‘There ts no diminution in the number of im- migrants arriving from Europe. Three steamers brought to New York, Saturday, 2.034 passen- gers who propose to make their future homes In the United States. Four other vessels, due yesterday and today, have on board 3,0) Im- migrants.
