To-day, in the Court in General Term—Judges Cartter, Wylie and MacArthur—the hearing in the case of Babe Bedford, Edward Queenan and Sandy Pinn, under sentence of death for the murder of George Philip Hirth in January last was resumed. Johnson under objection. The Three Confidence Men. TWO LOCKED UP AND ONE RELEASED. In the Police Court this morning two of the three confidence men—Charles Benzer an Samuel Goldman—of whom mention was made in yesterday’s STAR were arraigned on the charge of obtaining $110 from Mrs. Teresa Solomons by false pretences. Most of the offences against this trio of contd -ne> men, having occurred some time ago are barred by the statute of limitations, the only one not berred by that statute being the case of Mis. Solemons, a dealer in second-hani furniture in South Washington, who says sie wi swindled by him on the 15th day of May, 15/7. ‘They pleaded not guilty. Mrs. Solomons’ tes! fed és ty the particulars of the swindling opera- on, and recognized the two defendants as two of the men who swindled her. Mrs. Sophia Cruger testified that about four weeks ago tls man with another came to her house and represented that he was agent for the Ger- mania Life Insurance Company, and as there Was due her a sum for insurance on her late husband's life, they could get it for her. She was soon apprised that they were swiadlers, and after the policy certificate, so that they could get the money. There not being sufficient proof as to vagrancy, the court disiaissed the case and Bishop was released. District Government Affairs. The Commissioners have Issued an order closing the offices of the District of Columbia to-morrow, Decoration day. VITAL STATISTICS. The total mortality in the District for the month of April was 325 (a decrease of 9 as com- pared with corresponding: month of last year. and @ more than the average number of deaths for the month of April for the past six years) or at the rate of 22.94 per 1,000 per aanum. The mortality of the white population was 160, or at the rate Of 16.54 per 1,000 per annum, while tof the colored was 165, or at the rate of 6. ‘There were 390 births reported. Of thes were white males, 6 white females, 91 colored males, ‘9 colored females, (a birthrate of 14.74 per 1,000 per annum for the white popula- tion and #643 for the colored.
