SSS ee THE EVENING STAR. en DEaESEN GTON. FRIDAY... May 2S, 1880. ‘Tae Stan has a direct wire from its nows room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest news by its own operator from every quarter up to within a few moments of going to press. It is the Only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re- Ceives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches- and Sum- mer travelers, can have THE Stan mailed to them, postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being chanwed as often as desired. The money must accompany the order in all cases. The Double Sheet To-morrow. ‘THE Star will be published as usual to-mor- row in eight page form of fifty-six columns. Advertisers and newsdealers will please send in their orders as early as practicable for this enlarged and extra edition. The bumber of new advertisements printed jist Saturday was 120. The number thus far Printed in May Is 1,923. The grounds upon whieh this liberal adver- sing rests will be found in the statement in regard to the circulation of Tae Sra, standing at the Lead of this column, and which, we may add, claims considerably less rather than more than the facts in the case would warrant. We believe the truth to be that Tue Srak ton in the City of Washington 1s more than three times as large 03 that of any other dally Faper. —--re-__ The indications are, now, that the great bat- Ue for the nomination of a presidential candl- Gate at Chicago will bg fought in effecting the temporary organization of the convention. The Grant men have the sub-committee of the tational committee, which has charge of the convention ball, and one part of their duty is to issue tickets of admission. This is no small advantage, and in the hands of skillful polltic- Jans it can be made to count for all it ts worth. ‘The anti-Grant men are counting upon making 2 “ten-strike™ in the formation of the commit- tee on credentials. Each state delegation will uuame one of {ts number to act upon this com- tuittee, and, it is confidently claimed, that a Majority of the delegations are opposed to Grant. If this claim proves to be correct, then the plan of the Grant men, who say, with appa- ent good reason, that they will have a major- ‘ity Of the convention, will be to vote down the Jority report of the committee on credentials ud adopt the minority report, which, in the event Of this sort of tight being made, will un- doubtedly be in their favor. This is one of the preliminary contests that is very probable. An- other may take place—and {t will naturally Precede that over the committee on credentials —in the selection of a temporary chairman. The Blaine = maintain that they have a ma- jority of the national committee, who will have the selection of atemporary chairman. There 45 some reason to doubt the correctness of this claim. It was said at the time Senator Came- rou was chosen chairman of the national com- milttee that the Grant fssue was made a dis- Unetive one In the contest. Cameron was an Open and pronounced Grant man. Still the Blaine members asserted that some of their fol- dowers voted for Cameron because of his fitness for the position. Senator Cameron, being an astute politician, appreciates the importance of & temporary chairman friendly to his candidate, and willno doubt secure the election of a Grant man If possible. The Blaine men are full of Qight, and will contest every inch of ground. At present it looks as if they will be left alone ia their battle against the third-term question. The other candidates for the nomination are apparently afraid to antagonize the Grant ele- ment by opposing it, and the effect will be to Lelp Grant The pe mal friends of Secretary Sherman represent that he is “hopeful, not to say con- fident,” of the nomination at Chicago, and he is not a man whose politcal judgment fs usualiy blinded by his desires. The contest for the nomination will be between Grant and Blaine in the opening ballots, and should neither of them win then nothing is more Mkely than that Sherman will get it. None of the pro- nounced Blaine men will vote for Grant, nor will any of the out and out Grant delegates Support the Senator from Maine. The fight Letween the friends of these two leading can Gidates has grown too bitter for any truce o> Compromise to be patched up between them. Next to the nomination of thetr favorite, the Grant men cherish the idea of killing off Blaine, and the Blaine men are not less vindictive towards the ex-President. But neither faction Seems to have ground for any unfriendly feel- ing towards Secretary Sherman. He has not antagonized any other candidate, and in the event that neither Grant nor Blaine has votes enough to get the nomination Sherman 1s as to be the next choice of their friends as ther man. A great deal of complaint ts being made of the manner in which census supervisors through- out the country are using thelr positions. It ts charged that many of them regard the offices as. Political positions, given to tuem for partisan uses, and that they are making thls use of them. All this trouble, which will have the effect of destroying public contidence in the census, has grown out of the uncatied for inter- ference with Gen. Walker's original plans for having the work done. He made out a list of excellent non-partisan nominations for super S0rs, but the list did not contain the names of enough republican political work to please the leaders of that party. The republicans then attempted to seize upon the entire list of super- visors, Whereupon the democratic Senate set up Xs prerogative to reject such nominations as it Pleased in the interest of that party, and the re- sult ts a lot of partisan supervisors from both political organizations. ‘The bold stand taken by Senator Garland and several otber leading men of Arkansas agatnst the pending proposition to repudiate a portion Of the state debt ts producing good fruit. Ad- Vices received from different parts of the state are to the effect that the large numbers of Voters who were at first Inclined to lighten their burden of @&ation by repudiation have come to see the matter in its true light, and will yote against the proposition. The best-informed men of the state now say the repudiating con- stitutional amendment will be rejected by a large majority. This ts gratifying intelligence. Repudiation in any state affixes a stigma not only upon It, but, to a greater or less extent, in the estimation of foreign nations, upon the en- Ure Union, It Is asubject for general congratu- lation, therefore, that the sentiment in favor of Tepudiation has been strangled in Arkansas, where it had a strong hold. 2 Tilden got a black eye in Missouri. The organizaiion of the convention Was, however, anti-Tilden; the delegation to the Cincinnat! convention does not coptain, at the outside, more than nine friends of his out of ‘tuirty, and a resolution to instruct for him was Billed in the committe on resolutions by an al- most unanimous vote. ‘The National Republican League of Pitlade!- Phia, apparently, has an exalted epinion of its influence upon the politics of the country. It adopted an antl-Grant resolution which It osten- tatiously sent out to the press of the country with the explanatory line: “We have just adopted the following.” The resolution de- claresthat under no circumstances will the iaembers of the club vote for Grant.
