Harper, while standing on the cor- ner of West and Washington streets, discovered a black man enter the residence of Mr. Robert Frey, cashier of the Farmers’ and Meciautes’ Bank. They stationed themselves so as to dis- tinetly watch his operations and secure him when he came out. Atter, he had been in the house several minutes, Oflicer Harper rang tne door bell so as to awaken the Inmates, when the negro hastily left by a rear window, and running down a private alley secreted himself in the wood-shed behind some rubbish, as he could not scale the fence without being seen. The officers followed close upon him and soon collared him where he had hidden him- self and took him to the station-house. Hie had not had time to go through the house when the ringing of the door bell interrupted him. On his person was found a piece of a can- dle, some matches; and a slat knife. He proves to be an ola penitentiary bird, having recently been discharged from the Albany penitentiary. He gives his name as George Straight, which 1s an alias. Hes from Norfolk, but has been in this District since the war, with the exception of the time he has been In’prison. ‘The offlvers could easily have prevented his entrance to the house, but ae a ht it best to have positive eas against him.
