THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. FUESDAY 5 -.Miay 23, 1880. CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editer. than doubie that of any other daily paper Dublished in Washington, and equal totha of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. “ ‘TE Stax is connected with the wires of the Na- onal Telephone Exchange and with the Western Union Telephone Exchange. Both these sencies can therefore be svailed of in sendiny to THE StaB advertisements, orders for the paper to be served, news, or any information, at any hour of the day free of charge. These facilities are a zreat conve- nience, and will be sppreciated by the customerscof Tae Stan. “Persons leaving town for the season mer travelers, can have Tue Stan mailed to them, Postpaid, for fifty cents per month, the address being chanved as often as desired. The money must accompany the order in all cases. The anti-Tilden democrats throughout the country are just now quietly engaged In an ef fort to concentrate upon some candidate, In order that they maya present a solid front against the old man of Gramercy Park at Cin cinnati. The probability of Tilden, with a weil- Organized minority at his back, beating a ma- jority in the convention who are divk ded among several candidates, stares his opponents in the ‘1ace. The antl-Tild delegates from Pennsylvania to Cincinnati convention are tween Field and Bayard. Hancock has been abandoned. in view of the very probable nomi- nation at Chicago. The opponents to Tilden tn the Pennsy!vania delegation, however, will not be divided at Cincinnati Should Bayard prove Stronger than Field, as shown by a preltminary canvass at Cincinnati, then he will probably be taken; and on the other hand, should he be the Weaker, he must yield to Field. unite the anti-Tilden elements is t yet taken that seriously th throw of the Great Defrauded in the house of his friends. Heretofore he has reaped all the advantages that organization and system give over disorganization, but now that his oppo- nents have begun to bring their forces up in line they stand a chance of defeating him. The House committee on public buildings and grounds havimg been severely criticised for its €mpt to pass a sort of omuious bill provid- ing for the construction of government build- ings throuchout the country, have made public a statement showing the aggregate amount pald by the government tn rent per annu the states and territories the sum paid #or the use of buildings for courts, post ofices, ete., 1S about $1,500,000, which at 4 per cent Is equivalent to the interest upon $37,500,000. Mr. Blatkle has no right to withhold any information on the subject for any such reason. His connection with the projected Hanlan- Courtsey contest was about all that led a good maby people to suppose there would be any- thing fair and square about ft, and he cannot even now afford to abuse that confidence. He Owes it to himself as well as to the pubdlle to tell all he knows. oe —___ As THE Srak predicted, the plan to adjourn Congress on the 31st Inst. has been abandoned as impracticable. The Senate has amended the resolution by substituting June 19th as the date of adjournment, and the House, when {t comes *@ consider the matter, will, very probably, extend the time to June 15th. Sober second- thought convinced the statesmen who were urging an early adjournment, regardless of everythirg else, that they were lable to be held responsible by their constituents for the neglect of public business which their plan in. volved. Every day since the adoption of the adjourpment resolution by the House, impor- tant measures have been presented in both branches of Congress, with the view of procur- ing action upon them, and there are many more of the same character which have not yet had al opportunity to be reported. There is plenty of really important business to occupy the at- tention of Congress for a good many days yet and the sentiment of the country, called into expression by the adjournment proposition, ts that the members should remain here and at- tend to It. — Cox and Balbo, the New York murderers, who were to have been hung next Friday, have been respited by Gov. Cornell,—the former to the 16th of July, and the latter to the 6th of Au- gust next. There seems to be good grounds for the Governor's action in the case of Balbo, about the justice of whose sentence there may be some doubt, but there are no extenuating Circumstances in that of Cox. He 1s a premedt- tated, brutal, Dlood-thirsty murderer. of whom the community ought to have been rid long ago.
