The Double Sheet To-morrow. ‘Tue Stak will be published as usual to-mor- Tow in eight page form of fifty-six columns. Advertisers and newsdealers will please send in their orders as early as practicable for this enlarged and extra edition. The number of hew advertisements printed last Saturday was 13%. The number thus far printed in May is 1,427. ———--+e- ____ The State Conventions. Though the Hlinots republican convention adjourned over from a late hour iast night until this morning, the contest was actually settled Yesterday in favor of Gen. Grant. The direct test Was made upon a resolution declaring “that Gen. U. S. Grant, of Illinois, 1s the chotce of this convention for President of the United States.” After a short but sharp fight this was adopted by a vote of 256 to showing a majority of 79 forGrant. This is by no means the sweeping Victory which the Grant managers had counted upon up to within a few days of the meeting of the convention, but under the usages of politi- €al parties it 1s, probably, sufictent to require the casting of the vote of the state for Grant at the Chicago convention. Wi iy probabiy, be- cause the Blaine men of Illinois, like those in New York and Pennsylvania, are manifesting a strong disposition to insist, In spite of convea- tion tnstructions, upon their right to represen- tation in the delegation from those congres- sional districts which they carried in the recent primary elections. ‘The republican convention of Nebraska se- lected a solid Blaine delegation and instructed for the Maine Senator. The Blaine majority in te pursued precisely the same tactics that the Grant majority employed tn the Ilt- nois conventle They retused to allow the Grant men any representation in the delegation to Chicago, and this faet will no doubt be used by bis friends in illinois to quiet the dissatis- faction existing at the course pursued by the majority io the Springtield convention. The two delegates chosen to represent Dakota in the Chicago convention are for Blaine. The Alabama republican convention has been organized and ts under the control of the Grant men, who will, no doubt, select a delegation Solid in favor of thelr candidate. The democratic conventions in New Jersey and Minnesota send uninstructed delezations to Cincinnati, thouch in the former state Senator Randolph is known to be the favorite of a majority of the delegates. ‘The republican conventions of this week have. we may add, very materially added to Gen. Grant's strength, and appearances now indicate that he will be nominated, in spite of all that has been or may be sald or thought to the con- trary. a $100 °“bortaRe®” $100 A FORREIT OF ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS will be paid by the proprietors of the “FAMOUS,” No. 400 7th st. n.w., cormer D, « If ONE instancs can be shown in which their ONE PRICE (marked in plain figures on each garment) has been, or may hereafter be, deviated from. By a party vote, the democrats voting in favor of the motion, the Senate yesterday laid aside the Kellogg case tn order to take up Mr. Bayard’s bill to regulate tne appointment of U.S. deputy marshals for election purposes. ‘This, very likely, disposes of the Kellogg case for this session of Congress, notwithstanding the fact that a number of democratic Senators declared they would not vote for the motion unless it was understood that Its effect was but temporary. No doubt the Senators who pro- milsed to vote to take up the Kellogg case again, afterthe Bayard bill shall have been disposed Of, did so in good faith and with honest inten tons, but if the adjournment fever continues to Tage the rush and hurry will be apt to crowd the case over until next sesston. The womens’ rights advocates are certainly industrious and persistent enough to win the admiration of the men. even if they do not gain the right to vote. Wherever a convention, con- ference or any assemblage meets, be {t political £octal or religious, there some of the female suf Tragists can be found knocking at the doors for admission with the view of urging their claims and principles. It begins to look asif the re- Publican national convention will allow a dele- gation of women seats upon the floor. Demo- crats generally appear to believe in St. Paul's idea of woman—that she was created for the home circle—and they refuse to let her into their conventioas. The proposed new railway route between ‘Washington aud New York, to which reference Was made in these columns a day or two ago, has come to a suddenend. The Westchester and Philadelphia railroad, which was to form the Bucleus of the route between Philadelphia and Baltimore, has been bought outright by the old monopoly, the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Company. Col. McComb, the projec- tor of the new route, and the Westchester road could not come to terms. It Is his intention now, it fs sald, to build an entire new line be- tween Baltimore and Philadelphia as soon as he an secure a charter in Pennsylvania. He has one partly passed in Maryland. It isto be hoped he may succeed. Two routes between New York and Washington, or rather between Philadelphia and Baltimore, are badly needed. ———~-___ The indications now are that there will be Only four starters tn the race for the nomtna- on at Chicago. Within the twelve days inter- Vening it 1s not probable that any new candl- date will be brought out. The line of distinc- tion between the active candidates and the dark horses can now be drawn. Grant, Blaine, Sherman and Edmunds are the only names likely to be presented to the convention prior to the first ba’ While it 1s said that Senator to the use of his name, he to alow the delegates who have been instructed for hi:n the privilege of record- ing their votes tn his favor. Should netther of these candidates receive the nomination upon the first or second ballot, then the chances are that the dark horses will all be entered, and ‘there will probably be a lively time of it. Tarred paper is likely to go out of use as a Yoofing material. A letter from Milton states that it was largely responsible for the quick and wide-spread proportions of the fire in that town, blazing sheets of it being whirled through the heated alr and lighting up scores of simul- taneous fires. Similar results, 1t will be remem- berd, happened at the great Chicago conilagra- dion of 1 ——--—____ Note ts made of the fact that Senator Ea- tsunds was in New York for three days recently without being interviewed. Tiere Is nothing noteworthy In this. It is easy enough to avoid am interview when an effort is made to that end.
