Among the audience Wie many Senators, Rep- resentatives and prominent government ofici- als. Judge Strong stated, briefly, the object of the meeting to be to encourage a more proper regard for the American Sabbath than now pre- vails In soine sections. Rev. Wallace Atterbury, ot the New York Sabbath committee, addressed the meeting, saying the American observance of Sunday was a natural outgrowth and not the result of outward law; that each of the original colonies protected it by legislation. He reviewed the movements in this country and Europé for its maintenance. He contrasted the quiet en- trance of the President into the church, with the movements in public of the Russian’ Czar, and the guards of military police which always accompany him, and attributed the self-control of the free citizen to his Intelligence and virtue, to which tn no inconsiderable degree the Sun- day observance ministered. Hon, J. Randolph Tucker, of Virginia, spoke of the natural basis of Sunday observance and its right, as a popu- lar institution, to be naized, by law. Claughton, referred to the examining com- mittee, THE REPUBLICAN BUILDING SUITS, In the case of W. J. Miller, trustee, against Hopkins et al., Judge Cox delivered the opinion of the court, giving the relief asked. ‘This case arises out of the Kepuhlican building sults, in which, on oa obtained against W. J. Murtagh, certain conveyances were sougat to be set aside, and the principal question was that a judgment obtained by Cornish and patd by Murtagh could not be continued for the pur- poses of a trust. The court directed that a de- cree be returned directing the sale of the prop- erty, and that the proceeds be applied to the a of the creditors. Notice of appeal was given. CONVEYANCE OF PROPERTY TO WIFE DECLARED vor. Judge Cox also delivered the opinion of the court in the case of Truesdell agt. Wise, in | Which the bill fs flled_ to set aside certain deeds made to the wife, and subject the property to the payment of certain judgments. Tne court sald that the indebtedness accrued In 1875, prior to the execution of the deeds, and they enter- tained not a shadow of doubt but that the con- veyances were vold. The court below had, hoy ever, allowed a Dill of review to be filed. 89% jy, plew of this they gould only scree wnat tae convey ances were void, OTHER OPINTO Judge Cox, in the case of Jackson agt. Davis, delivered the opinion of the court, holding that the purchasers are personally responsible to | complainants, and directing a decree as to the credits. Judge Wylie delivered the opinion in the case of Davis Sewing Machine Co. agt. Rothwell « Richards. In Ubis case the defendants were sureties on a guarantee of John W. Poler, as agent of the company, and he having fatied in the sum of $1,400 to $1,500, the company entered suit against the sureties. ’ The defence was that they were never notified of the acceptance ot the guarantee. It would seem on first sigh: that the plaintiffs should recover, but the Su- preme Court had decided that it was necessary | for the party to give notice, so that the guarani- ‘tees should be iit possession to take measures to | save themselves. ‘The decree below was allirm- ed, and an appeal was noted. In the case of Frank Jordan Judge Wylie de livered the opinion of the court. “Jordan was anit and battery with intent to kill Samuel Rah The case comes up on exceptions to the clu:ge of the court below di- recting the jury to take in consideration the posi- tions of parties rather than the testimony of * these lying witnesses.” The court thought it Was better proof that one party was retreating, in the ballentering the back of the neck than Ube testimony that he was approaching.
