Both these awencies can therefore be availed of in sending to Tax StaR Sdvertisementa, orders for the paper to be served, Rews, or any information, at any hour of the day free of charxe. These facilities are a creat conve- mience, and will be appreciated by the customers of ‘Tus Sras. ‘The Double ‘Sheet ‘To-merrew- ‘THE Stak Will be published as usual to-mor- Tow In eight page form of fifty-six column: Advertisers and newsdealers will please send in their orders as early as practicable for this enlarged and extra edition. The number of lew advertisements printed last Saturday was 125. The number thus far printed in May is 974. ——--+e-—___ If Grant and Tilden are the presidential nominees of the repuolican and democratic Parties, respectively, the campaign will. in all probability, be a tame one. There will be a large element of disgusted voters in each party, and about the only way in which they can express their dissatisfaction will be to sulk and Stay away from the polls. It will be too late In the day to run a third ticket with any show of success. Grant would, no doubt, win the race, and once more take possession of the White House. As against Tilden he would certainly Carry several of the southern states, and those ‘Votes, added to what he would get in the north, Would makehim ane* inner in the race. Thousands of democra he south, under the conviction that Tilden wuld not carry New York, and that without that state there would be no bope ef his election, would endeavor to make their peace with the next administration by voting for Grant. One effect of such a canvass would therefore be to disrupt the solid south. The democratic hold upon that section 1s not secure it is, and it fs steadily growing weaker. Then, again, the policy of economy, Which bas been enforced in Congress by the Men who manage the party is very distasteful to the south, where appropriations for all sorts Of internal improvements are wanted. The people of it section have fully shared in the general prosperity of the country of the last Year, and they are now beginning to think more Of their material Interests than of politics. The Bominati: ofan acceptable ti at Cincin_ ssure the vote of the solid south cracy Mext fall, because It would naturally tusp‘re a hope of success; but the se- lection of a weak ticket will lead to a general breaking up politically In those states, and every Mab Will look out for himself. ——————see--____ ‘The defeat of the resolution to unseat Senator Kellogg fs now assured, and there is accordingly agnashing of teeth in the democratic party. Senator Hampton’s speech yesterday in sup- port of the doctrine of rvs adjydicata as applied to this case was the first open expression of the democratic opposition to the views of the ma- jority of the committee on elections. Up to the delivery of that speech the advocates ef the Majority resolution still expected to be able to prevent democrats from voting against it. They hoped to bring sufficient party pressure to bear toinduce Senator Hampton and other demo- crats who agree with him toat least refrain from voting, but there is no longer any chance for this. Senators Butler, Pendleton and Bay- ard are to deliver arguments in support of Kel- Jogg’s title to his seat, and the Indications now are that the resolution to oust Kellogg will be defeated by eight or ten majority. It is a good sign, politically, when questions of this char- acter are settled In Congress upon their merits, and not with a sole view to party necessity. eee The Philadelphia Tones says the rebel “brig- adiers” in the House hate ex-Governor Curtin, of Pennsylvania, because he was active in sup- Plying troops to the Union army during the war, and that that ts the reason they refused to vote him the seat he contended for In Congress. Possibly even a “rebel brigadier” might have been induced to vote against seating Curtin be- cause he did not believe the latter was elected. At any rate, the Times seems to have thought the brigadiers pretty clever fellows until they voted against Curtin. SS ———— The commission appointed by the French government to consider the propriety of re- storing the palace of the Tulleries has reported in favor of its thorough reconstruction, and re- commends that the new bullding be converted into a magnificent museum. It isto be hoped the recommendation of the commission will be carried out, at least so far as to restore the Palace. The Tuileries, before its destruction by the communists, was one of the features of Parts, and tt was one of the most interesting historical buildings of the world. Now revivi- fied and prosperous, France in its enterprise and progressiveness ought to destroy the un- Sightly remainder of the vandalism of commun- ism and erect upon the site a building that, though it will not be the old Tuileries, willserve to keep alive its history. ——————<+e-—___ It might be supposed that the democratic party had learned from expertence that “cheese- Paring economy” does not pay as a political in- vestment; but it has not. The democrats inthe House vie with each other in offering amena- ments to the legislative appropriation bill to ut down the wages of watchmen, laborers and other low-salaried government employes. The poor man who performs the duty of night-watch- man for $72) a year must be eut down to and so on; but the high-salaried employés, whose work Is light. are either not molested or their pay fs increased. Cutting down the wages of government employés does not save the tax- payers of this country enough to make it a mat- ter of any Interest to them, and no party gains aby votes by It. —_—_—_~--—______ One of the latest rumors about Tilden {s that Speaker Randall, who will go to the Cincinnati convention as a substitute for Alderman Mc- Mullin, of Philadelphia, will have in his pocket @ letter of withdrawal from the old man of Gramercy Park; but this letter Isonly to be used 4m the event that it becomes certain Tilden can- not get the nomination. This may be true, as it is reasonable to suppose Tilden would rather withdraw than be eaten, but those are not wanting who say thai Mr. Randall is thinking more about helping hin.setf to the nomination than helping Tilden. They allege that he isa candidate, and means to do his best to get the Momination. His friends tn the Pennsylvanta delegation do not pretend to deny this any jonger. —_---______ Now that two young bloods, sprigs of no- Dility, have got into a quarrel in England over @ gambling debt, the “honah” of the sporting circles and infallibility of the betting book bid fair to be destroyed. Sir Wiilfam Call, baronet threatened to thrash Mr. Sydney Padget unk the latter forked over the sum of 1,711 pounds Sterling which the former clatmed he had won from him. Padget took the code duello in his own hands, and addressed a letter to Call, say- ing he had no desire for a street braw! pro- ceeding unfit for gentlemen,” but Inviting the baronet to meet him in France, where they Would find seconds and settle the dispute like ihigh-toned chaps. Call replied, very perti- nently. that he was not willing to afford his al- eged debtor “so admirable opportunity ot wip- Dg me out and my claim against you at the Same time.” He repeated his threat of personal chastisement by reserving the right to make an example of Padget “when and where” he (Call) Might think At. Padget then sought protection ithe courts. What a (rightful illustration of the degeneracy of English blue blood! ——__—--____ It Is suggested by wiseacres a3 an om!nous Political sign that Stephen A. Douglas, a Chi- cago man and U. S. Senator, laid the foundation of the split which rent the democratic party asunder and led to its defeat, and that now John A. Logan, another Chicago man and U.S. Senator has sharpened a wedge that may split the republican party. Unfortunately for the prediction, however, the underlying difficulty 4n this case has nothing like the proportions or character of the one which disrupted the demo- Gratic party at that time, TYLES. _ SPRING I call attention to the following BEAUTIFUL AND SEASONABLE —— of CLO1HING for Men and Boys, which may dy be seen, among mauy ether varieties, 02 my coun- The “New Color” Suit, A new and handsome style in Rote fabrics.
