Mr. Lovejoy referred to an editorial in Tez STAR proposing the erection cf a monument to the memory Of ex-Mayor Seaton, one of the ear'y irtends of popular education in this Dis- trict, as deserving the commendation of the public. ‘fo carry out the suggestion, he offered a resolution, which was adopted, that “the Present prosperous condition of ‘the public hools of the District of Columbia furnishes a ject of congratulation to the iviends of edu- cation at the capital; the past services of the pioneers of our system always deserve and de- mand grateful recognition at the hands of their successors and the community;” “tnat the memory and services of the late Wiliam W. Lovejoy, Curis, Baldwin, Middleton, White, Fairley and Brooks, NEW PROPOSITIONS. A resolution was adopted directing that the committee on teachers examine and report as to e best methods of imparting instructions in reading and elocution in the normal and ad- vanecd grammar schools. A resolution was laid over that, in addition to the genera! man- agement of the two normal and advanced gram- mar scaools conferred upon the commitiee of teachers, the committee shall be authorized to uch chan; in the course of study as they may deem advisable. EMULATION AMONG zoe IN THE MATTER GF Mr. Curtis called attention to what he thought was a growing evil—the spirit of emulation among the pupils (especially of the normal schools) in the a of dress, and he hardly knew how to meet it. Mr. Lovejoy remarked that when the normal school was opened, he had taken it on himself to tell the young iadies that there should be no more trails. Mr. Fairley said it was rather a bad _commen- tary on the intelligence of the puptls to dress as they did at the norme! school commencement last season. Mr. Curtis suggested a resolution “that the board recommend that in the closing exercises of all the schools, Including the normal school, stop! licity of dress on the part of the pupils be bserved, and the teachers be requested to urge ts eee upon their scholars.” lopt Mr. Lovejoy claimed hat this was not a sub- ject fer the board, and it was beyond the scope of their power to untform the pupils. He sug gested that the discussion would accomplish the object. Mr. Curtis remarked that something should be done, for he knew of parents so poor that tbey could searcely eke out an existence, who to please their children had them appear in costly Oresses, and some families would go hungry to buy dresses for these occasions. =. Brooks remarked on the extravazance in sashes, costing from a dollar up, and noted some instances ot puplis being called up to re- ceive diplomas, bursting into tears because they did not have sashes. ‘The resolution was adopted, Messrs. Lovejoy, Pope and Simith, voting in the negative.
