THE EVENING STAR. (o ASHINGTON- ¥ 11, 1880. CROSBY 8. NOYES.... Editor. TUESDAY... than double that of any other daily paper Dublished in Washington, and equaltotha of all the other daily payers here added to- gether. ‘THe Sax has a direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest news by its own operator from every quarter up to within s few moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re- eeives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. ‘The state of Illinois does not boom for Grant with that degree of enthusiasm his friends counted on. The promises of the third-termers that the home of the ex-President would give him a “rousing old send-off” have not been fulfilled, and it is evident now that if the state convention fs carried for Grant at all it will be by a very narrow majority, and that even such Majority can only be obtained by the employ- ment of the most objectionable machine meth- ods. The bolt of the Grant delegates from the Cook county convention, yesterday, shows that they are desperate. The combination of Wash- burne and Blaine delegates gave the anti-Grant element control of the convention, and while it appears that they used the power they had ob- tained in a despotic manner, the republicans of the state will hardly decide that this justified a bolt on the part of the minority. By contesting the delegation from Cook county, the Grant men can shut that county out from participa. tion In the organization of the state convention. Outside of that county an undisputed majortty Of Grant delegates have been chosen, and by this plan bis friends can get control of the convention. But this sort of tactics ‘Will not help their cause in the end. A drawn battle ts nearly as bad asa defeat in this case. Its friends have claimed all along that the Grant movement occupied a plane way above ordinary politics, and the very fact of their abandonment of this ground Is a partial defeat. ‘The county republican conventions in Illinois have demonstrated that the third term is very unpopular in that state. Thousands have, no doubt, joined in sending Grant delegates to the state convention under protest. They were loath to see General Grant, or a movement hay- ing his name at Its head, defeated in the very State in which he resides, and to prevent this these men have consented to support him against thelr judgment. The revolt in New sylvania against the Grant in- d seriously damaged the move- behalf, but a whole-hearted and en- thustastic endorsement by Illinois would have repaired this to a great extent. A forced decla- ration for Grant {n his own state, however, will Settle his candidacy, and may cause his with- drawal. Within a few weeks the national tickets of Doth the great political parties will be placed 4m the field, and yet the smartest political prophet in the country cannot tell what the issues in the coming campaign will be. The truth fs that all fundamental questions of dif- ference between the republican and democratic parties seem to have disappeared. The war issues have mostly died out, in spite of the efforts of politicians to keep them alive. The uational finances are in such a_ healthy condition that there 1s no possibility of exciting the public upon an issue of that character. The issues of the canvass will, therefore, not be joined until after the nomination of the tickets, and much willl depend upon the composition of the latter. Should the demccrats nominate Tilden, the cipher dispatches, income tax suit and railroad Wrecking charges will supply the republicans With their campaign ammunition. Grant’s nomination by the republicans would revive allthe ugly things said about his administra- tion, and besides the democrats would proceed to show that a third term meant the empire. ‘The fact that there are no distinct issues in the canvass, prior to the nominations, proves that the country is getting along very nicely, ana that the people have ceased to take stock in the eries of politicians that the nation can only be saved by listening to them. —-<-e -__ At the recent Conference of the Colored Methodist Church in St. Louis. Dr. Turner, a colored editor of Philadelphia, in the course of some remarks, said: “The negro will not be satisfied till he ts invited into the parlor instead of the kitchen of the white man, when he 1s his equal in tatelit- gence and in wealth. Poverty is not the equal of wealth, nor ignorance the equal of intelli- gence; but when the poor man grows rich and the ignorant man intelligent, then ail barriers to social equality on account of color shoud give we: and social equality be established be- ‘tween those tn wealth and intelligence equal.” These remarks were vociferously applauded. Dr. Turner should first direct his influence to the destruction of social equality among the negroes, if he really desires to elevate them in the social scale. With few exceptions the col- ored people do not make any pretense of main- taining different social grades. This is particu- larty true in the southern states. When set free, the blacks there all found themselves upon acommon level, but that Is not their condition Bow. Very many of them since the war have attained distinction, and to carry out Dr. ‘Turner's idea those who have made their way ‘up in life should only recognize socially the Others who attain the same standard. The maintenance of different social grades among the colored people, just as these grades now exist among the whites, wouid be a great step towards elevating them. Excursions are now advertised cippati and St. Louis, a distance of about 310 malles, for $4.00 for the round trip of 639 miles. ‘This is one of the direct results of competing railway lines between the two cities. For want Of an opposition line on that part of the route lying between the cities of Baletmore and Patl- adelphia, travelers from New York to Washing- ton, and rice rersa, are compelled to Pay the exorbitant price of 50 each Way,—the dis- tance being only some 225 miles. Between New York and Boston, a distance some ten miles Sreater than from Washington to New York, the fare has never, we believe, exceeded $5.00 @ach way, while during the summer season, ‘When competing boat lines are running on the Sound, the rate ts cften as low as one dollar. +2ce-—___ The common testimony not only from repub- cans but from men cf all shades of political Opinion is that the late attempts, and Particu- larly the last effort of the New York Tins, to injure Secretary Sherman’s chances as a presi- dential candidate have fafled of their effect. In fact the impression is that hts prospects have rather been improved than damaged by these assaults. There is always danger that such attacks may be overdene and become a sort of Political boomerang, to return and upset those who make them. +<.-—____ ‘The enemies of Sir William Vernon Harcourt have effectually avenged all their grievances by defeating him tn his recent contest for re- election to Parliament from Oxford. Tue sting ‘Of defeat is rendered tenfold more bitter by rea- on of the fact that Sir William, haviug been Madea member of the new cabinet, had, ac- Cording to the law, to once more go before his Constituents to receive their endorsement and ‘Vote Of confidence. It was, in fact, an expres- Ston of want of confidence; but fn all probabil- ty It will not deprive him of his Place in the wabinet. Some accommodating liberal repre- Senting a safe borough will, no doubt, be in- Guced to retire in favor of Sir William, or per- haps Mr. Gladstone will nomtnate him for the Peerage asa mark of his confidence anda re- Duke to the Oxford constituency. cre ARO 20 Sik anc aa Tse tor ase Wool Grenadines, from 20 picoes All-Silk Black Grenadines, from $1.50 t> beady ye ‘Silk and W ‘ool Grenadines, in colors, from pe ook await a MOURNING GOOD! rail assorted. - stock was never 80 large an: OtWe are pow off tirable fabrics for ‘Wear, had is "W.
