VRMENTS OF James cArNK CANAL In reply to a note from Hon. M. C. This work Inyo be of the appropriation from $5,000 to $20,000, but would, in the opinion of the Commissioners, be great, economy in the end, and would be in acconlance with the policy of reclaiming the flats and improving the river front, which cannot be permanently aceomplished in this locality without such ex- tension of the retaining wal Out of Door Sports. A COCKING MAIN WON BY WASHINGTON FOWLS OVER BALTIMORE BIRDS. At Bill Wade's tavern, four miles south of Bal- timore, there was a bloody cock fight yesterd1y between Baltimore county birds and Washing- ton birds. About 200 oe men from Wash- ington, Baltimore and the county saw the tight. The Baltimore Gazette this morning gives an account of the affair. The main was to consist of eleven fights. The Baltimore county birds were owned by “Billy” Randalls, George, Jack and Bill Wade, and the Washington cocks by Webb Maddux and Charles Eslin. Billy Ran- dalls is a well-known Baltimore sportsman. Webb Maddux, who is a brother of . Clay Maddux, of Baltimore, 1s also well known, and hails trom Virginia, while Charlle Eslin 13 a vet- eran cock-raiser from Washington, The fight was for $25 on each contest, and $100 on the main. The Baltimore bird for the first fight was given to Pat Spellman and the Washington cock to Charite in. The fight from the ggart Was a one-sided affair, and the Washington cock, after an uninteresting st ran his antagon- ist out of the pit, amid the derisive jeers of those who won on the fight. Baltimore next entered a black against a red presented by Wash- ington. The black jumped at the red, and in an instant the cold steel of the gaff had penetrated the latter’s back one and a-half inches, but the red soon recovered, lifting his head up and giving a crow of defiance. On the second round the gaff of the black cock was driven through the red’s wing, which disabled him and lost him the fight. ie black floored him at length and picked his eyes out, the crowd standing by all the while and relishing it hugely. This ended the second fight, the Baltimore bird winning the mateh in twenty minntes. At 2 o'clock the third fight was called, Eslin with the Washington cock, a pure white, and Pat Spellman with the Baltimore,a red and white, took their places. The betting began with odds in favor of the Baltimore cock, bu‘ was floored, heen ist Winning the matc On the fourth tight Washington entered a red cock, part game and part common, and Balti- more a gray one. Ateach succeeding round the gray deait the red terrible thrusts, and he Was runaround the pit and completely van- quished by the Baltimore bird. The fifth fignt began with a dominick by the Baitimores and a blue and red for Washington, and after a hard fight, during which the Washington cock’s heel Was driven through his adversary’s eyes, com pletely putting them out, the Balilmore owners gave up the fight. In the sixth fight a black Di Was entered by Baltimore and a red mui by Washington. The Baltimore bird’s eyes were Seon put out by his adversary. Sull he fought With wondertul obstinacy. He had received hts death blow and Eslin wanted to bet $0 to$i that his bird would kill him outright. Tae owner ot the Baltimore bird, however, took him away, and gave the fight tothe Washington bi In the seventh fight the most brutal scenes Were rehearsed, the Washington bird being this ume Mein spy by his Baluimore antagonist. The eighth fight began with the betting ail ia favor of the Washington bird, belonging to Webb Maddux, but ufter a long and severe struggle he suecumbed and sought safety Hight, giving the victory to the Baltimore Dird. The ninth fight was also a closely-contested one, the Baltimore cock killing the Washing- ton’ cock and winning. ‘The tenth fight re- sulted in a victory for the Washington bird, which gave the Washington men the main. By this time it was7o’clock. Night was coming on, but it was decided to fight the eleventh cobtest, which was done, giving the Washing- tonians the main by seven to four. Those pres- ent were highly pleased with the day’s sport. and returned home on thes o'clock train. About 31,000 changed hands during the day, and at the end of the sport twelve cocks lay dead, having been killed outright in the fight or so badly maimed as to necessitate thelr slaughter. The Washington fowls were of superior weight and frame to the Baltlmores and thus had the ad- vantage from the start. BASE BALL. The Nationals had the day in Albany yester- day all to themselves.
