PECIAL OFFERINGS . (pean FOR POST OFFICE THE EVENING STAR. | WASHINGTON WEDNESDAY ... CROSBY 8. NOYES.... Editor. fhe Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper Dublished in Washington, and equaltotha of all the other daily payers here added to- oether. ‘Tax Star. has s direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telewraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest ews by its own operator from every quarter up to within a few moments of going to press. It is the The Effect of the Veto. Whatever may be the effect of the President's veto upon political parties and prospects there 1s no doubt but that it will prolong the present session of Congr It presents a new issue to the majority, and one that they will take time to deliberate upon. The expressions of demo- crats with regard to the veto and the policy that ought to be pursued, show that there are differences of opinion among them to ad- just. Some of them are fn favor of another Gefault upon the marshals’ appropriation while others advise the passage of a separate bill con! the provision requiring election marshals to be appointed by the courts. It 1s apparent that the prevailing sentiment among the majority ts In favor of a contest with the executive department on this question. The opinion of those who urge this course fs that the issue ratsed is a safe one upon which an appeal to the country may be taken; that leading men of ail politics have admitted that the federal election laws ought to be amendedso as to de- prive them of thefr partisan features, and the fact that such an amendment was contained in an apprepriation bill will not, In the es- timation of voters generally, constitute a Valid reason for its rejection by the Executive. Other members ot the party remember that the democracy burnt fts fingers with precisely such issues at the extra session, and it will be diffi- cult to lead these members into another contest of this character. The democratic majority in the House fs so small that even a few dissenters wield Immense Influence m party councils, and therefore it is Ukely that some days will be consumed in agreeing upon the Une of policy to be pursued. The calculations for an early adjournment are ail upset by the veto and the prospect is that the session will be prolonged away into the summer. If an ad- ment cannot be reached before the meet- 3 of the nationa aventions, members will Pe indifferent as to the length of the session, J with the veto and the questions it raises “d to the appropriation bills and other !m- fortant business remaining to be disposed of tt 45 not probable that any expectations of getting through within a month are now indulged in by ary of the congressmen. The democratic primaries and county con- ventions in Ohio ate that the state conven- tle be practically solid for Senator Thur- man. Even the opponents of the Senator in is own State admit this, but they endedVvor to e movement in his favor by talking of” entary vote on the first ballot. This 45 not what Mr. Thurman's friends are working for. They mean to put bis name before the Cin- cipnati convention as an active, aggressive can- didate for the nomination: and as the basis to his candidacy they Intend to have the Ohio dele- gation committed to him first and last, if they can. Their theory of Thurman's avallability {s based, first, upon his strength and popularity In Ohio, ard second upon the division of the party in New York. They argue that the dis- Sensions in New York cannot be healed so as to bring out the unfted vote of the party for any candidate; that any tieket which satisties the Tilden faction will not be acceptable to Ta aby, and rice versa. Therefore it be- mes necessary for the democracy to qlrect its attention and its hopes of the presi- dency to some other state than New York. Gbio is mentioned asthe only state that can take the place of New York in democratic cal- culations, and Thurman, it is claimed, ts the only democrat who can carry Ohio. This is the precise situation of the Thurman movement, and there are leading democratic members of both houses of Congress who are active workers init. Those who count upon disposing of the Senator from Ohio with a complimentary vote at Cincinnati will find themselves mistaken, un- less they manage to overthrow the Plan of the Canvass in hisfavor by depriving him of the support of the Ohio delegation. —---___ Col Fred Grant has been talking to an inter- viewer about his father’s candidacy. Accord- ing to this young man, Gen. Grant thinks it possible that the time may come when it may be of vital importance for the country ta elect a President for a third term, and tho" efore he (Grant) will be rendering a pubi. service in dreaking down the barrier esto” ysned against such a proceeding by the Pi cegents of Wash- ington and Jefferson. Ts; ts looking a long Ways ahead for a jU“iitication of the present third-term move? a: Even Gen. Grant will probably admit “pat the time when It is of vital importance ‘4 elect a President for the third time bas "ot yet arrived, and perhaps he would soever, further and admit that if it ever does ‘ati e the country will be able to deaf with the ruerg a compli —<—<—$___<.-__ Immediately after the selection of Cincinnat! asthe place for the meeting of the National Democrate Convention. agents of Tilden en- gaged a large number of rooms at the prin- ¢fpal hotels in that city for the period covering the session of the convention. If there was any doubt, anywhere, as to what use Tilden in- tended to make of these rooms it was settled by the declaration of Mr. Scott, at the Harrisburg convention, the other day. He announced in a Ioud voice that ample accommodations for the tegation at Cincinnati had been se- ed. Mr. Scott is the acknowledged Til mabeger in Pernsylyar. y made an ad- hat re y stated that there are a mocratie Senators who feel that cannot conscientiously vote to oust Kel logg and to these hesitating democrats Mr. Vest appealed with the force of his argument. TLS Was a confirmation of the report that the democratic line would not come up solidly to ‘the support of the resolution. Mr. Vest added that the wavering senators are all from the South.
