NATIONAL THEATER.—There was a crowded house at the National last evening despite the stormy weather. The opera—‘Le Postillon de Lonjumeau”—was given admirably. Capoul and Mile. Since Thomas Smothers received his sentence of thirty years for rape on Miss Liens on Tues- day last, he seems to be somewhat relieved in mind, and evidently has been fearful that he would be lynched ere this, and now feels that his life is secure. There ts an indication of his guilt, although he protests his innocence, and that is he has no complaints to make of the Justice of his sentence, although he thinks the manner in which he was identified was not as fair as might have been. He positively asserts too, that other cases charged against him are all wrong, and states that he did not see Miss Smith or Miss Wilson, nor had he ever been concerned in any such case here or elsewhere.
