THE EVENING STAR. Of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. Tar Stan has a direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest ‘Bews by its own operator from every quarter up to Within s few moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re- ceives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. The Double Sheet ‘Fo-morrow. Although two editions of the double sheet or eight page Star of last Saturday were printed, the supply on hand was exhauste| by Monday. Newsdealers will therefore please send in their Orders as early a3 practicable for this enlarged and extra edition. Tug Stax is now served on the evening of {ts publication in towns within @ radius of fifty miles of Washington, viz: Lees- burg, ndria, Clifton, Fredericksburg (Va.), Frederick, Roekville, Annapolis, Laurei, Relay House, Hyattsville, Point of Rocks (Md.) and Brightwood. The number of new aavertise- ments printed in April 1s 1,936, which Is ex- ceeded by but very few papers in the country. Advertisers will confer a favor by sending in their orders as early as possible. ~ Notwithstanding Tilden’s infirm condition physically and feeble state politically, he is a hard man to kill off. Hie generally manages to pull through dangerous places without belng hurt. It was predicted that the Pennsylvania democratic convention would drive the last nail in his political coffin, but if the old man was damaged any he does not seem to be aware of it. A majority of the convention was clearly against Tilden, but the harmonious program adopted prevented that opposition from being ade manifest, and this was, at least, a nega- ‘ory for the Gramercy park statesman. ‘sarming his opponents in the Keystone ite, Tilden displayed his abliity as a political ategist. A declaration against him by the nvention would have been fatal to his candi_ acy, and when he saw that a contest would «nd in defeat for his cause he latd aside the nplements of war, and held up a flag «{ truce. The result is that if Pennsylvania has uot done him any good it has not done him any harm, and heisina position to go ahead with his schemes to capture other state delegations. The rejection of the unit ruic in the conven- vention was not a victory for Tilden, while it Was a defeat for Senator Wallace. The Tilden- ites had the supportof the friends of all the other candidates, except Gen. Hancock, in vot- ing down that resolution. In the delegation there are quite a number of pronounced Bay- ard men, and they want the privilege of voting for their candidate, even though he may not be the choice of a majority. The defeat of Colonel Barr, of Pittsburg. for an elector-at large, was on the other hand a triumph for Senator Wal- lace, Which shows that on all questions except the unit rule he had the support of a majority of the convention. The Pennsylvania delega- tion to Cincinnati, according to the best inform- ation, 1s two-thirds anti-Tilden, but the rule at Grammercy Park {s to always take half a loaf Father than not get any of the bread. re __§_— In excavating at {ts base for the purpose of ‘Strengthening the foundation of the Washing- ton National Monument a portion of the origi- mal corner-stone, which was laid with such tm- Posing ceremonies on the 4th day of July, fS4s, ‘Was to-day exposed to view. This stone, which lies at the northeast corner of the structure, our readers of the present generation may be inter- ested in knowing, is of white Maryland marble, composed of the large sparkling crystals which So strongly mark that formation. Only a por- Uon of the north side and a little of the top of the stone is visible, and no portion ot its inscription is to be seen The cavity or receptacle, which contains the numerous articles deposited in the corner- ‘stone at the time of laying it, is securely cov- ered by a thick stone slab, hermetically sealed and secured still further by tron bolts carried through, and no doubt strongly fastened on the lower side. This slab or cap contains an in- Seription, cut in net very legible characters. ‘The only part of this legend that could be seen reads:—“Kutherford. Washn,” and doubtless is the name or a part of the record of the stone cutter who presented or prepared the cap. This ts, we believe, the third time the corner stone has been exposed to view since the work of excavation and strengthening the foundation Of the monument has been going on; and after it ts hidden from sight by the stone work and concrete put in piace this afternoon it Is not likely that it will ever be seen again by mortal eyes until in some far future age, when the vast structure shall have fallen to ruins, through the action of time and the elements, or been prostrated by some extraordinary convul- sion of nature. —_—_+--_____ ‘The Arkansas republican convention tnstruct- ed for Gen. Grant, and the delegation ts headed by ex-Senator Dorsey, an ardent thtrd-termer, ‘Who will never desert the ex-President while a Possibility of nominating him remains. It Begins to look as if the boast of the Grant managers that they would get votes enough in the south, combined with those of New York, Pennsylvania and Ilnois—which latter state they claim with contidence—to nominate Grant On the first ballot, will be made good. The re- Publican states of the north may not like to have a candidate forced upon them by the dem- Ocratic states of the south, but that is a ques- ton for the party managers to settle. Legislatures seem to be degenerating. Even that of Massachusetts, according to the Spring- field Republican, has tailed to meet the req jquire- mentsof the times. That paper says “the state Would have been better off, morally and peca- iar ily, if the last legislature had never met.” In Maine they had two legislatures not very long ago, and still a great many of the people of that state are not satisfied. They complain of both. —_—_—_—_+--+—__ If Mr. Garfield really ts a dark horse, as many Of his friends think, and if the press has any- thing lke the political influence It is supposed to have, it will hardly be worth while to take Off his blanket at the Chicago races. For one reason or another the newspapers of the coun- try all think he has the power to abolish the Present wood pulp tariff swindle if ne were so disposed; and because he makes no effort to that end they would make it very lively for him if be should get on the track. The goads and Pricks put upon a Roman race-horse for his Wild run on the Corso in carnival times are nothing to what Mr. Garfield would receive from the hands of the press men when ‘he is brought to the starting post. —~<-e—__. ‘The British public executioner, William Mar- ‘Wood, is now on a visit to the United States, tn- vestigating our methods of capital punishment. He was shown through the Tombs prison in New York yesterday, and expressed himself as more than pleased with the arrangements, ex- Cept the scaffold for the execution of condemned Criminals. He thought the drop welghtsentirely ‘Wo heavy, and disapproves of the America sys- tem as being cruel and painful, and not at all 38 expeditious as the English system. Mr. Marwood, like one of his illustrious predeces- Sors, believes tn “working ‘em off easy,” and he is studying now with the view of giving the fatal plunge a scientific twist. The English un- fortunates who are doomed to pass through his hands ought to appreciate his efforts to make their last moments comfortable. ‘The convicted “Pennsylvania Ie legislature bribers will see a welcome ray of hope in the yecommendation of the board of pardons an- ‘Bounced in our dispatches to-day. If the law does not justify imprisonment, as they think, ‘that, we suppose, should settle the matter. ‘Most people, however, will regret that the law doesn’t provide just that punishment. And it Service of that state to so amend it, Almost any rogue can pay a fine; but when it comes to @ prison garb and prison fare, that ts a terror of @ very different kind, CRDERSUL BARGAINS.
