At the very last moment and just whea the Country was anticipating a fight between the democratic factions at Harrisburg, Pa., the leaders came together, and after shaking hands Adjusted their differences upon satisfactory terms. This union of democratle forces in Pennsylvania means a great deal more than a Cessation of hostilities between Wallace and Randali and their respective followers. It Teeans an united and determined effort to carry me state In the presidential election, and, nej- ithstanding the large republican majorities in 1e late elections, the attempt is by no means a opeless one. The democratic party in that sate, during the last few years, has proved a mfdable competitor whenever {t has been aited. Its worst defeats have been caused by internal dissensions. The + ity of Philadelphia is the republican strong- old. Outside the city the state is democratic, and the republican plan of cam- paign invariably fs to roll up a sufficient vote in the city to overcome that of their opponents outside of it. The two democratic factions in Philadelphia have hitherto not only refused to unite, but they have fought each other bitterly. Each preterred to aid the republicans to power Father than see its rival succeed, and the effect has been to reduce the democratic vote. The quarrel which was ended and the truce that was made at Harrisburg to Philadelphia. | Elsewhere throughout the state there waS no realdvision in the ranks. The arrangement entered into at the State convention puts the party upon a better basis than it has occupled since the war, and, to say the least, it lends a shade of doubt to the result of the election in that state next November. By this agreement the revolting faction secure: reeognition and pledges itself In return to ac- kmowledge the regularity and the authority of the local party organization and to submit to it. This organization ts compact and complete, and is in the hands of some of the very best political Managers that the democrats have. Speaker Randall told the convention, when ratifying the terms of the agreement, it was “the happiest moment of his political life,” and while over- Sanguine republicans may pooh-pooh the affair and maintain that Pennsylvania {s solidly an- chored tn the republican faith the shrewd party managers will set about preparing for a meres contest and a hard-won victor; — South Carolina adds fourteen votes to the third-term cause, at Chicago, while Ohio, as was Predicted by the best-informed politicians, tg Solid for Secretary Sherman. If there was any opposition to General Grant tn the South Caro- lina convention {t was so overwhelmed by the shouts of applause for the ex-President that it did not express itself. The convention con- sisted of eighty colored and forty white dele- Gates, and each race seemed to vie with the other in honoring General Grant. The delega- tion was not only instructed to vote as a unit for him to the end of the contest, but—according to the resolution—“‘solemnly pledgea” to do so. The action of the Georgia republican conven- vention admontshed the Grant managers that they could not trust altogether to the spontane- ousness of the third-term movement in the South, and they sent some active workers down there to heip it along. The effect of this work Was visible in South Carolina yesterday. see actually applies only EPORT OF THE CONDITION oF THE NATIONA AL METROPOLITAN AT WASHISGLUN, D. C., AT THE CLOs? Va., with vigor, and the result will afford a test of the strength of their proposed independeat electoral ticket. They go Into the contest as a Separate and independent organtzation, and with the avowed purpose of taking a hand In Bational politics. In the state election last fall the readjusters were not strong enough to rua @ ticket in Richmond, and should the; win the city election, or even cast a respectable vote. it Would show that they are gaining in strength. ———~<+e-___. The recent victory of Gen. Stewart, near Ghbuzni, in Afghanistan, s shown by late re- ports to have been a terribie slaughter of the Afghans. The British soldiers were determined avenge the murder of Major Cavignari, as it Was understood that the Afghan forces they were going to fight were among those who par- Ucipated In the assault upon the British em- Dassy last year and the butchery of its occu- pants. Actuated by this feeling ihe forces of Gen. Stewart fought desperately, killing and Wounding 2,00) Afghans. Stewart's loss was only 17 killed and 126 wounded. ———~--—_____ The Gladstone ministry is universally pro- nounced a strong one, and in its formation the new Premier has displayed good judgment. He has called around him the ablest men of the iberal party, regardless of the fact that several Of those chosen by him do not entirely agree with Lim in his ylews of party policy. His Policy, no doubt, is to weld together the ele- Ments of the liberal party more firmly than ever, and his past achievements give assurance Of Success. He {5 now in his seventy-first year, @nd in the course of nature, must retire from Party management before many years. He means to leave his party so compact and united that his retirement will not tuterfere with its Continued success. ‘The telegraph brings information that the in- ‘Vasion of the Ute reservation by restless and adventurous whites has been inaugurated. The invaders are mainly from Colorado, and tn order to show that they are determined they have issued a proclamation declaring they will not be driven from the lands they havet Aken posses- sion of. Their motto ts that theearth was given to man to “subdue,” and they Intend to begin by subduing the rights of other men. It 1s now epparent that the settlement of the Ute ques- tion has been too long delayed, aud that serious Complications may arise in consequence, ‘The national finances are in a healthy state, {nd daily growing more robust.
