gp THE EVENING STAR. I= " ICE!tt DOUBLE SHEET. WASHINGTON, SATURDAY April 24, 1880. "_ CROSRY 8. | S. NOYES.... Editor. Dublished in oF all the other datiy pagers here added to- gether. The Circulation of Newspapers. Hi. P. Hubbard, the well-known New Englarad advertising agent, has just published a haad- fome volume of 461 pages. a3 a --Right hard Kecord and Newspaper Directory,” giving tu alphabetical order, towns In each state with populat'on; newspapers in each town with cir- culation, with blank space for recording con- tracts, estimates, offera, acceptances. or any other data. It not only includes the Untied States, but all foreign countries. In the United States and Canada there are 599 dalltes and 8,428 Weeklies, tri-weeklies and serai-weeklies, The total circulation of a single issue of these Teaches 20,677,538 coples. This record shows most conclustveiy that THE Stak not only has very nearly the largest circulation of any paper Of its class In the United States, but very much the largest in proportion to population of any city in the world. In San Francisco the lead- ing evening paper claims a circulation of 10,500 ta a population of 310,000. In Boston, with a Population of 560,000 and many thousands more inthe adjacent cities and towas, the leading evening paper claims but 10,400. There are various evening editions of the morning paper3 there which have a larger circulation than the evening papers. In New York, with a popula- Uon of 1,000,000, the Plegram ts placed at 40,060. In Brooklyn, witn a popalation of 454,416, the Eagle, the leading evening paper, is put down at 20.000, In Philadelphia, with a Population of 900,0e0, there is not an evening paper named as exceeding the circulation of ‘THE Stax, though we believe our namesake there, a penny paper, is under-estimated: but ever doubling that estimate, it st" fais to cover the same teld in proportion to popula- ton. The population of Wasbingion ts named at 140,608, and the circulation of Tae Sraa is put down at 17,000, ‘This is under rather than over, as in the case of most estimates, for the eireulation of many months past has been in the neighborhood of 20,906 copies, equal to over 50,000 readers for even one day’s issue. 2,008 DRUGGISTS Hare Signed the following Endorsement, the Signatures of which are open for In- spection, and canbe seenat 21 Platt Street, New York. GENTLEMEN “*FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS WE HAVE BOLD VARIOUS BRANDS OF POROUS PLAs- TERS. PHYSICIANS AND THE PUBLIC PRE- FEB BENSON'S CAPCINE PLASTER3 TO ALL OTHERS. LADIES RIDING HABITS to order. ap2 — If the unexpected publication of Delegate ‘Downey's unrecited poem in the C Jongressional Record should ultimately have the effect of Aeceping out of its columns the remarks of Con- ssressmen that never were made, and of prin‘- ‘ng those that were exactly as they were ut tered, it would be worth more to the country than any speech that gentleman could deliver, if he gave his whole mind to tt for forty year:, it is bad enough that the public should pay for the printing of all the dreary stuff that Is actu- ally spoken tn the two houses; but when it Comes to allowing the honorable gentlemen to Strike out what they think woulda’t look well in print, or so much of their remarks as might tajure them with a portion of their constitu- eney, and to substitute therefor things they never sald or thought of, but which they after- wards think would have been a good thing it they had thought of it at the time, the so-called record becomes a ridiculous travesty, and a very expensive one, too. But, even if its privileges were not abused, as they now are nearly every day, the whole thing needs to be reformed. The publication of the proceedings of the two Houses ought to be limited to the hard dry facts of legislation, — to the giving of a faithful account of what was Teally done, a record of the votes taken, anda bare statement of the circumstance taat Mr. Soandso made remarks opposing or favoring a Particular measure. But all the windy speeches, whether deliverea as an argument on the floor or for political effect at home should be merct- lessly omitted. Then ff any honorable and am- bitlous gentleman wished to see his literary per- formance in print let him have it published in pamphlet form, at his own expense, or in his home newspaper for nothing, if he can beat its publisher out of the value of his space and labor. There ts no good reason why thls sort of rubbish should be printed at the expense of the tax payers of the country. The mere fact thata fellow gets elected to Congress gives him no claim on the public for his personal expenses Of nearly every kind, as many of them now scem to think it does = ——$—$_— ——_--. ‘The sequel to the assault last year upon Kal- loch, then candidate for mayor of Sin Francis- 0, by De Young, of the Crroniie, has been written in blood, and that city is once more in a tumult of excitement. The public condem- nation which was visited upon De Young, eause of his assault. will now be turned with ten-fold force upon young Kalloch, and his father cannot escape a Share of the odium. Had n his father was shot down, y followed the would-be assassin and fired the fatal shot of yesterday, he would have been guilty of murder, but the public would ‘have made due allowance for the provocation. “HIS Is now guilty of ueliberate, cold-blooded a: Sassination, apparently, and it may be that the Serks of tragedies growing out of this affair will not bi In the present excited stave of pubti relatives or friends of the murdered De Young may undertake to avens- him. For upwards of a year public sent/rent im San Francisco has been under a continual Strain. The ravings of Kearney inflamed bis deluded followers and rendered tndgnant the better classes of citizens. For a long time local d@isturban olence were threatened, and just as the law-abiding and order-loving citizens had restored quiet, thisman Kalloch commits a deed of blood which will excite the peop'e once more A dispat from a reliable souree, st2 aving fully established his supremacy tn New York, will, at the proper time, withdraw as a candidate bo fore the national convention. In the opinton of Mr. Tilden’s friends his choic2 as a candidate is Hon. Henry & he. of Oto, It will be seen that the monument comnitts and members fona! committ> ae tha Inspected t nof the Washtas- ton monum: were unanimous in the opinion that the monument should be com- Dieted speedily without any matertal change from the original plan. Tne people of the cyuntry who are tired of resting under the re- proach of tt Btlotshed monument to htm who i verbaliy “first in the S$ of his country- men,” wi'l heartily eats Iusion. Queen Victorta, after resisting the popular demand for Gladstone as the head of the new government, made a virtue of necessity and summoned him tn her most gracious manue~. She even included Mr. Gladstone's wife and daughter tn her invitation to the liberal leader to visit Windsor Castle. The (Queen, perhap: did not understand the force of the popul. desire for Gladstone until she attempted to combat it. In yielding so gracefully to the wishes of a majority of her subjects she ha3 given another evidence of her practical judg- ment upon matters of state interests. ———— The Courier-Journe ts exceedingly bappy over the apparert risein Tilden stock. It has Placed the following at the head of {ts columns @3 & Sort of condensed democratic platform: “New York gives the issue. The issue is Ti!- Gen. Itisa hostage to the democratic party of the United States. It ts distinct!y not a threat Taatisall” This ts not very intelligible, but it is plain that the democratic party of the United States would rather take Tilden as a “hostage” han as a presidential candidate. ——$_—__o-___—. ‘The Richmond S/ate, one of the brightest and ; ranted for three years. none AL.
