Charles De Young Shot and. Killed by Isaac M, ‘ Kalloch, The Latter the Son of the Man Whom Do Young Tried to Kill. Last Evening the Time, and the Chronicle Office the Scene. The Affair an Outgrowth of Last Summer's Bloody En. counter, When Kalloch Senior Was Almost Murderod by Charles | De Young. Intense Excitement Created in San Francisco by the Tragedy. Bpectat Dispatch to The Chicago Tribune, San Francisco, Cal., April 23—Tho feud between the De Youngs and tho Kallochs, which so nearly resulted In the death \of one. of tho adversaries on the 23d of last August, —of Kalloch sentor by two bullets fired by Charles De Young, and of De Young him- self at the hands of an infuriated mob of the adherents of the wounded man,—this evening culininated in .a real tragedy, Charles De Young being shot and killed in the Chronicle office by L. M. Kalluch, son. of the Mayor of San Francisco. Tho shooting took place at half past 7 o'clock to-night, De, Young being almost Instantly killed, TUE CAUSE. It was justscven months ago to-day that tho bitter campaign in San Francisco cut- minated in an attempted murdor, a tragedy which was the sensation of the hour in ‘Frisco and created excitement and intense Interest all over the country. As tho present 3 7 ape ily Between ; affatr was 6o. intlinately connected “with the - shooting of Inst summer a bricf recapitula- tion will be of service to rofresh the memory and assist ina proper understanding of the merits of the case. . The political campaign in the summer of 1870 was conducted with unusual virulence. ‘The workingmen’s cand!date was the Rev. I. 8. Kalloch, who had had a somewhat mot- tled and checkered career in Boston and Kansas. Heniing the opposition was CHARLES DE YOUNG, oncof thetwo brothers who edit andown © tho San Francisco Chronicle, After Kal- loch’s nomination for Mayor by the working. men, Charles De Young, in a speech at the Stuto Convention of “ Tonorable Bilks,” an- nounced that he would compel Kalloch's withdrawal from the contest. Subse- quently he notified Kalloch that © untess he withdrew he would rake up his unsavory record in tho columns of tho Chrontcle. Kalloch sont back word DEFYING HMM, and intimating that he could tell worse things Bhowt the De Youngs than they could about hin, Accordingly the De Youngs took up tha gauntlet, and In tho issue of Wednesday, Aug. 20, the Chronicle opened firo with a long article reviewing Kalloch’s career In Boston and Kansas. ‘This article charged him with having been engaged In numerous amours and scandalous scrapes since ho was years old, He was charged with drinking while in the pulpit, and was connected with innumerable swindles and scandals, both in the Eustand in Kansas, whither ho afters wards removed. The article CREATED GREAT EXCITEMENT, and was followed the two succeeding days by still more virulent aud personal attacks, Friday night, Aug, 23, Katloch had adver tisod a miass-incoting at the Metropolitan Tem ple, at which it was given out that he would read on article published flve years previous in an obscure paper called tho Sun, written by one 3. FP. Napthaly. This article was a per sonal attack on the De Youngs and on the reputation of thelr mother, which had pro: voked a vain attempt to kill Napthaly by tha De Youngs at tho time, De Young sent word to Kalloch that, if he read the article, he WOULD IE SHOT ON BIGHT, ‘The mecting camo off as advertised, except that Kalloch did not read tho article, but con: tented himself with o merciless attack on tho family record of the Do Youngs. He said that he had the article In his pocket, and that {t would bo published-and commented on within a few days, : Do Young evidently considered the pro- ceedings of the evoningns equal provocation to the reading of the article, and acted accord: ingly, ‘Tho following day, which was Satur- day, the 2d, Charlos De Young drove in a coupétothe sidy entrance of Metropolitan ‘Temple, and sont a messenger to tell Kalloch that somo one wished to seo him, As Kalloch came toward the coups De Young FIRED TWICE, ~ and Kalloch full, shot In the breast and in tho thigh, A crowd immedlately seized De Young’s carringe and upset it, He was kicked and brulsed, and would undoubtedly have been stamped to death on the spot- had not » large body of police come suddenly to i the rescue and hurried hin to fall, Tho result was, of course, Intense excite ment on tho part of tho workingmen ang the calling outof the police and milltary. The imob was preparing to : SACK ‘THE CHHONICLE OFFIOE ee, and lynch the De Youngs when It was pact fled by the announcement that Katlooh was Improving and In no immediate danger. At that time Kalloch’s son was prominent as one of the leaders of the mob, Ho made an incendiary speech at the Sand-Lots, where he was received with tumultyous cheers, He assalled De Young tn terms no less out spoken than those used by bis father, and y = appealed to the crowd, ln caso De Xoune ,
