He was surprised when he heard of the arrest, because he re- membered that Smothers was in the store that night with Jones, the latter having come in first; thinks that it was about 64 o'clock; they were talking about Smothers having been dis- eee that day; never heard anything against Smothers. Cross-examined—Had heard people say that Smothers was a bad man after women. A Proposed Duel With Broadswords. A LADY IN WASHINGTON THE CAUSE OF IT. A Philadelphia Record spectal from Pittsvurg, April 14, says: Two Philadelphia gentiemen of French extwaction were in this city last night with their friends, and left to-day for Canada, It is alleged, to Nght a duel with broadswords. ‘As the reporters get the story, several days ago Mr. Harry Joel Valden, of Philadelphia, a younc French gentleman, who is very wealthy and has yetired from business, saw a lady in a hotel in ‘Washington whom he thought he recognized as an acquaintance. Hespoke to her, and she said she did not know him, and thonght he wished to insult her. Mr. Martin T. Vanwerth, also a wealthy man, 9 lives in Philade!phia, took the matter up in behalf of the ledy and told Valden he had insulted her. Valden said he thought he knew her. Vanwerth answered that Valdea was a liar, and hot words were ex- anged. A challenge was sent by Vaiden and pled by Vanwerth, and it was agreed that they should fight in Canada.
