VY eecad & rj , : Md F “THEEVENINGSTAR | ccc cn oO THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. ... April 16, 1880. “~ eResBy S. NOYES... Editor. I fhe Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than doxble that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal tothat of alt the other daily papers here added to- gether. ‘TRE Stan is connected with the wires of the Na. ional Teleyhone Exchange and with the Western Union Teleyhone Exchange. Both these agencies oan therefore be availed of in sending to Tae Stam Sdvertisements, orders for the paper to be served, news, or any information, at any hour of the day free of charwe. These facilities are a great conve- nience, and will be sppreciated by the customers of Tar Stas. The Double Sheet To-morrow. Tue Stax will appear to-morrow as usual in double-sheet or eight-page form of tity-six columns. Advertisers will please send In their Orders as early as practicable for the enlarged and extra edition. The number of new adver- tisements published in April thus far Is 1002. ————<+e —___ An Evil For Gladstone to Tackic. In spite of the efforts to cry down and be- Uttle the land-reform movement tn the English Kingdom, it seems to have taken a deep hold upon popular attention. The crop fallures for two years fast and consequent hard times, augmented by commercial depression, have forced this question upon the attention of people and given the movement an impetus that promises well for tts success. The great- est evil in conpection with the land question in Great Britain is the custom of entailing prop- erty and imposing upon it heavy payments for an indefinite number ot years in marriage settlements. The law of Primogeniture is another feature that is complained of, and the reformers mean to con- tend for its repeal. In default of a last will and testament the law makes the eldest born heir to everything. It is urged that a repeal of this law would speedily destroy the custom of devising tothe eldest born, and tnstead some equitable mode of distribution to all the child- ren wouli grow up. Marriage settlements and deeds of entail also encumber lan Britain and prevent owners from disposing of it as they would like to. Deeds of entail fre- quently operate so as to render large estates ‘$s, almost. The holder of a lite-interest disposes of it to the best advantage he can, and then his creditors endeavor to obtaln the best : out of the property. In such cases the tillers of the land are left without any security or protection whatever, and the resuit is they endeavor to get as much out of the soil as possible without any outlay, and the Property goes to ruin. Were it not for the en- tall in very many cases the property would be Sold and probably some of it pass into the ownership of those who cultivate the soll. The object of the land reformers Is to remove these legal obstacles to the sale of land in “at Brit- ain and thus open the way to the ownership of the soll by those who till it. The advocates of the old system have been able, in the past, to check the reform movement by denouncing it as an Irish scheme, but this sort of argument is becoming stale. The need for some reform of the land-holding evils both in Ireland and Eng. land ts so imperative that the new liberal gov- ernment will doubtless feel it Incambent upon them to make this matter aleadiug measure of their administration. —_-<ce-___ Although the Massachusetts republican con- vention did not instruct for Edmunds it ex- Pressed its preference for him tn so decided a manner as to leave no doubt upon the country or in the minds of the delegates to Chicago. But in the event that Senator Edmunds shouid decline to be a candidate before the Chicago convention, then how would the Massachusetts delegation vote? That ts the interesting ques- tion now. It has been asserted positively, Within the past few days, too, that Mr. Ed- munds was not a candidate, and would not per- Tait the use of his name at Chicago. The New York Tribune made this announcement without reservation or qualification, and other journals have repeated it. The unpleasantness existing for some time between Senator Blaine and Prominent republican politiclans in Massachu- Setts is still existing, manifestly, in a way to render it unlikely that he would get much sup- Port from the delegation at Chicago, even with Mr. Edmunds out of the way. Looking the ground over, the probailitles are that Secretary Sherman would fall heir to a considerable por- tion of the Edmunds strengttf should the latter retire. The Sherman sentiment was the strong- €st in Boston, and all over the state evidences were given, in the election of delegates to the state convention, that he would be an accepta- bie candidate to Massachusetts. —————— The fall of a female trapeze performer while going through her daring feats at a circus ia Philadelphia, the other day, has raised a cry in that city for the passage of a law to prohibit Such performances. But this feeling will soon die out. It isthe danger that constitutes the attractiveness in performances of this charac- ter. The greater the risk run the more people Will go to see it, and the performers understand this. Therefore they vie with each other in de- vising feats that will put their lives in jeopardy. ‘The people who witnessed the fall of the girl tn Philadelphia, and saw her lying mangled and bleeding under the trapeze, were horrified; but if she recovers, the very fact of the accident Will render her more attractive than ever, aud thousands will go to see her in the dread expec tation of witnessing another fall. Notwithstanding the large immigration, in excess of former years, the arrivals are not sufficient to supply the demand for laborg ‘all kinds. The superintendent of Castle den has on file hundreds of appiteations trom all parts of the union for mechanics, skilled laborers, farm laborers and house servants, which he is unable to fill. Pennsylvania and Virginia want coal and tron miners. The west Wants farm laborers, tron-workers and servant girls. The south calls for different kinds of belp, and New York and the east want skilled laborers and factory employés. There are num- Derless applications for help in which the offer to pay the fareof the employed and give them good wages ts made. The fact of this demand for labor going abroad will tend to swell the already increasing tude of immtz: Se Another demoer tic quarrel has brok1 New York. “Boss* McLaughlin, of Beooklyn, and Editor Kinsella, of the Egil, are at it ham _ mer and tongs, or rather tongues. The other Warring factions can stand awhile and be amused at the new fight. ———<—<02 -___ THE WEESLY Stak, now ready, contains all the News of the Week, home and foreign; the trial of Tom Smothers for outraging Lena Leins: the West Point Mystery; Congressional Proceed- Bs np stent Investigation; Political Affairs; ite Ponuaee or Department News; Local Items; Proceedings of the Courts: Household and Re- lous Notes; Choice Stories; Poems and etches: cultural and Household Matters. It is well known that catting down the trees in a timbered region lessens the amount of rainfall in that recion. And it is a settled fact that civiliza- Hon changes the climate in many localities. The body, as well as nature, is undergoing an entire change, and requires special care. Disease geeks to enter the system in every part. Watch it! here's no portion of the body whieh so readily takes cold, or is so frequentlly diseased, as the kid- neys.
