THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. THURSDAY -...-..- April 15, L880. CROSBY 8S. NOYES... Editor. than douhie that of any other daily published in Washington, and equa! tot of all the other datly payers here added to ‘The Double Sheet on Saturday. ‘THE Stax will appear on Saturday as usual in double-sheet or eight page form of fifty-six columns. Advertisers will please send in their orders as early a8 practicable for the enlarged and extra edition. The number of new adver- tisements published tn April thus far is 9135 ——————~<e-___ ‘The Political Situation in the South. The Grant managers are, apparently, earn- estly impressed with the conviction that thelr candidate could not be defeated before the peo- ple. While they recognize the existence of a violent republican opposition to the nomination of Grant, they insist that it !s too weak to pre- Vent hiselection, and the publicis being favored, at last, with the calculations upon which the certain success of the Grant movement at the Polls ts based. These calculations will not be likely to inspire the entire republlean party With the coffidence felt by the Grant leaders, or to paralyze the democracy with fear, but as they furnish the main spring of a prominent poiltteal movement, it Is a matter of interest to study and examine them. It has been evident for some time past that Gen. Grant's friends rely upon his ability, as a candidate for President, to capture some electoral votes from the demo- erats. The assertion that he would receive a large democratic support—which no other re- Publicaz could command—has been made Prominent in the canvass fn his behalf, but It is only of late that the Grant organs and mana- gers have begun to particularize and to specify what portion of the democratic column the General could break into. In the first place, Virginia is put down as a former democratic state that can “certainly” be carried by Grant. ‘The readjusters are declared to be in sympathy with the-third-term proposition and willing tosupport It at the polls, “but they have not sut- ficlent confidence in the fair-mtndedness of any other republican candidate to work their old party assoctates for his election, S a leading Grant paper. It may be that the third-term leaders have authentic Information as to what the Virginia readjusters are willing to do, but the bosses of that party have repeat- edly denied the report that they were endeavor- ing to lead their followers into the support of Grant. Notwithstanding this dental, however, there is some reason to belleve that certain of the readjuster leaders are inclined to support Gen. Grant if they can obtain, in advat surances that their support will be re with federal patronage in the event of Grant's election. The third-termers also maintain that Grant would cet a number of electoral Votes out of the states of Loutsiana, Florida, North Carolina and Georgia, and perhaps carry allof them. They argue that the kindly man- ner in which Gen. Grant has been received and treated in all the southernfeities he has visited indicates the existence of a feeling of positive preference for him over any other man for President; that the belief in Gen. Grant’s supe- rior ability to restore harmony between the sec- tions and build up closer polit and business Felations between the north and the south, has taken a wide hold upon the southern mind, and thousands of democrats who are tired of sec- tional quarrels will vote for him. It will, no doubt, be found, when the ballots are counted ext November, that Gen. Grant's visit to the south made him but few votes in that section. ‘The public-spirited citizens in the cities he vis- ited entertained him, it is true, in the style of an honored guest, but the very men who led In dispensing this hospitality were, tn nearly all cases, prominent and active democrats, mai of them holding office from that party or ide! Ufied with its working machinery. The recently Published interviews with a large number of leading southern Congressmen demonstrate that Mr. Tilden is very unpopular with the democrats of that section, and as against him Gen. Grant might carry one, two, or possibly three of the states, because of democratic apathy and indifference. But is there any rea- ‘son to believe that Senator Blatne. or Secretary Sherman, or any other prominent republican Ukely to be nominated at (hieago could not do asmuch? Should any of the southern states go Yepublican, it is generally admitted that the result will be brought about by democratic in- difference, and not because of any newly awakened love for republican principles. ——__o-_____ People who are thinking of going into the mining business, either as investors of money or handlers of a pick and shovel, would do well to look into the facts and figures of the subject a little before doing so. Mr. Delmar, formerly in charge of the bureau of statistics here, has recently published some interesting facts in re- Jation to the cost and returns of gold and silver mining. According to his estimates, the cost of mining gold in California, from 1545 to 1856 (in value of capital and labor employed), amounted to $2,255,750,000, while the mint value Of the actual product of gold for the same pe- Tiod was only $450,000,000, so that the gold pro- duced cost about five times as much as its real value. mining produces no better results, according to the same authority, notwithstand- ing the great productiveness for a while of the famous Comstock lode in Nevada. Mr. Delmar does not rank, we think, with the highest order of statisticians, elther in regard to hi3 caleula- Uons or the conclusions drawn from them, but it is safe to assume that he is not far out of the Way in this instance. There is at any rate a good deal of collateral evidence in support of his view, and it is belleved that ac compari son of say twenty years’ transactions of the San Francisco stock board, which would cor- rectly show the tnvestments, commissions and assessments on the one hand and the dividends On the other would fully bear out Mr. Delmar’s estimates, if indeed they did not make a much Worse showing. ——_-+e-—____ Political influence is powerful, ¢ possessor of it has come in conta after the with the law. It hassaved Mr. Kemble, of Penusylva- mia, the annoyance and disgrace that are ‘usually imposed upon a convicted criminal. He absented himself without even asking permis- sion of the court, and though his whereabouts Were known he was not disturbed at all. No effort was made to bring him back, and when he did return the court did not feel called upon to administer any reproof. A new bond was entered into and ihe prisoner allowed to go his Way. The course p irsued towards Kemble and his associates has ¢ ised a very general im- Dression that they will not be made to suffer any severe penalty. The same political intlu- ence which has done so much for them will probably be powerful enough to let them off easily. The rowing match between Hanlan and Courtney for the world’s champloashtp ts to take place at Washington, according to a’tele- graphic announcement from Rochester, N. Y. ‘The parties interested agreed that all the re- quirements of a great contest like this could be had here, and they have made a fortunate se- lection. They will have a fine course and can rely upon full protection trom interference of any kind and upon fair and honorable treat- ment all round. No boats will be cut here, and more people will witness the race than could have been assembled, perhaps, at any other Point. ‘The “elastic plan of journalism” invented and adopted by the proprietor of the Chicago Times, which the telegraph took the pairs to announce to the world some time ago, seems to work very Well for the paper, but not so well for its sub- Sertbers. So far as we have observed the elasticity” in the case operates always in the direction of contraction, and never towards ex- pansion. This result 1s doubtless what the in- Yentor of the plan intended, but it is hardly Wax the public expected. ————_--_____ From all accounts the late cold snap ha played havoc with the fruit prospects of this year. “Up to that time there was every promise of an abundant yield of all kinds of fruits, but the tender buds were nipped by the frost, and it 1s said comparatively few of them survive. No section of the Was spared from the killing visitation, ‘the failure of ‘the crop, from present 23, Seems to be etapa, = ESSONS IN EENSINGTORN mers NEEDLE- WORK.
