NOYES Editor. fhe Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal tothat Of all the other daily payers here added to- oether. SS ———— New Advertisements in April. ‘The number of new advertisements In THe Svar for the six publication days of the present month reaches 340, an average 01 90 for each day. Advertisers will confera favor by send- Ing in their orders as. early as possible for Sat- urday’s eight-page paper, to insure insertion nd classification. ———<——$ The Tammany democrats of New York credit the report of Tilden’s intended withdrawal trom the presidential race and they are correspond- ingly happy. The New York Sar, John Kel- ly’s organ, maintains that the report Is “true in fact, true in detail of disvussion and true i declaration of result.” Ex-Con- gressman Abram Hewitt, who, in the campaign of 1576 was as any man says that while he does not know any- thing about Tilden’s intentions he does not be- Ueve the story of his proposed withdrawal. Mayor Cooper does not credit it, and Tiden himself refused to be interviewed. It may be hac the story was started to aid the anti- Tildenites in their fight to get control of the coming state convention. One of the most Prominent of all the democratic ( from the east, a man who is alway formed in regard to party matters, and whose relations have been and are friendly with Til- den, says of the reported — withdraw “1 think ft is a fetnt, st&rted to mis- lead, but It is true that Mr. Tilden will not be a candidate before the Cincinnati conven- Yon. He knows that he could not be elected. It istrue, too, that the way Is paved for democra- tie reconciliation and harmony In New York, but it will not be accomplished at the coming state convention.” Meantime county conven- tions in New York are being induced to instract delegations to the state convention for Tilden, and that does not look as if he had yet made up his mind to back out. ee ‘The interviews recently published in the New York Herald with the democratte members of Congress from Virginia, Loutslana and Missis- sippi are generally accepted as conclusive proot that Tilden could not, as the democratte prest- dential nominee, carry the sold south. The Congressmen from the three states named unan- imously protested against. the renomtnation of ‘Tilden, and with but two or three exceptions they said it would cost the democracy th States to nominate him. In the f: of su powerful democratic opposition and of such tes- tmony of his weakness Tilden continues to urge his fight for control of the New York conven- tion, ostensibly with the view of contending for the nomination at Cimeinnatl. In pursuing this course Tilden is puzzling the politicians and har- rassing his own party. “What does he mean? is the question that is betng frequently asked and never satisfactorily answered. The most reasonabie and plausible explanation of Tliden’s Course is that he is seeking to dictate the nom- ination of bis party, and thereby make himself the power behind the throne in theevent of the election of his man. It will cost him money, time and trouble to control the coming New York convention, and, therefore, he must ex- pect to gain something by it. He is not given to expending money without the expectation of Some future return. He, apparently, means to ‘show his party that it shall not crowd him off the track unceremoniously. ——_—_—_—_--___ ‘The large profit ylelded by the cotton crop last year bas stimulated a desire to increase the pro- duction, and it ts estimated, from preparations being made, tnat the acreage planted this year will be, at least, fifty percent more than that of Jast year. Statistics of the last crop show that it cost 5% cents per pound to ralse the cotton, and the planters recelved for it an average price of 114 cents, thus realizing a clear profit of 53 cents per pound. The total crop Is estimated at five milion bales, of 450 pounds each— 2,250,000,000 pounds. This, at the estimated Profit, has put into the pockets of the southern Planters the neat sum of $124,000,000 net gain The high price commanded by wheat has had the same Influence upon the sections of country favorable to its production. A much larger area has been sown; according to some estimates double that of last year. The planters and farmers may, in their eagerness to make more money, overdo the thing, and such large crops of cotton and wheat on the market this Year as to reduce the price. The price of wheat ‘was kept up by the foreign demand for it, but the crops in Europe may not fail again this year. jose to Mr. Tilden a3 ee Judge Field, of the U.S. Supreme Court, in &@ letter published in California, says he has always regarded Chinese immigration in large pumbers as a serious evil and likely to cause great injury to the morals of our people, as Well as to their industrial interests. He thinks that while the United States cannot perempto- Tily abrogate its treaty with China, we can give notice of a desire to modify it or mike a new treaty. This declaration of the Jwige is cal- culated to assist his friends tn Calfforaia who are endeavoring to make him the democratic candidate for the presidency. Because of a de- cision ke once rendered.there was a feeling that he was not sound on the Chinese question from the California standpoint. His letter places him in harmony with his party tn that state on this, to them, important question, and removes the only objection that has been urged, in that state, to his nomination for Pres ‘The democratic census supervisor of Delaware has, inthe appointment of enumeraiors, set a non-partisan example tha’ the supervisors of other Should follow if they desire to in- Spire public confidenca in thelr work. General Schofield apparently inciines to this opinion. He ts positive that none of the other cadets will be implicated, axd he also punctures the report set afloat that the assault upon Whittaker was committed by southern Cadets. As the Spring season approaches, and a change of Apparel becomes necessary, the question arises as to where the handeomest selectioa of SEASONABLE CLOTHING can be seen, and where prices are the least affected by the recent advance in Woolen Mate- nials. It is hardly needful! to speak of the founda- tion for the rise in Woolen Goods. The fact of the raw material advancing in price from 36 cents per Ib. one year ago to 53 cents per Ib. to-day, makes it clearly apparent to all that goods bought by dealers during the past few months MUST be sold at a very considerable increase over last year’s prices. It was our xood fortune to make selections for this Spring and Summer so early that the increased prices which are demanded by others in our line of trade need not be asked by us, and in opening our new establishment in this city we have determined to offer our elegant assortment, embracing all the Latest Novelties of the Season, at the lowest rates prevailing at any time during last year. Every arti- cle will be found marked in PLAIN FIGURES, with the BOTTOM PRICE, which we guarantee to be lower than any house in the city will sell the same quality of goods. An examination is invited, which we think will convince the most credulous that we are speaking facts. —. STROUSE & CO., PROPRIETORS OF THE “FAMOUS. No. 400 Seventh st. n.w., CORNER D.
