SAD FATE OF A MARYLAND WOMAN. The death of a lady about 3 Sold, bat appearing much younger, under very pecullar circumstances, at house No. 114 B street north- west, on Suns morning last, is the subject of considerable gossip and comment on the streets today. Itappears that aman named Simpkin, & clerk in the Treasury department, went to this house—kept by an old woman called Ann Morgan, but whose right name {s sald to be Ann Page—a week or two ago, and engaged a room for a lady friend of his, who he stated was ex- Dected from Maryland that day. The lady came With him on the same day, and for several days afterwards went cut, In apparently good health, retting her meals at some other place. On the onday following her arrival she went out as usual, returning in about an hour, and com- plained of being stck. Her friend, Mr. Simpkin, called, and was yery attentive, and, as she go. no beiter, he called tn Dr. Townshend, who, after visiting her, called in Drs Stanton and Murphy as consulting physicians, The lady "W worse all the time, and died Sunday morn- ing last. Before her death she stated that she bad been attended by a gray-bearded doctor, somewhere hear the city hall. ‘The matter has been Kept very quiet pending ‘¢myestigation, but our reporters have the follow- ing statements on good authority. Last fall an advertisement fora housekeeper appeared in a eity paper here. It was answered among others by the above mentioned lady, a very handsome woman, who came from her home in Maryland for the pu: e. On her arrival here she found that the ai iser, sald to be Mr. Simpkin, was not a householder, but occupied two rented roowis in a house, She, however, engaged with him as his housekeeper, and was with him a month or two, until about the end of November. She then went into service ina dining-room in this city for a short time and then returned to her Marylandhome. A short time ago, probably finding that her condition would be discovered by her family if she remained at home, she Wrote to Simpkin to get her_a place here.’ He then seems to have secured her the quarters at Mrs. Morgans’ (or Page's). The doctors called in aiter she became Ill Were reticent; but we can state that the result ¢f the post mortem dis- closed a case of most brutal malpractice for abortion by an unknown physician who had punctured the bladder and caused inflammation and an agonizing death. ‘The unfortunate woman Is cnown to be very respectably connected, and has two brothers in this city well-known business men, who are lunged into the greatest distress at the shock- ing fate of their sister. She is said to have stated while on her death bed, that Simpkin Was not the author of her misfortune. As stated above, there 1s a ctisposiifon to con- feal the facts. It is even said by a Mrs. Whalen or Whaley, who lives in Mrs. Ann Morgan’s jhouse, Dr. Townshend told Mrs. Morgan that there was nothing wrong in the case—that the girl's death was caused from Bright's disease ot the kidneys. It hardly seems possible that he should have made such a statement. The body was removed Sunday afternoon to the establishment of Mr. Buchly, the under- | taker, by order of Mr. Simpkin, and Coroner A FATAL SHOT IN THE FOREHEAD. | a-Weung Colored Man Killed by a White Man. ARREST OP THE MAN CHARGED WITH THE SHOOTING. Last night, about 93; o'clock, James E. John- son, a young colored man residing on Samson Street, Between 14th and 15th streets, was shot and fataily wounded (his death Socurring, about 1g hours afterward) on 14th etreet, above P street, azew yards from the store of the late George Philip Hirth, who was killed on the 7th of January Jast, and for whose murder Bedford, Queenan, and Pinn are now under sentence of jeath. Jonnson is represented te have been an | honest and industrious young man. OMicer Hollinan, of the sixth precinct, was standing at the corner of ith and N streets, about 4 oclock p. m, and hearing the report Of a pistol ran ‘to the pot from whence the sound proceeeded, when he Saw quite a crowd of people gathered about the body of Jobnson as it lay Bi on the pavement with a pistol shot wound in the forchead. Ascertaining where the wounded man lived, the officer, with assistance, took him | to bis residence, 1424 Samson street, between P and Q and iéth and 15th streets, end Drs. Bigelow, Ramsay and Blair wer. called in, but coud do nothing to save his life, for he died about 11 o’elock. The police of the sixth precinct, as also the second precinct, in which the shooting took place, Was at once informed and efforis were immediately taken to arrest the guilty party or parties. Acting on information Surgeant 4 Wiss and Officer Grant, of the sixth precinct, and officers Hanline and Ahern, of the second pre- cinct, arzested a man known as “Big fos! Jobnson, who, it is charged, is the guilty man. THE MURDERED MAN, Johnson, was 24 years of age. He hasa wife and one child, and was formerly employed at the grocery store of Mr. John F. Greene, at U corner of 14tk and Samson streets, but lat: at Turney’s restaurant, on 74th street and > York avenue, and has been ded heretotor + as a remarkably peaceable and industrious young man. TRE ALLEGED MURDERER, Jonn H. Johnson, a rather fite-looking young man, is well-knewa in the northern part of the city, and has borne heretofore a rather bad character, having teen engaged before in as- Sault, once of rather a disreputable character on Sergeant Amiss, a few months ago. WITNESSES JN CUSTODY. There are several stories in relation to the Occurrence, and there were a number of wit- nesses to the affair who could not be found in the early part of the night, but the police of both precincts, Lieuts. Greer, of the sixth, and Jobason, of the second precinct, and their ofti- cers, worked with so much industry on every plece of information that they could gather, that it was but a few.hours before they had in custody John Clarkson, Hackney Turney, Dick Morris and Morris Placer, white; Wm. Pobert- son, Wm. Coleman, games Waters and Wim. El- Us, colored, all of Whom, with Joseph Johnsen, Were z>tained in custody until the Inquest. THE CORONER'S INQUEST. At this point Mr. Johnson turned and asked, ‘Who are those niggers following, adding “Let’s go back.” Witness sald don’t go back; there 1s no good making a fus with anybody, and I do not think they are fol- jon tig. us,” The prisoner said “You are afraid to go back,” and called Clarkson and Finn back and started down the street a little in front of the others, Clarkson and Finn being in the rear. Forv's Orexa Hovsk.—Easter week opened most ay at Ford’s Opera House last night, with a delightful play, performed by an excellent company, The players—Abbey’s New York Park Theater Company—left Buffalo yes- terday morning, and ved here in the after- noon, but the railroad men failed to deliver their age on time, and Mr. Hopkins, their enter- ing agent, had to buy costumes here for the ladies to appear in the earlier acts, The bag- gage arrived before the close of the play, how- ever. “Fairfax” ts an interesting play. The tragical prologue throws its shadow over the succeeding four acts, but the pathos is relieved by bright comedy touches. Miss Agnes Booth proves herself an emotional actress of a high order by her fine acting as “Gladys.” Mr. Whiting’s bachelor doctor ts a delightfully fresh and breezy creation, and Mr. Knowles, Mr. Fi guson, Mr. Eberle, Mrs. Gilbert and Miss Co make up a very stropg company.
