~THE EVENING STAR. _ WASHINGTON. TUESDAY .............. ‘March 30, 1990. ———____———— CROSRY 8. NOYES....Editor. The Evening Stor, has 6 verte a mor? onto | Goer any other daily Belished by in ieee aut oa sees i Set ‘The Tilden-Kelly Feud. ‘The action of the democratic committee of ‘New York in delegating the work which it as- sembled to perform to a sub-committee, has had ‘an encouraging effect upon theant!-Tilden dem- ocrats. They construe it into an evidence of fear on the part of the Tilden men, and, In fact, this is the view that 1s untyersally adopted. It shows that Tilden {s not confident of his ability to carry the convention; that he ts afraid of the influence bis opponents may bring to bear if they are given a cbance to meet at the same time and place with the convention. The mo- tive of the regular committee In deferring the call for the convention was generally under- stood. The policy was to secure all the accom- modations of the town selected before making the date and place public, in order to prevent the Tammanyites from holding thelr con- vention at the same point and on the same day. The sub-committee was so indiscreet, though, In talking about the con- vention that John Kelly’s friends very soon ascertained that Syracuse had been virtually upon, and it ts hinted that Tammany made use of this information forthwith by notl- fying adherents in that city to be on the look- out and secure accommodations. John Kelly announces that the anti-Tilden programme will be carried out even if it becomes necessary to build a wigwam for the convention and erect tents for the accommodation of the delegates, and he {s apparently in earnest in saying this. ‘The Tilden committee have issued their call for convention at Syracuse on April 2th, and no doubt the Tammany committee’s call for the same place and date will follow immediately. It is very plain that Tilden can count upon the state committee to do his bidding to any ex- tent, but their influence will be at an end when the convention shall have organized. Then the harmonizers will begin their work, but the only basts upon which they can attain success 1s in the overthrow of Tilden. The opponents of Tilden who do not unite with Tammany are preparing to make a contest in the primary conventions. Instead of going outside the regular party organization they belleve in fighting to control it. Therefore ‘Tilden is being assailed from two quarters at the same time. There is no doubt but that ex- Governor Seymour is in sympathy with the movement fo send anti-Tilden delegates to the regular convention, and it also has the support of the Word and many other influential demo- cratic papers. This is the element that Tilden really has to fear, for if it should succeed in controlling the convention a truce would soon be patched up with Tammany, but should Tilden have a majority of the delegates he will, by that one stroke, defeat his opponents within and without the convention. Tammany’s influence would be effective united with the other anti-Til- den“democrats, but in waging a bushwhacking Night outside the party, itonly adds to the Tilden chances of success. The outlook is very favor- able to another victory, within the party, for the Gramercy statesman. The Baltimore Sun has interviews with Sena- tors Don Cameron, Conkling and Logan, and several other prominent leaders of the Grant movement, which set at rest the rumor of an intended withdrawal of the ex-President. Sen- ator Cameron reiterates his recent declaration that he “was for Grant and had no second choice,” and adds that “Grant's nomination and election are as sure as sunrise.” Senators Conkling and Logan spoke with equally as Much confidence of the success of the Grant movement, the former saying that his belief in the nomination of Gen. Grant by acclamation Or on the first ballot grew stronger every day. ‘These expressions, coming as they do from the men who seem to have control of Gen. Grant’s interests as a candidate, indicate that he willrun the race through. Nobody doubts the power of ‘Messrs. Conkling, Cameron and Logan to pro- cure his withdrawal if they deemed it wise or expedient, and therefore the declarations of these gentlemen with regard to his candidacy are received with due weight. By this it 1s not intended to imply that these three Senators have such command over the ex-President as that they can do what they please with him; but they were am ng the first to inaugurate the Grant movement, and should the canvas; as- sume a phase that in their Judgment called for his withdrawal their advice and influence would, no doubt, procure it. Scarcely more than two months intervene between now and the Chicago convention, and it 1s not very prob- able that any y great change will occur in the political situation; at least not such an one as would retire General Grant. © Another stain was put upon the reputation of Washington, last evening. by the commission of murder on 14th street, one of the most fre- quented thoroughfares in the city, and at an hour, too, when it was still thronged with peo- ple. Fortunately for the ends of justice there seems to be no doubt about the tdentity of the criminal, so that there need be no uncertainty or delay in visiting upon him an adequate pun- ishment for his crime, which, so far as now ap- pears, was wholly without justification. It may be said that it was not done tn cold blood, but this can hardly be plead as an excuse; nor must the fact that the offender in this instance Is a white man and his victim a negro be allowed to have any weight in enforcing the law. The protection of society requires that human Ife should not be held so cheaply as it seems to be im this community, and such an example should be made tn this and other cases like tt as will not only make the crime of murder less fre- quent but also tend to abolish the practice of carrying deadly weapons. Let the utmost pen- alty of the law be imposed in all cases, without regard to color, race, or and other consideration than the public welfare. ——— Out of the 15,000 men assembled at Enniscar- thy, Ireland, Sunday, but few were adherents Of Mr. Parnell. His friends were not numerous enough to protect him from the blows levelled at him and he was very roughly handled. The assault seems to have been a vigorous and un- Truly protest of the populace against dictation, ‘The Chevalier O’Clery, member of the late Par- Mament from the County Wexford, isa candi- date for re-election asa home-ruler, but he 1s not extreme enough to suit Parnell. Therefore the latter had nominated two other candidates as obstructionists. O'Clery’s principles were evidently acceptable to his constituents, how- ever, who were furloisly indignant at the at- tempt of Parnell to tn‘erfere in thelr concerns. ‘This reception of the agitator was In marked Contrast with one accorded him at the same Place just before hoe sailed for America. Then he was welcomed and listened to respectfully. ‘The conclusion {s that the Parneil agitation {3 Fetrograding instead of advancing in popu- larity. a —___-~ Sages Now it is reported that the prolfitc Edison has Made a wonderful discovery by which no end Of wealth is to be extracted from the tailings of auriferous quartz after {t has passed through the crushing mill The tnveation may be all that is claimed, but after previous experiences the pensive public will no doubt prefer to wait a bit fora verification. On the whole the sus- Pcion occurs that Edison has rather too many irons in the fire to succeed with all of them, it he does with anyof them. Oneof the big things he was going to do off-hand was to invent a mode of abating the notse-nuisance of the cle- wated railways, but he fatled utterly. A woman Invented a better contrivance for the purposa than Edison's, and hers didn’t amount to muc! h, ether. Edison knows a good deal, but he isn’t Omniscient, quite evidently. ————_—_--____ ‘The expression of satisfaction 1s general that the illness of Senator Thurman Is not of a dan- gerous nature. It fs universally felt that the Joss to the Senate and the country of a states- fman of bis high personal character and great pbility would be a serious one. —_____.s-__ General Grant’s reception in Texas has been phout as enthusiastic and as earnest as that ac- forded him in the north.
