Considerable excitement prevailed for a time on the boat, during which pisto!s were drawn by the assailants, but as soon as they had accomplished their purpose, quiet was restored. Glover, Cleary and others was decide e judgment below being ed. This was a suit ‘u equity to restrain the sale of a house and lot belonging to the Plaintiff! on a defaulted note for $2,000, which Cleary had confessed to forging her name to and selling to Messrs. Burke and Herbert. On the petition of the latter two, leave was granted by the chancellor to suppress the portion of Cleary’s testimony contatning the confession, he having absconded and the statement not being considered admissable. An answer was made by the other defendants, setting forth that the paper, as far as the record showed, was & genuine’ note, and if not so, they were janocent purchasers, without notice of its char- acter. On this, a decree dismissing the sult of Mrs. Hamilton, with costs against her, was ren- dered. An appeal was just rendered affirms that below, and the note will now be collected, with interest and costs, or the property securing It sold. THE IMPROVEMENT BOOM. New Buildings Going Up. It needs no prophet to tell that our city is destined to make a remarkable growth in the year 1880, both in the way of costly public build- ings and superb private edifices. A number of important sales of real estate have been made lately to parties who intend to build fine rest- dences this year, but who have not fully made their plans, and who are now busy consulting architects and builders. Mr. John Sherman, real estate broker, is bulld- ing a handsome three-story and basement pressed brick dwelling at the southwest corner of Connecticut avenue and Jefferson Place. The size is 27 by 31 feet. There is to be two bay win- dows on Jefferson Place and one on the side of Connecticut avenue, both outside and inside to receive ornamental finish, and with all modern. improvements. The cost’ will be $9,000. Gen. A. A. Humphreys has commenced the erection of a first class residence for his own household at the southeast corner of 15th and K streets pn. w. This peng 30_by 72 feet, three stories and basement, plain pressed brick ifont with stone trimmings and cornices. The rooms aré large and hard wood finish, and the whole plan 1S drawn more with reference to comfort and convenience than architectural display, and when finished will be a model resi- dence. ' The cost will be about $20,000, Mr. Nathan W. Fitzgerald, the well known claim agent, has just commencea excavating for a fine residence for himself on K, between 13th and 14th streets, 25 by 96 feet, three stories and basement, pressed brick front with Con- neciicut brownstone trimmings for windows, doors, and projections, and bay window extend- ing two stories high. The parlor and second story are to be finished throughout with hard wood, including the mantles. The steps and railing to the entrance are to be of stone, of the same kind as in the other trimmings. The plumbing and inside work throughout to be of a very elaborate character, and all modern im- provements. Mr. John B. Bi igs the archi- tect, and the work is tobe done by the day under a superintendent, Cost $15,000. Mr. R. I. Mr. Towson Caldwell has the plans made ard contemplates erecting the coming season a dwelling on 1sth, near M street. This is to be in the quaint Queen Anne style of architecture now being revived. It is to be 2% by 82 feet fone plan, and the papers uctuse very orna- moulded brick and browustone, with oa stone cornices. Its elevation is three stories above basement and a bay window runping up two stories, with balcony on top. N., are having erected a double house, one for each, at the intersection of Connecticut and Massachusetta avenues and Dupont Circle. This is in the Queen Anse style, two stories, basement and attic, with balconies on exch story, fronting the circle. They are to be quite ornamental. The windows segmental arc! top, 0 of stained glass and small lights. The hall in each ts to be twelve feet wide, and all the inside work of hard wood finish. Mantels are to be high, and also of wood, with old-fashioned fire-place in each room and in the halls. A large iron door separates the two houses on the main floor, so that, when desirabie, both houses may be thrown nto on, the wives of these gentlemen being C. Cady Is the architect, and Mr. Ie i. Feral the builder. They are to cost $18,000 each. Mr. M. J. Alter is having constructed four two-story dwellings on Vermont avenue and lith street no. w. These houses complete the | entire block which Mr. A. will have built. Just north of these houses, on Vermont ave- nue, Mr. D. B. Groff has just completed three handsome dwellings, and has now commenced work on three more in the same square, all of a good class and of ornamental design. The lat- ter will cost $12,000, Mr. H. L. King has now in course of construc- dwellings on 15th, near I street. These are of a good class, and will cost $8,000 each. Mr, Ed. Abner having purchased the old Sea- ton mansion property, on E, between 7th and Sth streets, has removed the old dwelling, and in constructing a large two-story 60 feet, the lower story to form one large room for a restaurant, to be used in connection with his summer garden in the rear lot. Green, in charge of street pavements, states that this street is al- most impassable in winter, and being much Used by the various branches of the District government, he recommends that it be paved with cobble stone, which recommenndation was approved by the Commissioners to-day. THE SECOND (COLORED) Baptist CHURCH TROUBLE.—Yesterday inthe Court in General ‘Term, the case of Fitzhugh, et al., against Gas- Kins, et al., was decided, the decree of the Equity Ce court dismissing the bill being affirmed. ‘The suit was brought in 1576 to restrain Gas- kins from acting as pastor or the other defend- ants from claiming title to the church property. as trustees, on the ground that Gaskins had bad character and disreputable ‘antecedents, was rot a regular ordained minister, had ar- Bro ee trust sands, etc. The defendani3 ied the charges, and on the restraining order which had been granted forbidding the defend- ants to exercise their functions having been dissolved, they broke into the church by force, changing the locks, and excluding the other portion of the congregation thet m, ard re- tained forcible possession. A cot ission was subsequently appointed to conduct an election, and on ae 29th 270 ballots were cast, all for John P. Abraham Rawls, Lafayette Jet- fries, James Brown and James T. Anderson as trustees. On September 9, 1879, a final decree was reciting this election and decreeing that the comp'ainants convey the property to them, upon the trusts set out in the original deed.’ The decree also provided that if the com- plainants siould neglect to make such convey- ance within ten days then J. J. Darlington was appointed trustee to execute said deed. The lecree recited that the complainants had re- ceived $290 peton gin to the church, directs them to pay it, wit ie costs of suit, to the new trustees, and provides that the defendants may have execution therefor as at law. ‘THE MAN WITH A LONG KNIPE.—Yesterday afternoon Officer Fowier, while walking up 20 street, between C and D’streets southeas! @ man rush from the sidewalk with a long knife in his hand toward the wagon of the Providence Hospital, which was passing at the time. The man immediately stopped the wagon and a desperate struggie ensued between himself and the driver. The officer arrived on the spot in time to prevent the man with the knife from inflicting an injury on the driver or Sister Beat- rice, who was in the wagon at the time. He was taken to the Sth precinct station-house, where he gave the name of Thomas Rooney. In the Police Court this morning be was charged with assaulting James Nelson, the driver of the n. De Smedt, chemist for the Dis- trict, has just concluded his chemical test tor ison in the stomachs of John and Mary Jane Reilly, and in his report to the coroner states that he finds an alkaloid supposed to be atro- ia, and he recommends that a toxical effect be Tied on a small living animal with a small quency from some which he has retain for that purpose. The quan- tity found in the man’s stomach and con- tents is 95-1000 of a grain, and in that of the woman 45-1000 of a grain. The tests for the presence of arsenic was vely elaborate, and the repre covers ten pages of foolscap upon that ject. The summing up shows arsenic 2 {2-100 grains in the man’s stomach and 146-1000 grains in that of the stomach and its contents of the woman.
