At elght o'clock the Sergeant-at-arms appeared at the bar of the House, having in his custody Mr, Davis (Cal.), Messrs, Bingham, Richmond, O'Reilly and Herbert. “The usual amusing scenes Were enacted ag these gentlemen gave their excuses, the favorite excuse being the de- mands of appetite. From time to time other members were brought before the bar of the House and dis- charged, without costs. The tun grew fast and furious when Mr. Steele, in presenting his ex- cuse, ascended to the clerk’s desk, and, amid great lau nd sare and a storm of humorous critl- cisms and sarcastic remarks, recited portions of Burns’ “ Tom O'Shanter,” premising his recita- tions With the remark that what he was about to quote would be as as the House was likely’ to) hear on this solemn occasion. on teele resuming his seat, Mr. Singleton inquired, whether, the prayer having been con- erage, it was not in order for the journal to be rei Mr. Gartield.—Is it agreed that we shall have a vote on the benlin proposition? Dr. Dix’s Persccutor Arrested. ‘BE 18 CAPTURED IN —— AND OONPRSSRS Eugene Fairfax Willlamson was fate Baltimore last evening. changed Tbiack, mailing and endeavoring to extort money trom the Rev. Dr. Moi L. Dix, pastor of Trinity church, New York. For about a month bast the reaidence Of Dr. Dix nas been Persons almost daily who each brought them postal cards all written In the cae wate writing and stating that Dr. Dix desired to see the bearer of the anonymous communication. The cards and their bearers finally became such an annoyance to Dr. Dix that he placed the matter in the hands of the New York authort- ties. About a week after he had notified the authorities he received an anonymous letter stating that for $1,000 the writer would cease his annoyances. Mr. Gayler, the general de- livery superintendent of the post office, then proceeded to- work up the case. One of the clergy upon whom he called had formerly been astudent at the New York Theological Semt- nary, and in his conversation with this gentle- man Mr. Gayler learned that a young man named Eugene Fairfax Williamson had, about ten years ago, been a Sunday school teacher at Dr. Cox’s church In New York. He did not do much teaching, but hung around the church and had the air of a “ne'er-do-well.” Mr. Gay- ler obtained a photograph of Wiillamson, and returning to the post oftice began an examina- tion of the index kK and otuer recoras. At last he ascertained that Wilifainson had ad- dressed a pwr card to the office on February 19 requesting that any communications for him be sent to the Wind: r hotel, New York. Tae handwriting on this card was somewhat similar to the anonymous ones that had been received by Dr. Dix and the parties who had visited hin, although appearing to be written with an effort at disgitise. THE FIRST CLUB. Mr, Gayler immediately proceeded to the Ww ‘indsor Hotel, where he found the name of K. . Williamson, of Pittsburg, registered on the Isth of February and lithof March. He had stopped at the Hotel but a couple of weeks on his February visit, and had only remained a few days on his March visit. Upon further inquiry it was learned from the cler! of the hotel that Williamson had in all probability gone to Ralti- more. Mr. Gayler then telegraphed to Chie’ Special Agent Col. D. B. Parker, {n Washington, him tn Baltimore, and on last Monday evening the two met in that city. Detectives smith, West and Lyons were empioyed to assist fu the search, and accordingly the work was ommenced. Search at the depots and express offices finally brought to light a trunk that had been shipped by Dodd's New York Transporta- Bon Company, checked to Williamson at No. 556. Pennsylvania avenue, corner Presstman street. Mr. West immediately went to the house on the avenue and found it occupied asa provision store by Mr. Heatzman, jr. Mr. West then got a Wagon, placed an empty trunk In it and drove to the house. AllghUng and entering the store he told Mr. Heatzman that be was in search of a missing trunk, and thought probably he had left it there. He represented himself to be a baggageman who had delivered a trunk at the wrong house. While in the store Mr. West saw Willlamson, but could not fully identity him with the likeness he had, which had been takea. some years ago. Mr. West then left the house and placed a man on guard outside to watch the Movements of Williamson. Yesterday atte) noon Mr. West again proceeded to Heatzman’s, and there met the suspected man for whose ai rest he carried a warrant. He then commenced to tell the latter about his trunk which he, the apparent baggageman, had lost. THR ARREST. Williamson was thrown entirely off his guard, and when asked his name gave {ft innocently. ‘The detective then told him that it was not a trunk he was looking after but Mr. Willlamson himself. ‘The latter was much surprised at this bit of information, but made no resistance. He was then placed in a carriage and driven to the middle police station, accompanied by de- tective W eke Justice Johns immediately gave the case a hearing and committed the accused for the action of the New York authorities. Mr. Gay ler telegraphed to New York to know what disposition should be made of the prisoner and received a reply to bring him to that city im- mediately. Accordingiy, in company with Messrs. West and Gayler, Williamson left for ‘New York on the 11:20 train last night. CONFESSING HIS GUILT. In a written confession witnessed by detec- tive West, Williamson admits that he was the. author of the letters and postal cards. He ar- ey vers in New York about the middie of February mained there one week. He repeated his onium March 14, and on both occasions wrote and mailed the offensive letters and cards while Bepene ‘the Windsor hotel, under the slgna- ture of E. F. Williamson, of Pittsburgh. He = not know what in heaven him neither Mr. Dix nor any of the pocons annoyed by his acts ever did him any injury. He sol- emnly declared that his intention was not t@ extort money from Dr. Dix or any one else.
