He asserted that there was not one word or letter in the testimony to support the allegations of the report. He sald when the resolutions came up he would show the American people ence proceeded ‘the hecatomb of corpses that were piled up in Colfax. and show them the origin and detatis of that massacre, and impress the trath w pon the Senate and t people. That it is the sense of this Congress that political complications and conilicts of national interests and jurisdiction Ukely to grow out of the construction of a water way across the isthmus which connects the conti- nents of North and South America are of so dangerous a character as to greatly outweigh any advan' likely to result from such a connection either to ne republic of North or South America, or to the nations of Europe, and that no interest of the people of the United States requires any such work, and therefore it is the duty of this government to discourage any undertaking so much calculated to disturb our peaceful relations with other governments, and fraught with so much peril to our future safety and well-belng.
