MONDAY ..March 22, ISSO. fect Parole was Counted Out. ial to the N. ¥. Truth trom London, ware 19,@ays: The race for the Liverpool Spring Cup, which came off at the Liverpool meeting to-day, excited constasrabls in- terest nr ale city. Parole stood well tn the betting, and the oftices of the several sporting papers in Fleet street were surrounded by eager froups of spectators anxious to ascertain the Considerable surprise was manifested the news was bulletined that Parole was the winner, and the wonder increased when a few moments afterward it_ was announced that the American horse had been disqualified. The betting on the grounds, just before the race, was 9 to 4 against Capt. Macheil’s brown geld Advance (aged); 6 to 1 against Lord Rose- four year-old bay filly, Chocalate; 7 to 1 agiinst Parole, and 10 to 1’ against the field. The race was well contested, and Parole won handily by halt a length. His’ jocky, however, had committed the error of judgment of cross ing In front of Advance within the regulation two lengths, which ts prescribed by the ruies of the turf. Jeffrey, who rode Parole, dented the charge, and was positive that there was consider- ably over two lengths between Parole and the 2d horse when the cross took piace. ‘The judges, however, decided against. him, and the race was given to Captain “Machell’s ‘Advance. There was aclear length between the second and third horse, the Duke of Montrose’s bay hors om trose. By the disqualification of Paro ! Toovis’ four-year-old Gilderoy obtained “this 1 place. The supporters of the Lorillard stabi are greatly chagrined at the unsails actory ne sult which has attended Parole’s tirst victory this season. The position of the Duke of Moi- trose’s Strathblane at the finish was a genuine surprise. The brown horse had beon generally considered out of the race, and he liad beea lumped with the rest of the’ fourteen who ran and who were not specified in the bettiag as in the fleld. His weight, however, was greatly in his favor. He carried 9 pounds, while Parole, the actually winner, was loaded down with | pounds. The London Sportsman and Beis L concur in saying that It was the general opinion in the paddock and in the ring that the Stew- ards would award the race to Parole. Both journals say there was undoubtedly foul riding, but not more than is frequently passed over without notice. The Pniladelphta Times says the thirty-sec- ond rule of racing reads as follows: ‘A horse that crosses another is disqualified ‘unless it. be proved that he was two clear lengths ahead of the other when he crossed.” ‘The necessity of the strict observance of this rule in horse rac- ing, as in rowing, 1s obvious, as, otherwise, {n a close finish, when the rider of the horse half a length or a length in front sees that his oppo- neut is gradually gaining upon him, he has only tosteerhis own mount into his rival's line of direction; the other jockey must then check his horse, or a collision would of necessity take place, and hence loses enough ground to insure the success of the man riding with his head as well as his hands. Jeffrey's reputation as a “tricky” Jockey would doubtless militate agalast Parolé in considering the complaint. Had the son of Leamtngton’s old jockey, Archer, been in the saddle, it is probable that Parole would have not only won the race, but got the stakes. PAROLE'S PROSPECTS. Parole’s running at Liverpool will draw re- newed attention to his chance of winning the City and Suburban again. It is a month before the event comes off, and as recent advices from Newmarket state that Parole Is rather backward in condition, he should strip on Epsom downs a seven-pounds better animal than he ran on Fri- day. There is no getting away from the fact that it was a great performance to co sixteen pounds to Advance and twenty- pounds to a fair three-year-old like Chocolate, and, judged by this eet ear orine wey Parole’s prospects of carrying off the greatest of the spring handicaps, (t ity and Suburban,) not- withstanding the terrific impost with which he is burdened, begin to look more rosy.
