THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. MONDAY ...............Miarch 22, 1890. CHUSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. —————————————————— Zhe Evening Star has a regular, perma~ ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that Of ali the other daily papers here added to- gether. ——_—_—_—_—_——_— ‘The Hendricks Boom. Mr. Hendricks has been formally entered in the presidential race, and whatever hisstrength im other states may be, there is no doudt of his support by the democracy of Indiana. There is no question but that the delegation from Indiana to the Cincinnati convention will be Instructed to support Hendricks “first, last and all the time,” and that these instructions will be faithfully carried out. In organizing the Hendricks club, in Washington, Saturday evening, it was announced that one of the chief Objects was to set Indiana’s favorite son right before the country upon the financial question. In other words, to demonstrate that his financial views are “sound.” This is an indication that Mr. Hendricks’ congressional supporters realise his weakest point, and will direct their attention to over- coming it. The position Indiana occupies as ‘the only democratic state in the north will en- ‘title Her to very respectful consideration at Cin- cinnati. It is urged in behalf of Hendricks first, that Indiana ts essential to democratic Success in the presidential election, and, second, that he can certainly carry the state. The reply to this invariably 1s, that while it {s conceded he could carry Indiana he might lose New York, another @ssential state, because of the doubt entertained in the east of the soundness of his Mnancial views. It is apparent now that the Hendricks men intend to devote their efforts to @ removal of this objection to their candidate. ‘They feel that they can safely count upon the adherence of the democrats of Indiana, regard- Jess of the financial question. Soft-money men like Voorhees and hard-money men like McDon- ald join earnestly in working up the Hendricks boom, and they can hola their respective followers at home without any difficulty. There- fore the plan of campaign is to manufacture and cultivate Hendricks sentiment in the east. It is claimed for Mr. Hendricks that he has never ‘uttered a word that can be construed tato sym- pathy with the financial herestes that prevailed in the west. On the contrary, it is urged, every utterance of his has been in favor of sound money principles. In 1876 Tammany and all the anti-Tilden democracy of New York joined 4n support of Hendricks, and made him their candidate at St. Louls. They are ready now to take him up again should any prospect of beat- ing Tilden with him appear. If Hendricks’ friends can convince the democrats of the east that he isa safe and sound man financially, he may, backed by the unwavering support of his own state, become a formidable candidate for the nomination. ——~+-____—. It seems that Mr. Edison has been very much annoyed at the unfavorable criticisms upon his electric light, and in order to give to the public something definite with regard to the merits of Ais invention he recently invited a scientific in_ vestigation. He wrote to Professor Barker, of the University of Pennsylvania and president of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, who selected as his coadjutors in the investigation of the £dison light Professor Ro- land, of the Johns Hopkins University, of Balti- more, and Professors Brackett and Young, of Princeton College. It was stipulated in ad- vance that the conclusions of these scientific gentlemen should be published, whether favor- able or not to the Edison light. The investiga- tion has just been completed, after two weeks diligent labor, but the results are not yet given out. All the tests known to science have been applied, and there will be two reports submit- ted. Professors Brackett and Young will con- Mine their report to the efficiency of the im- proved dynamo machines and generators, while Professors Barker and Roland will report upon the economy of the light. It 1s said that the tests of the dynamo machines developed for them a greater power than Edison claimaa, but this is not given as part of the forthcoming re- port. Inasmuch as Edison announces prepara- tons to extend and enlarge his works anda purpose to have 600 lights burning at one time, very soon, it might be inferred that the forth- Coming reports are not unfavorable to him. The publication of these reports will be watched for with interest, as the recegnized ability and character of the scientific gentlemen who made the investigation will give great weight to their verdict upon the merits or demerits of the E.l- £0n light. There is sufficient doubt about the result of the pending Parliamentary election in the Eng_ lsh kingdom to invest 1t with supreme im_ portance. Everything else is forgotten for the Ume being, and England, Ireland and Scotland are convulsed by the same political agitation. ‘The liberals represent that their position with the country has materially improved during the last few days, and that their prospects are con- tinually brightening. They refuse to be put upon the defensive, but, on the contrary, are Making a most aggressive fight. Mr. Gladstone ‘urges all elements of opposition to the govern- ment to unite in this campaign, and he Is exert- ing himself to bring about a union of this kind. Meantime money for electioneering purposes is being used freely and political excitement is in- creasing. Gladstone’s son has been nominated 4n a hopeless race for Middlesex, and the first act of his friends and his father’s admirers was to subscribe $50,000 to pay the expenses of the contest. ‘The conservatives have the advantage in the contest of representing the national pride in the matter of matntaintng the prestige of England in the affairs of Europe; while Gladstone and the liberals are handicapped by the policy of peace and non-interference so distasteful to the Fepresentative Briton. The prospect is that the liberals will make some gains at the elec tions, but will not succeed in wholly wiping out the conservative majority. —_-_-. ‘The strike of railroad employés at East St. Louis threatens to seriously Interfere with the transportation of freight through that point. ‘The twelve or fifteen railroads running to and through St. Louis from the north and east all occupy a common yard, in East St. Louis, where the tracks come together, near the approach to the great bridge. The employés hold this yard and refuse to permit the passage of trains through it until thelr demand for an increase of wages shall be complied with. A very unjust feature of the siege 1s that some of the roads are paying the rates demanded, but the strikers Yefuse to give them right of way through until all the others shall comply. This blockade is beginning to interfere with commerce at St. Louts and other western points by cutting off ‘the supplies of goods from the jobbing markets Just as retail merchants are buying. The effect dhas been toarouse the business men of St.Louis, and the strikers are in danger of having to Nght not only the railroad companies but all other business interests combined. o> —___ ‘The London Times ot Saturday in an editorial ‘upon the Panama canal, shows its teeth in op- position to the Monroe doctrine in a way that is construed by some as meaning that the Eag- Mish government is disposed to take a stand against that doctrine. The 7imes says there is no objection to the United States acquiring all the power it wants over the Panams canal by subscribing the money to build it, but that “the Monroe doctrine, even in its most restricted Suape, Was never admitted into the law of na- Mons.
