Liect. Provost's Love LEtrer.—A young man named William 8. Provost, of New Bruns- wick, N. J., enlisted early in the rebellion in the firsteregiment of New Jersey, poeny: He was shortly afterward promoted by ( Olden. to a Meutenancy in the Eleventh New Jersey regiment. He received a gunshot wound in the shoulder at Gettysburg. In crossing a small creek near the spot where he was wounded he took off his blouse to enable a comrade to staunch the flow of blood. He threw the blouse to a passin; , Soldier. The soldier was lost in the crowd and Provost never again saw the blouse. When his regiment was mustered out of service Provost returned to his home in New Bruns- wick. On Monday last he received a letter from a gentleman named Castner in Philadelphia. ‘The letter said that Mr. Castner had in a large envelope in his possession a pair of Heutenant’s shoulder straps, an officer's commission in the eleventh New Jersey regiment, signed by Gov. Olden, a letter from’ a lady addressed to ‘Lieut. Provost, and a photograph of a lady. Mr. Cast ner wished to know whether L.teut. Provost was alive. Mr. Provost, who is well known tn the neighborhood of Pennington,. N. J., where he now resides, went to Philadelphia ithmedlately and obtained the article described. Mr. Castner sald that his mother had died lately, and while examining her private papers he found the en- velope contalitog the eheuider straps, the let- ter, &c, The letter in the envelope had Mr. Provost's old New Brunswick address upon it. It was from his lady love, who has since become his wife. He carried it’ into the battle in the peas pocket of the blouse that he threw to the soldier. Advices from localities further northon Lake Champ! and also on Lake George, are that everywhere large quantities of ice have been gathered with the hope of selling it in the New York market. NEARLY A Fatal. ACCIDENT from the careless use of firearms happened in the restaurant of P. O'Connor, on Market, square, Norfoll poe yes- terday afternoon, Mr. Andrew J. Gil in, of Gosport, a young man about 24 years, of age, entered the saloon and called for a drink. After being served he drew out a pistol, and flourish- ing it around, made the remark: “Let us have some fireworks.” He then took the pistol in his right hand, cocked it and placed his thumb on the hammer. By some means the weapon ex- ploded, and the whole charge of one of the Chambers penetrated his brain, entering just at the outer angle of the right eye, and causing death in five minutes.
