The inquest was held in the ae artments of Mr. Buchly’s (the un- dertaker) building, on the south side of Pennsyl- ‘vunia avenue, between 9th and 10th streets, THE FIRST WITNESS called wa3 James Muer, the hostier for Mr. Hol- laday, who testified as’ to the finding of the podies of Reilly and his wife-on Monday morn- the circumstances of which were published (HE STAR Of Monday last. He gave a de- led statement of the duties of each of the ployés about the stable, and said Reilly was about the aoe Sunday, as usual; after dinner Sunday he was playing in the stable with his little dog. The jast' time withess saw him was about é o'clock. He thought he acted a little funny, as if he had been drinking. ‘Witness did not see Reilly’s wife at all on Sunday. He did not chink Reilly was drunk, but thought he had been drinking. It was not very usual for Mrs. R. to visit her husband at the stable. She had been there but four times in as many weeks. He was present at the stable some time ago when Reilly had a fuss with & man named Strong. ‘This amounted to a scullle, Strong getting the worst of it. Did not hear any words used by Strong other than “I'll get even.” Strong was then washing the blood off his hands. Heard Retlly say some- thing afterwards about Strong’s character inks Strong sald on Saturday last as to Rell 21 get even with him yet.” Don't know that in before Rellly. was very sorry to hear of the death. Had never seen Brome J in the stable since witness had been employed there. Keilly went to his room about 6 o'clock Sunday evening and he was there when witness left about o'clock. He called Mr. Rellly to close the door petore leay- ing. Mrs. Reilly was not there at the time. A man came there to get his hair ent on Sunday and he told him that he would do It in the morning. Den’t know that there was any par- ucular ee between Strong and “Miss Mary,” who was employed in the house, bat had heard that he was waiting on her. Strong said he had heard it, but could not tell from whom. On Mon evening he saw Muir, who dented that he saw Strong on that day, but admitted he saw him when he (witness) spoke of Lieut. Greer having been there about the same time. Muir said then that Enwin, coachman for Sen: tor Pendleton, told him that Jteilly and Mrs. Reilly had passed through the alley way late at night intovieated. Witness went to Enwin, who said that he had not said so, for he had'been absent from 6 to 103¢ o'clock, but had seen Reilly ‘o into the stable near 6 o'clock, walking very fast. Witness then went to Mrs. Baker’s, who said that Reilly and Mrs. Relliy leit the house at 5} o’clock.- From his knowledge of the par- ties, they were frugal and industrious, Mrs. Reilly especially being a strict and consctenti- ous christian. Last year they were in straight- encd circumstances, ana then there might have been some reason for suicide, but latterly they have been doing well, and hé could see no cause whatever for their commission of the act. ‘The coroner here stated that Mrs. Holladay noticed that the lights in the stable were ing brightly at 12 o'clock, but at 2 were turned low. Miss Delia Shields testified that she is on a visit to Mrs., Baker at 1104 13th street, aud saw Mrs. Reilly and her husband there at Sj on Sunday night, and Mr. R. was not then under the influence of liquor. Witness heard the talk about arsenic, in which the difficulty of obtaining it from tie drug stores was alluded to, and Strong remarked that he had left arsenic in the stable. Strong insisted that Rellly should retract every word he had said against him. Strong sald that he had heard that Reilly had bought arsenic a few Pele casey and he explained that a smail pinch was enough for a horse.
