THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. THURBSDAY........... March 1S, 1880. CHKOSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. Zhe Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that of ail the other daily papers here added to-~ getn: ————— The Double Sheet on Saturda: Advertisers and newsdealers will confer a favor by sending in their orders as early as Possible for next Saturday's enlarged and extra edition. The number of new avveriisements printed in March thus far is 1,045, which is a decided increase over the corresponding period Jast year. ———~<~e-—___ The democrats im Congress will not carry their opposition to the federal election laws to the extent of refusing appropriations to enforce them. While there remain not a few in favor of this policy the counsels of moderation have prevailed with the majority, and the plan now is to amend the laws in such manner as will divide the election supervisors and marshals equally between the two political parties. No appropriations to carry out these laws will be made until after the amendatory legislation shall have been submitted. The republicans, irom the President down, have professed entire willingness to assent to any amendments cal- culated to add to the efficiency of the laws, and prevent them from being used for party pur- poses. Consequently 1t will not, probably, re- quire much time to dispose of the question when it shall arise in this shape, and then it will, no doubt, be settled for some time, at least. Be- sides an amendment requiring that both par- ties shall be equally represented in the appoint- ment of election officers, under these laws, another is contemplated limiting the number of appointments at each poll As the intention Of this is to prevent an unnecessary expendi- ture, the amendment will probably be accepta- ble to both parties. i Though the sentence of the San Francisco police court that Kearney be confined in the house of correction for six months and pay a fine of $1,000 may never be carried out it will effectually suppress the agitator and perhaps rid the communists of him. Kearney’s recent conduct has shown that there is nothing des- perate about him. He deserted his “principles” at the first appearance of danger, and his cow- ardice disgusted his followers, who have for- mally repudiated him. He had, by his ravings induced a large number of men to believe that another class of citizens was seeking to oppress. aad wrong them. His professions of devotion to the workingmen and willingness to “lay down his life” for them were evidently accepted us honest and hence his influence at the sand lots. He was bold enough when no courage was required, but at the first show of danger he: Showed the white feather and extolled the very men whom he had for months been condemning in most extravagant language as the enemtes of the workingmen. His cowardice opened the eyes of his dupesand they readily saw him in his true character. Even should he escape im- prisonment, by means of legal delays and tech- Bicalities, he will not invite another arraign- ment before the court that has dealt so severely with him. His name will not be likely to figure in the public prints much longer. Every dog hhas his day, and Kearney has evidently had his- - ‘There is another democratic Richmond in the presidential field. Ex-Governor Palmer, of Illinois, in a speech at Springfield, last night, proclaimed himself a candidate for the demo- cratic nomination. Whether Mr. Palmer gets any votes in the convention or not, he has by his announcement taken his name from that indefinite and rather obscure lst termed dark horses. The Ilnols democrats now have three men among whom to divide their attention in the selection of delegates to the National Con- vention—Palmer, Morrison and David Davis. ‘The first two named are ultra hard-money men, and though Senator Davis has been, on several Occasions in the past, mentioned by greenback- ersas a suitable candidate for their party, he hhas never given utterance to any sympathy with their financial views. Judge Davis’ political sentiments are most too uncertain to please the old guard of the Illinois democracy, and, therefore, the contest for the state delegation will probably be, really, between Palmer and Morrison, both of whom are opposed to Tilden, —————~<-e-—___ Mr. Jewett seems to be getting himself in running order for the presidential race. He withdrew the other day from a baaking house 4n Ohio, in which he had been a partner for the iast eleven-years,—thinking, doubtless, that the banking and ratiroad business together made too much weight for any horse to carry, with the public temper as it is at present. We are afraid he will have to unload the railway incu- ‘bus, also, before he will be able to make a suc- cessfulrun. The intelligent and independent Veters Of the country are not disposed just now to give the great monopolizing corporations that make every other interest their foot-ball any more power or prominerce than they possess at the present time. The tendency is, indeed, in the other direction. ————~e—_____ ‘There is in Dresden a Dressmakers’ Academy, where persons desiring to become experts in the various branches of the dressmaker's art hhave ar opportunity to do so at a mere nominal expense. During the past year 424 pupils, of both sexes, attended the course of instruction, being divided among the several branches as follows: 212 pupils in the cutting department dor men’s clothing and $0 for that of women’s apparel, 3¥ pupils in the cutting department for Cotton and linen goods, 102 in commercial book- keeping, &c. Of the above eight pupils enjoyed the privileges of the Muller-Gunkel scholarship, which entitled them to gratuitous instruction, board and lodging during the term. The tend- ency all over the civilized world now is in the direction of giving practical education in the useful oecupations. Of the thirteen members of the democratic State committee of Missouri seven are in favor of the nomination of Seymour for President, two for Hendricks, one for Tilden, one for Thur- man, One for Hancock and one for Morrison. ‘There is a strong anti-Tilden sentiment in the Committee, and it is very probable that the de- Jegation from that state to the Cincinnati con- ‘Yention will be instructed against Tilden. ————~-—____ ‘That motley col!-ction of humanity which ar- Fived in New York a few days ago under the presumptuous name of the “Salvation Army” dave served an indignant notice on the Mayor of that city that unless he allows them to preach, pray and sing at will in the streets, they ‘will wipe its mud from their feet and leave it to Perish in {ts iniquittes, This threat will proba- bly have the effect to stiffen the back bone of the Mayor, and lead him to enforce the ordi- mMaace more strictly than ever, as the easiest ‘way of getting rid of a nuisance. If it does, and the self-constituted “Army” concludes to leave, we suggest that it should go back to England. ‘It will find about as much brutal out-door sin to tackle in that country as any where under the sug. Why it left there is more than we can imagine, indeed, unless it was to get away from the enemy. <1 Even in Connecticut there has appeared a yoOwerful opposition to Tilden, within the demo- cratic party and it is not unlikely that the dele- gation from that state to the Cincianat! Con- Yention will vote for Bayard. Such influential democratic leaders as ex-governors English and Hubbard and Gen. Morris are working against ‘Tilden and in favor of Bayard. English is the ‘Choice of the party in the state upon the favor- Ate son principle, and the plan of the anti- ‘Biden men ts to give him a complimentary ‘Vote and then go for Bayard. ———--____ ‘The squeeze in Wall street caused by over Bpeculation has reached a point where a money panic is apprehended. Secretary Sherman will do what is in his power to relieve the soe with Sop Butters in ouch Grangug 0r8 e708 THE CAUSE REVEALED. How Various Ills of Human Life Are Explained, and Their Origin Understood. Discovery of a Subtle Acid in the Blood Which Causes Pain, Dis- ease, and Often Death. The Way by Which It Tt Gets Into the Sys- tem and How It Can Be Kept Out.- Some New Scientific Facts of Great Importance. © One of the moat important revelations of the present time is the discovery beyond a doubt that Uric Acid in the blood is the cause of all Rheumatic troubles. This acid causes a fermentation, which gives great pain to the muscles, stiffans the Joints, lasts the entire life. The natural ques- tion is: “How does this poisonous urie acid get into the blood?” ‘The answer is easy: Itis because the kidneys do not properly perform their functions and throw off this acid toroueh the natural chan- nels, thus permitting it to get scattered thiough the re aystem. This is logic; it is science. Itis going rizht to th source of the stream, as ali resd- ers can readily see. Tt would be as easy to dam the Nile with bulrushes as to attempt to annihilate con- finued rheumatic tronbles by lotions and rubbings; but by putting the kidneys in a healthy cndition the cause is removed, and the uric acid leaves the system instead of remaining in the bloo ‘The moet certain ruler and reculator_of the Kid- neys known to mankind is Warner's Safe Kidoey and Liver Cure.
