This is one of the suits for the possession of real estate in New Orleans, the greater part of which Mrs. Gaines has now gained nominal possession of, and in this case a Stipulation made between the parties Wy Mrs. Gaines agreed to leave De Liano possession on payment of $7,000. The paper also contained the provision that all incum- brances should be lifted by Mrs. Gaines, butshe afterwards claimed it should have been the other way, and that she was decetved into sign- ing the paper. Moses Spiro, a Second-hand dealer, testified that this man came into his store eno and offered agold watch for sale for #20. Witness after- wards bought. it for 312, and discovered that it was a fire-gilded silver watch. The court re- marked that a man engaged in the business of buy! log watenes is is supposed to be an expert, and if the watch old it would be so cheap that the deale: Chou! \d_ doubt whether the seller came by it honestly. A dispatch from Havana, March 6th, says:— Last Sunday a serious attenipt was made to dls- turb the public peace in Marianao, a village in the neighborhood of Havana, where a great many families pass the hot season of the year. It ap that it was intended to set tire to the theater, which isa large wooden structure,either by the Ineans of petroleum or small bombs filled with inflammable matter, wnich were found in the neighborhood of the build- ing, or by blowing it up by means of dynamite, several’ packs of which were aiso iound. ‘The plot was luckily discovered be- fore its instigators could carry it into effect, and many prisoners were made, the case being under close investigation by the authorities. Atthesame time the above discoveries were made a party of mounted and armed men were seen on the road leading from the village into the tnterior, and later on the dead of a milkman was found In the road, who was prob- ably assassinated with the object of taking away his horse. Not far from the spot were found several arms 1n a poor condition, stumps with bayonets attached to them, packages with cartridges, tnirty or forty’ cochados, such as are used by the insurgents, a chest with medicines, various packages contain- ing dynamite’ and a lot of pam iets es last year in New York, bearing the fol- ovine title: “Biberating Army of Caba; a briet instruction for guerilla warfare and a guide for the chiefs and officers in campaign.” ‘These objects are suflictent proof that it was tn- tended to raise a disturbance with a political aim, and it is said that the authorities had know: ledge beforehand of a preconcerted plan to disturb the peace In4his province.
