THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON 2 CROSBY S. NOYES.... Editor. ——— ——————— ine Star has a regular. perma- daily Cirentation ‘more exblihe in irathinaton and and it eauat fot nt fot Ret — ‘The Doublie-Sheet To-morrow. THE Stak of last Saturday contained over seven columns of new advertisements, equal in space to more than an entire page of the paper. The number of new advertisements in March thus far reaches 720. Advertisers and news- dealers will, therefore, confer a favor by sending in their orders as early a5 possible. The edition of last Saturday was the largest ever printed and sold. o-—__—__ Pennsylvania 1s, for the present, th battle ground between the Tilden and anti-Tilden democratic factions. The democratic commit- tee of that state will meet in Pittsburgh on the 18th Instant to call a state convention, and the “great object of each of the opposing wings of the party ts to control its action. The Tilden democrats, under the leadership of Speaker Randall, want a late convention—sometime in May. Senator Wallace is managing the antl- Tilden campaign in the state, and his side insist upon - an early convention. The chairman of the committee is a staunch Tilden man and will do zealous work in his behalf, but the general im- Pression {s that a majority of the committe is against Tilden. Many of the counties have already chosen delegates to the state convea- tion, and the hardest fight will be over thead- mission of the Philadelphia delegation. The anti-Tilden forces swept the field there, but ex- Mayor Vaux org&nized a contesting delegation. ‘The chairman of the state committee makes up the list of delegates to the convention, and the supposition is that he will put on tt the Tilden delegates from Philadelphia. This will put the anti-Tiiden delegation in the position of contestants, and then the fight will be before the committee on credentials; Sena- tor Wallace has, in all former contests of this kind, proved too much for his opponents, and backed by the powerful anti-Tilden sentiment in his state, his friends claim that he will over- throw the Gram itatesmen completely. All the leading democrats of Pennsylvania, and many of them from other states, will be present at the meeting ot the committee In Pittsburg. ‘Tilden’s supporters believe that ff he can get the Pennsylvania delegation he will secure the nomination, and his opponents belleve that if they can beat him in that state they will drive him from the race. Therefore, both sides are putting forth every effort, and the fight will be a bitter one. SS ‘The first actual split in the republican party over the third-term movement has occurred in Missouri. In other states the contest has wagea fiercely, but not with force enough to disrupt party lines. The anti-third term republicans in Missouri are led by ex-Senator Henderson, who is bitterly hostile to Gen. Grant, because the latter removed him very summarily from his Position as prosecutor of the St. Louis whisky ring. Shields, chatrman of the Missouri republi- can committee, is the law partner of Henderson, and shares the latter's resentment, because of his removal by Grant. Ex-Postmaster Filley, a member of the state committee, and the most astute republican politician in Missourt, com- mands the Grant forces. At the meeting of the committee last night, in St. Louis, the third-term issue was squarely presented, and as the chairman, Shields, refused to work for the cause, a motion to depose him and reorganize was carried. Filley was elected chairman, whereupon Shields, and seven others who agreed with him in his opposition to Grant, withdrew. Filley retained a majority of the committee, there being twelve Grant mem- bers, including himself. Each committee claims to be the legitimate party organ, and each has issued a call for a state convention at different Umes and places. The feeling between the two factions of the party is intense, and each will send a delegation to the Chicago convention. As Missouri is reliably demo- cratic, this breach in the republican party 8 of no importance as far as electoral votes are concerned. The state will have thirty votes in the convention, and that is the bone of conten- ton. /The Blaine and Sherman forces have com- bined, and are represented by the Shteld’s com- miitee. With two-thirds of the old committee to support him, and his thorough familiarity With alt the political machinery in every county Of the state, the chances are that Filley will win the fight and carry the thirty votes of the state for Grant ee Since the opening of the discussion upon the Fitz John Porter bill both parties in the Senate have been maneuvering, the republicans to make party capital out of it, and the dei toprevent them from doing so. By a very quiet proceeding yesterday the democrats gained their desired end, and, for once. outwitted their oppo- nents. Several days ago leading democratic Senators came to the conclusion that a continu- ation of the discussion could only hurt their party and benenit that of their opponents. They heid a quiet conference—not a caucus—and de- termined to send the bili to the calendar, there toremain until next session. They expected the republicans to antagonize such a proceeding, as they were desirous that the discussion should Preceed to the exclusion of all other business: According to agreement, Senator Jones, of Florida, was permitted to make his speech on the bill, a legal argument in support of it, and then, by a sharp parliamentary move the demo- €ratic object was attained. From the demo- cratic side a motion to lay aside temporarily was made. Senator Logan then moved to post- ponr indefinitely which was followed by the democrats with a motion to lay on the table. The latter motion had to be put first and the democrats carried it, thus putting the Dill where they can reach Itnext session. So com- pletely were the republicans in the dark as to the democratic plan that, after adjournment Senutor Logan proposed to bet a hat with Sena tor Randolph that he could not get up the bil again this session. The Jury in the case against Petroff, an, exe member of the Pennsylvania legisjature, Drought in a verdict of guilty, at Harrisburg, yesterday. ‘The indictment charged him with’ corruptly Soliciting nembers of the legislaturé to vote for &@ bill to pay the damages caused by the Pitts- burg riots. ‘The summary manner in which the law has dealt wiih Petroff and his associates 1s calculated to depress the trade of the lobbyist in Pennsylvania, if it does not destroy it. T Harrisburg lobby has generally had its own Way pretty much, and {ts workings have not contributed anything to the good name of the state. Recently amendments to the constitu- tion were Adopted having for one of their pur- poses the suppression of bribery and corruption a8 Means of attaining legislation. The frst application of the law, under these amend- ments, 1s now belug made in Harrisburg, and 4ts effect will be wholesome. ———_r0e -—___ The fate of one of the great railway combina- ‘ons lately organized is depending largely apon a decision of the United States Supreme Court ‘to be rendered next Monday. It isa suit of St. Louis vounty against the Missouri Pacific rail- Toad for $700,006 alleged to have been loaned the company. The corporation then existing was Superceded by the Garrison admintstratién, after litigation. Jay Gould purchased the Gar- rison interest, and upon that purchase formed the railway combination to include the M. K. & ‘T. and Texas Pacific. It appears that the St. Louis suit really involves the Garrison title to the road, and should the case be decided in favor of the county it will in effect restore the prop- erty to the original corporation and break up ould’s great combination. Such a decision would have a marked effect upon many of the Failway stocks, and would make and break, per- aps, 8 good many speculators, —————_+>+____ ‘The movement southern planters to supply the piace of colored laborers who have emigrated to the west, with Chinese, has taken ‘practical shape, and the Chinese compantes in San Francisco have been applied to to send coolies into the south. The Chinese havedemon- strated a capacity for mining and other kinds of hard manual labor in this country that would ‘ecem to Dt them for the cotton Helds. LUMBER!
