THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, THURSDAY March 11, 1880. CROSBY 8S. NOYES.... Editor. Zhe Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation more than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal to that Of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. ‘Tae Star has s direct wire from its news room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest news by its own operator from every quarter up to within a few moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re- ‘Ovives exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. The Do uble-Sheet on Saturday. THE Stak of last Saturday contained over seven columns of new advertisements, equal in ‘space to more'than an entire page of the paper. ‘The number of new advertisements in March thus far reaches 633. Advertisers and news- dealers will, therefore, confer a favor by sending in their orders as early as possible. The edition of last Saturday was the largest ever printed, and was all disposed of. ——~+e-—___. The division created in the democratic or con sServative party of Virginia by the state debt question now seriously threatens to enter into the coming national canvass. The readjuster wing of the party are full of resentment because of the abuse heaped upon them by the regular organs and speakers in the late state campaign, and they refuse to be concillated. At the meet- ing of the conservative state committee ia Rich- mond last night for the purpose of calling a state convention, the readjuster members took the position, substantially, that they had been read out of te party, and therefore they were mot bound to make any pledge of sup- port to the domocratic national ticket. ‘The discussion upon framing a call for a state convention indicated that the readjusters, as a party, will not return to their former political allegiance. The three members of the commit- tee representing the readjuster element not only opposed a call inviting all who desired the elec- tion of a democratic President to take part in the election of delegates, but they refused to commit themselves to it after the majority had agreed to it. One of the readjusters spoke of the “dead carcass of democracy” asin contrast with the “living force of a great party,” mean- ing, evidently, by the latter to designate the Teadjusters. The committee, by majority action, called a convention to be held in Richmond on the 19th of May, and it remains to be Seen whether the masses of the read- fusters will go back to their former party affiliations or follow their leaders in their oppo- sition to the regular democracy. The demo- cratic theory is that it is omly the readjuster leaders who desire to maintain an organization of their party upon national questions; that their only hope of remaining in office is to keep the party In the field as an active political force; but that the individual voters are not moved by any such selfish considerations, and will readily support the national democratic ticket. It must be admitted, however, that the course of the readjusters will depend largely upon Gen. Mahone. In every instance where party action has been required he has demonstrated his ability to control and direct it, and if he takes the lead in the support of an independent elec- Toral ticket the chances are that his party will follow him. ——_——_--____ ‘The ex-confederates in Congress are sorely puzzled asto what course they ought to take upon the Fitz John Porter bill. If they vote to pass it they will thereby furnish the republican party with the very campaign ammunition they are seeking to make out of the matter. A vote upon this bill with every ex-confederate re- corded in favor of it and every ex-Union soldier against it would beread upon every stump in the coming presidential canvass asa reason ‘Why the democrats should not succeed. The “confederate brigadiers” realize this, and are loth to make that record; but, at the same time, they are unwilling to vote against a measure simply because of political reasons. It has been suggested among them that they withhold their votes, and thus avoid going upon record entirely. This would undoubtedly defeat the bill, but those who advised it regard this as preferable to another political campaign with the “confederate brigadier” shoved to the front. Though this plan may not be adopted by all of them, the Indications are that some of the ex- confederates will make it convenient not to Vote upon the measure, unless, when the roll shall be called, the claim of Porter’s friends that some republican Senators will vote aye, shall be established. Several republican votes for the bill would deprive it of its political sig- nificance. The discipline of the republican party, however, has always been able to prevent ‘straggling upon measures designed for political use, and it will hardly fall in this case. ——_+--______ @ne of the Tammany organs wants Tilden to inform an anxious democracy whether or not ‘he would support John Kelly should the latter be nominated for President at Cincinnati. Possibly Kelly contemplates setting up his claims to the nomination as an offset to those of Tilden. Hehad himself nominated for gov- ernor tn order to defeat Tilden’s candidate last fall, in New York, and it would be almost as easy for him to organize a bolting convention in Cincinnati—the size of the convention would not cut any flgure—and to put him in the field for President. This would enable him to make the fight against Tilden in New York, the only state in which Kelly could exert any influence, It may be that the question put by the Tam- Many organ is only for the purpose of embar- Yassing Tilden, but Kellyis a man of bold po- litical methods, and should his Tammany delegation be refused admission to the Cincin- ‘Dati convention he will be apt to retaliate, —————_~-—____ ‘The haste with which Mr. Parnell returns to Ireland indicates that he intends to enter ac- tively Into the canvass for the election of mem- bers of Parliament. His own re-election ts as- Sured, so his friends announce, whether he be present or absent, but he wants to bring about the election of others who will co-operate with him in his plans for Ireland. His object 1s to obtain an endorsement of his policy by the “re- turn of a largely increased number of adherents to Parliament.” The action of the British gov- ernment, just prior to Parnell’s departure for the United States, indicated that it would not tolerate too much of the Parnell “agitation.” ‘When Parnell enters upon an election canvass ‘to secure an endorsement of his policy he makes ‘the issue as direct as possible; the government has already signified an intentior to make the Irish question prominent, and thus the two op- Posing forces will be brought into collision. ———~-____ ‘The “Pirates of Penzance” are likely to get into the courts, and if they do it will probably ‘be a question for some time as to who has the Jegal right to parade them in this country under the copyright law, as everything that gets into court is doubtful until it is settled, and sometimes afterwards. There can, how- ever, hardly be two opinions in the mind of the public as to Mr. John Stetson, of Boston, and the part be has taken inthe matter. That oint may be considered decided in advance. According to late advices from San Francisco, Kearney has been buying a repcating rifle to protect himself from an apprehended applica- tion to himself of the mob law he has been ad- Yocating so long for the benefit of others. From the way he has been talking for a year or two past one would suppose he had been a sort ‘of walking arsenal all the time. Is it possible ‘hat he has been giving us all this gasconade without being “heeled,” as they call it out ‘west? Why havn’t the San Franciscans given dim a breakfast of leeks long ago? ‘The Chicago papers state that the entire sew- erage of that city 18 poured into the Chicago ‘iver and then served up dally as a beverage to ‘the citizens through the water works.
