The jury returned a verdict for the defendant. ‘The Pension Office contributions to the Irish relief fund, through Dr. J. C. The colored brute, Robert Twyman,who made the Indecent assault on Miss Josephine Conk- Ung, near Arlington, was taken to the jailin Alexandria, Sunday evening, baving been ar- rested near the Long Brisige, by a Virginia con- stable. The constable who took him to jail made a lively trip of it, anticipating that the crowd would take his prisoner from him. Last night there was quite a crowd in Alex- andria around the jail and the police station, apxious to get the prisoner, and had he been found there is but littie doubt but.that he wont ave been swung up. Still, who has already served the usual limit of two years at that charge, be re- turned to them. THE BALTIMORE CON; EEENCE M. E. CHURCH continued its session at at ¢ wront Royal, Va., yes- terday. The examination of elders in Rocking- ham district was entered upon, and the chara‘- ters of all passed. The elders of Washington and Winchester districts;in part, also passed in character. The report on education was read in relation to Randolph Macon College, Ashland. Va., showing that the subscriptions secured by Dr. W. W. Bennett, president, has greatly re- duced the debt. An endowment was needed, and this, its semi-centennial, having been cha tered in 1830, was. a proper time to secure it. Regolutions were adopted comme: ane it to the patronage of the people, and calling for an en- dowrnent oe ae its semtcentenntal year. Rev. W. W. nnett, D., president, ad- dressed the conference in reiatian to the college and on the subject of education. The play, unlike “Colonel Sellers,” does not nine upon the one character for effect. Other char- acters besides “Ichabod Crane” have interest- ing i arts in the play—a somewhat peculiar one, but novelty of construction makes it it alt the better. Mr. Raymond in “fechabod Crane” has found a new tleld, but carries with him all the qualities that have won him his high repu- tation as a comedian. ‘“Wolfert’s Roost” will be repeated this evening. GOOD FOR THE JuDGE.—This morning, in the Police Court, an attempt was made to reopen the case of Betsy Johnson, who was convicted yesterday of an assault on her child by in- humanly whipping it with a cowhide. "The object of the motion to reopen the case was to have the fine of $10 reduced. The court said that a woman who inflicted 60 blows of a cow hide on a human being did not deserve consid- eration, and he would not revoke his judgment.
