_THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: ERIDAY.................. March 5, 1890. ac ASE a CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. — Zhe Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation mor than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equal tc that of all the other daily papers here added to- gether. . ——— ‘The Double Sheet To-morrow. Advertisers and newsdealers will confer a favor by sending in their orders as early as pos- sible for to-iorrow’s enlarged and extra edition. ‘The number of copies of Tae Stak printed and s0ld for the week ending Feb. 23, reached 245,984. The number of advertisements printed in February was 1,495. Increase over last year 124. Increase for January, 1236 Total increase for two months, 249. Total number of new advertisements thus far this year, 3,1173 being more for two months than all of the other Washington papers added to- gether print in six months, while they are read in THE Stak by three times as many people, ———-e _ Asses as Letter Writers. A good deal in the way of nonsense and false- hood ts sent out of this city in the form of cor- respondence from Washington, but we do not remember seeing lately anything more absurd and untrue than the following paragraph, which we find floating about among our ex- changes credited to that convenient But vague authority a “Washington Letter.” It says: “It 1s a good example of the timidity of be mn Merchants, that for months a copy of Judge Tourgee’s book, ‘A Fool's Errand,’ could not be bought here. The booksellers re- cognize the sympathy in this community for Pe ‘lost cause,’ and are careful not to offend ie inquiry among the book and news dealers Of the city satisfies us that more than one thousand copies of the book in question have been sold in Washington, and that it has not been on sale only when the demand was so great that the ordinary supply would not meet it. More than this, statistics would show, if they could be obtained accurately, that it hag been bought and read nearly if not quite as largely by people from the southern states as by those from the north. Indeed there ts no city in the country where as much freedom of opinion and expression is demanded and con- ceded as here. As any one with common sense can see, the very conditions of its existence naturally and necessarily make the national capital the most tolerant and cosmopolitan city wehave. _—_—____ ‘There are indications of a disposition in cer- tain democratic quarters to push the Chinese question to the front as an issue to be fought over in the presidential canvass. The Cincin- nati Za7uirer, which from its location and prom inence in its party will have a good deal of in- fluence with the national democratic conven- tion, predicts that “the Chinaman will appear in Chicago to vex the national republican con- vention.” The Enquirer then proceeds to com- pare the records of the democratic and republi- can parties upon this question, in order to show that the latter Is responsible for the defeat of the bill passed by Congress to restrict Chinese immigration. A dem- ocratic movement to make the Chinese an issue in the coming campaign would signify a purpose to make a special effort to carry the Pacific states. Those are the only states in which the issue could add strength to a party. ‘The only pronounced and prominent candidate for the democratic nomination who has made a record on the Chinese question that commends him to the people of the Pacific coast 1s Senator ‘Thurman. He has labored unceasingly in behalf of a law to restrict and limit the immigration of Chinese, and for this service the democrats of the Pacific coast have, upon different occasions, expressed a decided preference for him as a prest- dential candidate. The movement to make the ‘Chinaman figure in the coming political contest hhas been inaugurated in Ohio, and as Senator ‘Thurman is the candidate of his party in that State, the question arises, is it intended to add to his boom? _—— ‘The movement in behalf of Edmunds for the presidency does not yet take the boisterous pro- Portions of a “boom,” but has the sedate move- ment of a tranquil meadow stream that may increase in volume and force after awhile. Quite a numberof the scratcher papers have given him their fastidious endorsement, and the Springfield Republican throws over the Charles Francis Adams candidacy, hook and line, bob and sinker, to give place to whole columns of Eamunds talk. From its biographical notice it appears that George F. Edmunds was born Feb- Tuary 1, 1823, in the tarming and dairy town of Richmond, near Burlington, Vt. George was an active, thorough boy, who learned his lessons ‘with what seemed marvelous rapidity, and then recited the ideas in his own language. The fam- ily were well enough to do, so that he did little steady work on the farm, but attended the schools of the village, enjoyed some private in- struction, apd entered early upon his life work. He studied law, and soon made his mark at the Vermont bar at its strongest time. Mr. Ed- munds entered the United States Senate April 5, 1866, by appointment to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Senator Foot, and was elected by the legislature for the remainder of the term, ending March 4, 1569. He has been since twice re-elected, his present term expiring in 1881. Senator Edmunds, we are further told, egjoys @ good dinner, and takes his wine with it, but never to excess. Early married to a daughter of ‘Willis Lyman, of Burlington, he is scrupuously devoted toa model home. At present a daugh- ter presides over the house at Washington, while Mrs. Edmunds and the other children are at Rome. The Senator is reported to have amassed & comfortable little fortune in his profession, which the Springfield paper thinks isall right in the case of Senator Edmunds, but all wrong in ‘the case of Senator Blaine. ————~<-___ Ex-Lieutenant-Governor Dorshelmer, of New York, has,as the head of acommission appointed by a previous legislature, submitted to the present general assembly a report recommend- ing the creation of an international park at and around Niagara Falls) The report sets forth ‘the danger of the destruction of the grand and attractive scenery around the falls, if the round is permitted to remain subject to specu- Jation. There 1s danger that manufacturing and business interests may take possession of the surrounding ground, and that the tsland3 and declivities of the Niagara river may be Stripped of their natural woods, and their beauty destroyed to satisfy a money-getting spirit. The legislature is urged to join with ‘Canada, in purchasing the land and thus forever prevent any desecration of the grand scenery there. ——___-~ee- Kearneyism has been as disastrous to busi- ness interests in San Francisco as a commercial panic, and the laboring classes are among the Greatest sufferers. Men who have capital are afraid to invest it, and the result is that im- provements of all kinds have stopped and the mechanics thrown out of work. Not a few citi- zens of means have moved away, and some have ‘transferred their busin to other cities, There is, perhaps, not another government in existence where aman like Kearney would ba allowed full sway in his mischievous course. An exchange says that “Minister Anirew D. ‘White is suffering from the climate of Berlin, ‘and wants tocome home.” Well, why doesn’t jhe resign and come home? There are nearly a dozen steamers sailing from Europe to America every week. . Sd ‘The city councils of Philadelphia have decided 1¥ a vote of 40 to 26 that fares on the street rail- ‘ways in that city shall not be reduced to five Cents. We are afraid this i3 one of those cases ‘where most of the jury had some of the pork. <r To Connecticut belongs the distinction of hay- Ang erected an expensive public building at a ost within the original estimates.
