THE EVENTING STAT once ne nee THE EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. WASHINGTON. SATURDAY +.February 25, 1880. CROSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. Of all the other daily papers here added to- getner. a "The Virginia readjusters have been brought to @ sudden halt in their assault upon the state Credit, and they’are shorn of their power to do any further harm. Ross Hamilton, a colored re- Publican representative, has introduced a sub- Stitute for the Riddleberger “repudiation” sill, and it has been accepted by the debt-payera, who will give it their united support. This substitute provides for the payment of the debt at the full amount, with interest at 3 per cent., and the votes of debt payers and colored re- publicans combined will be sufficient to make it the law. This sudden change of position by fheir former allies has demoralized the Feadjusters, but it has had a most salutary ef- fect upon the prospects of the state. Hamilton” isdescribed as an intelligent and determined mab, capable of leading his race to higher and more worthy objects than that which prompted their combination with the readjusters. The influential white republicans of the state have ‘been laboring earnestly to induce the colored members of the legislature to break away from their allies and vote to sustain state credit, and the new departure of Hamilton was largely due to this influence. The men who had the good ame and credit of the state at heart, and who looked with horror upon repudiation, laid aside party feeling and party ties and worked to. gether earnestly to prevent financial ruin and Gegradation. Now that their efforts promise to ‘be eminently successful, republicans and demo- Crats are rejoicing together, while the readjust- ers are vainly declaiming against the “ingrati- tude of the colored race.” —___+<--_2_ A leading article In the last number of Nature criticises, from a scientific and historic stand point, the Edison electric light. According to this writer, Edison is thirtf-five years behind an English inventor named King, in the use of Prepared carbon in an exhausted globe. The Invention was entered upon the patent roll of ‘Great Britain in 1845. This writer speaks of a Similar lamp that was designed by Lodyguine in 1873, and he says that in the employment of ©arbonized paper Edison has been anticipated by several Nature does not belleve the ~‘fragile horseshoe paper cinder” will resist disintegration with as much power as the car- on used in exhausted tubes py dozens of ex- perimenters. The reports upon and descrip- ions of the Edison light, contained in the ‘American correspondence of the London Tims, ‘mre dissected and criticised, to show that the worrespondent was so carried away by enthust- asm, or something else, that he committed to paper a number of inconsistencies. It conclu- sion this foreign critic of the Edison invention says: “But apart from the mfld absurdities of newspaper correspondents, the more we study the detailed accounts of the new invention the more we regret that Mr, Edison does not devote some time to learn what has been already done in this field. An inventor who ignores what has een done ought not to be mortified to find him- Self occasionally forestalled by others in some discovery which he prides himself is his own,” — Leading republicans of Illinois to the number Of 700 or 800 met in conference at Chicago last ‘Wednesday, having been called together by the meeting of the state central committee. It was @ political love-feast, all present being called upon for encouraging talk. A canvass of the assemblage to ascertain the feeling with regard to a presidential candidate resulted in the fol- lowing vote: for Grant 416, for Blaine 139, for nominee 55. This vote 1s of considerable im- portance as indicating pretty surely that IlIt- nois will declare for Grant. The men who were present at that conference were the real leaders of the republican party in the state. The edi- tors of all the more prominent republican pa- pers, members of the legislature, county officers and members of local republican committees made up the meeting, and the general expres- sion was that “more than two-thirds of the peo- ple are for Grant.” The Blaine men present Spoke earnestly in behalf of their candidate, and intimated a fixed purpose to do their very best for him, but they were rather outnum- bered. Atter New York and Pennsylvania have instructed for General Grant it is hardly to be Supposed that the state of which he is a citizen Will do less to advance him politically. —_ +02 A second letter from Hon. E. B. Washburne, 0: Tilinois, on the subject of the presidency has been made public. In this letter he says: “I wrote a private letter to Senator Logan in refer- ence to other matters, and iucidentally stated therein that I was not a candidate for Pres! of the United States or governor of 1” I might have added that I Wer, for justice of the peace. health is a fiction of * heartier than s* Mr. Washb”, uent unois, and not a candidate ‘The allusion to my ill- che reporter, as I was never ~ Present.” While it is plain that ton arne does not wish to occupy a posi- sass at might, by any posslbility, interfere 3. + the nomination of his friend, Gen. Grant, “nis letter indicates that he 1s not willing to be thrown entirely out of the presidential line on the score of ill-health. —_ee-—_____ According to the New York correspondent of the Philadelphia Ledger, Senator Bayard’s friends in New York, do not concede that the « Fe-publication of his peace speech in 1861 has, as his opponents insist, “killed him off as an available democratic candidate” for the presi- dency. On the contrary, they are confident that, in due time, the Senator himself will be able to place that address in such alight in connection with the pecullar circumstances under which it was delivered, as wlil be likely to remove any doubts which may exist as to his loyalty to the Union. Some correspondence, looking in that direction, it is believed, has already taken place between him and some of hhis adherents, and the result will doubtless be made public in the course of a day or two. see The New York Graphic seems to think it Strange that the $200,000 appropriated by Con- gress in 1876 towards the construction of the ‘Washington monument should only be expected to raise it twelve feet. Asa matter of fact this appropriation was intended mainly to strength- en the foundation, which has been done, appar- ently, in the most thorough manner. It is to be hoped now thatithas been settled that the Monument is to be finished on the present plan nd in the present locality that the work will be pushed on rapidly, and the “unfinished mon- ument to Washington” cease to be the nation’s discredit.
