DE Lesskrs WORKING IN AMERICAN FasHion.—At the invitation of the American Soctety of Civil Engineers, M. de Lesseps spoke last evening at the Union League Theater, in New York, to a large audience on the Panama canal project. He laid stress on the main fact that a sea-level canal could be built more easily and ai less expense than a canal with loc! med and said that while he had taken a committee of able engineers with him to the Isthmus, at his own expense, and had left them free’ to decide as to the best mode of cutting a canal across the Isthmus, he would have abandoned the project altogether it he had found that the eminent men who accompanied him had decided in favor of a canal with locks. On the contrary, however, they had declared in favor of a ~ning ‘innins different trom those Pye forth respecting the present scheme. “If any project can be called American,” said M. de Lesseps, “this can. At times she went out to Service, mostly in the country, but was averse to leaving the city. Her last place of employ ment was here, but she was discharged for hold- ing a baby up by the hafr of {ts head. She gave as an excuse for so doing that she had seen other nurse-girls do the same thing (o stop babies from crying. After her discharge, her aunt told her she would have to go back to her father, who had married his second wife. She seemed to feel very badly over this announcement, and wrote a note to her aunt, declaring that when the latter received it she would be no more. This note accidentally fell Into the possession of the aunt, who thought it merely a child’s freak, $e. sent the eB home. This was too weeks or Saturday she bought five worth of arsenic, took it all, it is seen on Tuesday, though the doctors’ say she been taking it several days, and died at 11: last night. At the inquest there was no evi- dence showing that her step-mother or her father ill-treated her. HORRIBLE Fare OF A CHILD.—A man living near Prattsburg, Steuben county, N. ¥., went up the mountain there last Wednesday to cut trees for wood and slide them down a log-way to the valley below.
