— THE EVENING STAR. INGTON. ea oe -February 27, 1880. ‘CHOSBY 8. NOYES....Editor. ———————————————— Zhe Evening Star has a regular, perma- ment, bona fide daily circulation mor than double that of any other daily paper published in Washington, and equat to that of all the other daily papers here added to- getner. ‘Tae Stax has a direct wire from itsnews room to the Western Union Telegraph office in New York city, from which wires radiate to all parts of the globe, and is therefore enabled to secure the latest news by its own operator from every quarter up to within afew moments of going to press. It is the only evening paper south of Philadelphia which re- celves exclusively the Associated Press dispatches. The Double-Sheet To-morrow. Advertisers and newsdealers will please send in thelr orders for to-morrow’s enlarged and extra edition as early as possible. The editions Of THE STAR for the week ending February 21, reached 116,033 copies. The number of new advertisements thus far in February is 1,360. For the year 3,040. ————_—__+--___—_ As has already been announced, several of the western cities have abolished the study of music and the German language as a part of their common school education, and others are taking steps in the same direction. In fact, the indications are that the movement will become quite general, and there is every reason to be- Heve that the reform once started will not stop at those two accomplishments, bat will also Aincinde a number of the other higher or orna- mental branches now taught In the public Schools at very considerable expense and With little real advantage to elther the pupils themselves or to soclety at large. ‘The conviction 1s growing wider and stronger daily that the common school system of the country 1s being diverted from the purpose contemplated by its founders, and that, as mow administered, in many places at least, it is becoming a serious drawback instead of an auxiliary to national progress, as {t was intend- edtobe. The tendency ts to benefit the few, who do not need help, at the expense of the many, who do. In other words, an almost col- Jegiate education is frequently provided for those abundantly competent to provide tt for themselves, while an elementary education, such as will fit them to properly discharge the duties of citizenship, is withheld from those who are not able to obtain it otherwise than in the schools provided at the public expense express- ly to meet their needs. The demand ts there- fore very naturally and properly made that the teaching of fancy branches in common schools shall be stopped, and that the money heretofore spent upon them shall be appropriated to in- crease the now inadequate number of schools in all parts of the country until the means are pro- vided for every poor child in the land to secure at least the beginnings of an education. Even after this is accomplished, there can be no ex- use for fitting the children of well-to-do peo- ple for college it other people’s expense. On the other hand, industrial pursuits adapted to both Sexes should be introduced and taught in every public school, so that the off-spring of the poor and ignorant may acquire the means of sup- porting themselves and others dependent upon them, instead of growing up paupers and crim- inals, and thus becoming not only a tax but a scourge upon community. —___—+20e--—____ Graphic writers are generally popular with readers who like highly seasoned food, but they are apt to be shaky in their facts. Indeed, their flowery sentences and highly wrought descrip- tions are commonly used to conceal a lack of substance, just as an artful cook resorts to ‘spices and artificial flavors to make up for the desirable qualities so conspicuously wanting in the original and principal materials constitut- ing his dish. A notable {illustration on this point is Mr. George Augustus Sala, the English newspaper correspondent now in this country, who probably stands at the head of his class. He recently sent to his home paper a highly in- teresting and graphic letter from and about Au- gusta, Georgia, in which he largely drew upon his guide book for information, as traveling cor- respondents in foreign parts are usually obliged todo. With that geographical ignorance which characterizes all Englishmen, however, he fell upon the chapter relating to Augusta, Maine, instead of that describing the Georgian city, and in his most pleturesque manner he applied the industries, statistics and peculiarities of the former city to the latter. It made what Horace Greeley called “mighty interesting reading,” ‘but in the way of disseminating useful knowl- edge among men it didn’t amount to much. —____<+e-____. The following provision of the Burlingame treaty is being quoted as a warning to the hoodlums of San Francisco, that if they resort to violence against the Chinese it will be the duty of the government to interfere and protect the latter: “Chinese subjects, visiting or residing in the United States, shall enjoy the same privileces, immunities and exemptions, in Tespect to travel or residence, as may there be enjoyed by the citizens or subjects of the most favored nation.” This provision of the treaty, however, does not impose upon the United States the duty of protecting the Chinese residents of San Francisco tn the maintenance of a nuisance, such as “Chinatown” has been declared by the board of health. Under the treaty Chinese are only entitled to protection so long as they keep within the law. A lady in Philadelphia died recently from Wearing colored stockings. A protruding copper nail in her shoe punctured her heel, and the poison in the coloring of the stocking entered the wound. It is hardly within the bounds of Possibility to prevail upon the ladies to cast off colored stockings while they are in fashion. The Old adage, “It is better to be out of the world than out of the fashion,” has, perhaps, too strong a hold upon the female mind for this. But the death of the Philadelphia woman will At least admonish the ladies to look out for pro- truding copper nails in their shoes. —___+e-_____ Mr. Bayard now understands the meaning of the poet's words **So near, and yet so far!” ——-re -—__ TEE WEEKLY Stak, now ready, contains all the News of the Week. home and foreign; the Hirth murder trial: Congressional Proceedings; Political A ; White House and Department News; Loci Items; Proceedings of the Courts: Chole Stories: Poems and Sketches; Agricul- tural and Household Matters, Terms: $2 per annum. in advance, postage pre- Paid; single copies 5 cents, tn wrappers.
